Title: Ever DREAMED about a sequel to UQM?
Post by: OldShofixti on January 13, 2003, 09:25:47 pm
Call me crazy, but I did! In my dream last night, I was playing a sequel to UQM where the alliance races didn't like the captain and the Sol system was patrolled by a bunch of different ships just to make sure that the captain didn't get to Earth. If the captain went there, the Utwig pretty much repeated what the Ur-Quan drone warned about in UQM, but attacked as well.

While I was playing this sequel and enjoying my dream, I was hanging out with the TFB gods!

I wish I never woke up! :)

I dreamed that the Melnorme were taking over Earth, and I had to take it back, or something of the sort.  Then I broke the game by killing said Melnorme before they got a chance to talk to me.  I got to land on some random planets and walk around.  It was fun.

on sunday night, in a fever-induced dream (wondering why I abruptly stopped posting? now you know)
I thought I was playing UQM, but there were a few subtle differences. I accidentally headed out of the system without starting the plot. I met the pkunk, they gave me the four ships, but I had a careless collision and began zooming around the hyperspace map like it was one of those asteroid overlaps. I managed to halt my momentum by hitting a star system. I thought it was an Arilou system, even though there were a lot of Yehat around. pretty quick I realized I should get out before they twin-cannoned my unupgraded ass to death. My slowpoke ship JUST managed to escape the system and slowly get back home, and I woke up.

Now, throughout this all, I could see ships maneuvering in hyperspace in a black background in quasi-3d. There were weird distortions around Vulpeculae; I could see little flickers like lightning bugs throughout the center of the map, probably the doctrinal war. It was a pretty intense holistic effect.

Also, when you bought thrusters for the ship, you had to pick from two types: warp or combat. Warp thrusters sped you up more in hyperspace, and combat thrusters more in combat. But in combat, warping out was aided by more warp thrusters. Furthermore, all of the maneuvering slots were fillable by either turning jets OR thrust. So, there was no maxed-out setup, but rather a freedom and a balance.

But I had screwed it all up and somehow mad it so that if I were in combat I wouldn't be able to maneuver at ALL... so I had to really avoid any fights (which was why I was really glad to get those 4 Pkunk)

Oye, dreaming about video games. Means you've had a little too much, doesn't it? (too much? of gaming? surely you jest!)

Logically, I figured the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and Kohr-Ah would eventually regroup and seek out to 'punish' the wicked races for their desecration of the sacred trophy. I don't really give much stock in the SC3 nonsense about their 'coming to their senses and re-unifying under the Path of Ceaseless Vigilance and joining you' after SC2. Dozens of thousands of years of mindless, insane (what else would you suppose happens to an individual forced to use an Excruciator for their entire lifespan), agony-filled obsession with a way of life isn't going to suddenly drop overnight like a Thraddash Culture. I imagine despite managing overturn the Ur-Quan advance (as the Captain narrates during the ending) they would remain subdued for long.

I'm not quite sure how the Mark II ship that the Slyandro referred to would be located, but as the Captain says he didn't return to Earth (not to say they didn't return to the station in orbit around it, just not the surface of Earth itself) for the next five years, I imagine they were running around in a flurry, trying to deal with the Ur-Quan's collective fury and retribution.

And a good thing it is. I dream of driving that lander around earth at some stage. That would be mucho fun and very devastating methinks.
