First of all, let me just start by saying I love all the hard work you people have put into UQM. You brought back to life one of my all-time favourite games and for that I'm truly thankful ;D

I've been a massive StarControl fan since i was a wee boy in the early 90's living in Finland. To this day, I still love SC2 dearly. I've been a happy UQM user for 4 years now and the latest release is absolute top-notch brilliance.

Little about me, I enjoy making movies, digital art, graphic design, hockey, and of course video gaming. I'm currently attending college in Canada.

So that's the scoop on me so far. Looking to become a contributing member of the SC2 community here, so thanks for having me. I'm also looking for people to hit up for melee every now and then.

Hello, nice to see more people here. We don't really do introduction posts at this forum but I'm sure this isn't the first. What's with Star Control and the enormous number of fans it has that hail from Finland?

I don't really have an answer for you there, I only remember a handful of friends from Finland that knew SC2 :)

In the 90's, lots of independent Finns were busy creating DOS games (along with Future Crew/Futuremark), so I guess it's no surprise they'd be familiar with the best game ever made.

I've managed to get a couple college buddies hooked on UQM. One round of SuperMelee and they fall in love with it.

I'm not sure about finland specifically, but I find that many open source
games (and other applcations) seem to get better recognition
in Europe than in North America. Linux distros, seem to generally gain
more popularity there. Two of the four open source projects I've
done recently have enjoyed good ratings there (and in Brazil) but
not so much in the USA or Canada.

Maybe the Fins are just more advanced.

Nah, it's just that it's cold and dark half the year here and the beer is quite expensive, so you end up spending much of your spare time in front of a computer.

Also, we are stereotypically extremely shy (except when drunk) and incredibly cheap. So that we sit inside all alone and play things you don't have to pay for seems logical.

That's interesting, just because I'd always thought Fins were sterotyically out-going and to the point. That being said, I don't think I've met anyone from Finland. Maybe I should change that. Who wants to visit Canada? We also
have cold, dark and beer.

Man you've got your stereotypes way mixed up. Finns are surly quiet oafs who drink a lot and get into the knife fights outside the sauna. Swedes are all outgoing metrosexual weak  sissies who cant handle drink or fighting. At least those are the stereotypes around here.

Those are also the Finn and Swede stereotypes here in Denmark, with the one exception that our stereotype of Swedes also includes very heavy drinking. Perhaps because Swedes go here to get drunk, due to the insane prices of alcohol in Sweden.

....of course, it says a lot about Denmark that the only reason Swedes want to come here is to get drunk.

(I think the stereotype of Danes I've heard around the rest of Scandinavia is usually that we're fat, drink too much, have a national football obsession, are not particularly bright, and that our language borders on being completely impossible to make sense of.)

I'd like to emphasise that written Danish is easily decipherable to anyone who reads Swedish with only a little practice (the grammar and vocabulary are very similar), but the spoken language is tricky to understand.

Yeah, unfortunately Denmark only sees Swedes who consider it a worthy venture to go somewhere to get drunk cheap. Swedes and Danes used to war all the time. Not too far from me are a few defensive forts which were built for such occasions. Nowdays I think it's mostly the Danes who are annoyed by the drunk Swedes.

As a Swede I can read Danish and Norwegian, but it's harder to understand it when spoken. Apparently they have less problem understanding spoken Swedish.
