SC2 really doesn't need a remake. UQM runs on every modern platform and is free, and the graphics hold up just fine. Many 2D games for both PC and console from the early 90s still look nice today (I don't think anybody would call Sonic or Super Metroid ugly games, for example), and SC2 is no exception.  It has good cohesive art direction, enough colors to detail things properly, and a clean, well-designed look to it. The conversation portraits are especially nice.  Actually, SC2's graphics (and many other 2D games from its time) have aged much better than a lot of early 3D games. A remake would be superfluous and would likely end up being worse.

I noted the writer says "the galaxy" numerous times. As we all should know, the given map is only a section of the galaxy, possibly a very minute section as well.

And to be exact, Star Control 2 *has* been brought back to the modern world. But I agree on one thing; I too would like to see Wing Commander, X-wing and TIE Fighter be remastered.

What (http://www.mobygames.com/game/wing-commander-the-kilrathi-saga), again (http://www.mobygames.com/game/star-wars-x-wing-collector-series)?

Isn't this the reason why the UQM project exists in the first place?

As already mentioned, what we need is a NEW Star Control title, one that can live up to SC2-if that's even possible, given how this game is the closest to perfection yet IMHO. (Look at what happened to Star Control 3!)

Failing that, I'll create my own Star Control/Starflight-inspired space adventure and exploration game, though it'll certainly be very different(while the core gameplay still revolves around exploring space, collecting needed minerals from planets, and conversing/trading/fighting other sentient species, it would be played a bit more like a Battlecruiser/Universal Combat title sans the bugs and confusing interface; I'll also have to create my own original universe and sentient races).

(Now, if I could just figure out how to compile the WinCE port under Cygwin so that I could play it on the go and expose other people to this gem in the rough...)

I totally agree with the article. I love SC2, you know I do, but there are a few things that make it not quite on par with modern games that may warrant a remake:
  • Odd initial start. I mean, you're dropped on a sub menu in the corner of the screen with no clue as to what buttons to push to navigate that menu. It should be easier to get started. Even a message or intro movie that says "head towards earth" would be beneficial
  • Lo-Res graphics. Mind you I don't EVER want to see them darkened or make "more realistic." The bright colors are perfect. But people will not tolerate low quality graphics nowadays.
  • The galaxy map needs an overhaul. How often did you miss Pluto because it looked like a star? Making the game high res will fix a lot of that, but I'd like to see more pretty effects on this screen. A bit like hyper/quasi space, things that add depth to the image. But don't go overboard with this.
And once that's all done take that prettied up engine and MAKE A SEQUEL!

Um i'm probably gonna be shot for this but i would have thought that FF7 would have been the most wanted remaster especially seeing the stink after Square (or whatever they call themselves today) released that Tech demo that was a remastered intro movie.

And while i agree SC2 looks pretty good even now i could still be better and remastering it would be a stroke of genius (HINT HINT to any gaming companies who may happen to see this {i know they won't see it}). While UQM is awesome no doubt i dont think it can be classed as a remaster more a .... emulation? It's basically SC2 with better sound and the ability to run on windows + a lot of stuff i probably am missing sorry guys.

I think the word you're looking for is "port (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porting)", and UQM is, apart from new features like improved graphics scalers and sound mixing, remixes and netplay, a port of 3DO SC2 with some features from the PC version added back in.

ya port is exactly the word i would have used if I had any brains. But yeah a remaster of SC2 would be incredibly awesome. Almost as awesome as walking outside tripping over a huge hunk of gold and concussing yourself on a low branch from your money tree. Which is pretty awesome

Anyone tell TFB about this? They could present this to the guys on top, Gamespot is very influential.

I'm 99.9 % certain that one of the 30 people at TFB would have come across this informaton and passed it on if they thought it any help.

Hmmm...I've just realised something. It seems most, or many of my contributions to this forum seem to be negative - like why you can't rather than why you can, or disputing points. I've decided that this isn't very contructive. I'm going to be more useful and positive in the future. Maybe I'll even make a thread!!

I would love to see a Star Control mixed in with a little Wasteland-type-of-deal on the planet side (2 remasters in 1!  ;D)
