I was checking some blogs, and I noticed a very interesting image showing that there are similarities between a propaganda mural and Star Control:

I thought it was quite funny; a very interesting way for Star Control to get mentioned.  There's some info at:

Yup. The second article pretty much proves it -- the two-pronged fingernails are a dead giveaway.

In times like this I really want copyright laws to be more severe...

Now seriously, I wonder what was in the mind of whoever drew that mural. Drawing inspiration from an obscure American video game... I guess he just saw it somewhere and the image got stuck in his memory. This stinks of ground-level creativity. Ever tried composing music, getting instead a melody you had heard a few days before? Then you'll know what I mean.

Whose hand is that supposed to be, anyway? o_O

Look at the label in the diagram. It's the hand of Accolade! ;D

If I had to guess (since i don't know), I would say that it isn't supposed to be anyone's hand in particular. In fact, I might suggest it was an Accolade creation rather than a TFB one. Accolade probably thought "hmmm Star Control - we need some cover art to reflect that".  Or it could have been something arranged/sanctioned by TFB - either way, that ain't the tenticle of an ur-quan, or an appendage of any race that I can think of.

See, that's what happens when  you press for an answer to a question - you get responses like the above.

I'm sure Boris Vallejo had a good laugh over this one. I really wish I had ordered the original print when I had the chance. I still have the coupon though...  ::)

I second that notion.  They did that same thing with the Star Control II cover:
There's an unknown alien in the background and I've never seen that large ship in the game anywhere.
