Title: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 02, 2008, 10:25:45 pm Now announcing the next Star Control 2 net melee tournament for the month of April! All players will be using 200 point fleets this time, a departure from the horrendous handicap tournament we had in March. Speak up if you plan on attending.
-----[Date] Saturday, April 19th, 2008. -----[Time] * 5 AM Sydney * 7 AM Otaki * 12 PM Los Angeles * 1 PM Denver * 2 PM Chicago * 3 PM New York * 7 PM London * 8 PM Paris * 9 PM Helsinki -----[Place] #UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net. -----[Tournament Structure] We are using Swiss tournament rules. Losing in the first round does not eject you from the tournament. You will instead play against other defeated players in subsequent rounds. There will be three rounds, then possibly a final bout between the two top participants if a clear winner has not emerged. -----[Tournament Rules] 1) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players. 2) Only one of each ship type is allowed in a fleet. 3) You must have your team set up before connecting to another player for melee. Do not adjust your fleet once you've connected to an opponent. 4) No Thraddash Torch. 5) Foul play will result in you being ejected from the tournament. This hasn't ever happened before, and hopefully it never will. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Amiga_Nut on April 03, 2008, 02:20:06 am Well that does it. You didn't take the advice to merely adjust the handicap point structure. While continuing to ban one of the more interesting ships from your tournaments. I played last time because it was different. Boo I say!
I will not be attending. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 03, 2008, 02:36:52 am I will not be attending. Elvish Pillager said he wouldn't play if I left the ship in. It was either you or him, and I'd personally prefer not to bother with that wretched thing. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Lurker on April 05, 2008, 07:07:24 pm We'll see if I'll remember to join this time.
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Elerium on April 05, 2008, 10:09:41 pm Thraddash takes waaaay too long to finish a fight with it. The guy just sits taking pot shots at you or constantly runs away using the Afterburner.

Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Cedric6014 on April 06, 2008, 10:26:08 pm It would be swell if I could fix mine too
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Resh Aleph on April 07, 2008, 12:26:52 am Yeah, same here. :( You would all be dead meat if it weren't for the damned packet loss!
And by "you all" I mean "I". Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Eru Ilúvatar on April 07, 2008, 11:49:29 am Howdy guys, I've read the tournament thread over at the SCDB, and I decided to participate too. Hopefully I'll end up somewhere more decent than the last place. :P
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Gekko on April 09, 2008, 12:06:43 pm I might not be available then, but I'll do my best and try.
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Waylander on April 09, 2008, 02:06:51 pm Firstly I'm in if i can manage to stay awake till 3 in the morning that day.
Secondly the Torch may be annoying but the Spathi ship or druuge ships no more so. I mean okay the eluder isnt as fast but its the exact same strategy and the Druuge once it gets going is almost impossible to keep up with and or shoot at. all the player has to do is point at the enemy and shoot (does the druuge ship or the torch move faster with their abilities?) Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Dancing Fungus on April 09, 2008, 06:44:08 pm I don't know if I can make it, but I'll try.

Western Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan? I picked a time that was good for Europe and North America, but obviously that whole slice of the world draws the short stick. I'm really sorry about that, but there's not a lot that can be done. If 10+ Aussie players were to show up spontaneously, I'd tell them to host their own tournament. I think you mean "no less so" in that first sentence, and going by that I'm gonna have to call you on it. Spathi's range is rather short. The only thing that sucks about Spathi is that people try to play it like they do against the computer, forcing much longer matches than necessary. The truth is that Spathi needs to be played somewhat aggressively to get any mileage at all. Druuge can throw itself at a nice high speed with recoil, but after reaching a certain velocity the ship is simply flying out of control. A Druuge going at an insane velocity is very easy to catch and kill flying backwards on a wrap-around. I think it may be time for me to re-host that Fraps video I made with Koowluh showing how broken Thraddash can be. You guys can turn off your sound if you don't like Mario Twins. The music really helps drive the message home. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: chenjesummrnmhrm on April 10, 2008, 02:12:36 am What would really emphasize it is some fast-paced techno music, to contrast how slow the game is going.
I'm thinking something like http://djpretzel.web.aplus.net/songs/Final_Doom_Quick_Fix_OC_ReMix.mp3 or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1dAmziKpXE&feature=related or maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 10, 2008, 02:44:22 am chenjesummrnmhrm:

Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: fossil on April 10, 2008, 09:48:10 am Maybe we should just add a melee mode in which for every 30-60 seconds of either ship taking no damage 1 crew dies on both ships with a message 1 crew dies in boredom-related accident ? :D
That should encourage the smaller ship's pilot to act. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Waylander on April 10, 2008, 03:34:40 pm Where do you live? Western Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan? Yep W.A., hey its not a problem i just have to remember to stay up late thats all. besides i reckon its probably worth it.I think you mean "no less so" in that first sentence, and going by that I'm gonna have to call you on it. Yeah i will agree the thraddash does have more control of their velocity but i still reckon that other ships are equally good at dragging a battle out. Besides when i play torch it aint a long battle. What is this video you speak of? Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Elvish Pillager on April 10, 2008, 09:46:45 pm Maybe we should just add a melee mode in which for every 30-60 seconds of either ship taking no damage 1 crew dies on both ships with a message 1 crew dies in boredom-related accident ? :D That should encourage the smaller ship's pilot to act. Many options have been discussed. None really work. This one? ZFP+Spathi as a guaranteed Chmmr kill would be a good deal, and what's more, it would take a guaranteed 21 minutes to finish. As soon as you open the page, click "download". The page takes just as long to load as the download itself, so you may as well see the progress of it. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Particleman42 on April 10, 2008, 11:43:16 pm Hi! I'm new to the message boards. I'd like to be in this tournament, or maybe next month's so I have time to get better.
Anyway, is there a free IRC client I should use (for Windows)? What do you use? Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 10, 2008, 11:47:31 pm Hi! I'm new to the message boards. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Terrell on April 11, 2008, 05:01:06 am Thraddash takes waaaay too long to finish a fight with it. The guy just sits taking pot shots at you or constantly runs away using the Afterburner. Isn't taking pot-shots at range, and using the afterburner to run away the most sensible way for a human to use the Torch against another human? It doesn't make sense to bum rush something that can hit you way harder than you can hit it, when you have a fairly long range weapon, you just have to make your shots count and be patient. The Thraddash's gun doesn't exactly shoot fast either Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Death 999 on April 15, 2008, 10:44:49 pm Just because the course of action is sensible doesn't mean that it's fun.

I use this thing: http://www.silverex.org/download/ I just realized Firefox actually had its own inbuilt IRC client, I didn't know that. It doesn't matter though, because X-Chat is way faster than Firefox. Edit: Didn't want to double post, I plan on attending the tournament on the 19th. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Sylph on April 17, 2008, 08:39:43 pm Just signed up to say - I'll be coming along to this tournament. I haven't played melee against a human since star control 1 first came out on the amiga, but with any luck I'll add to the numbers and make a few good matches for a few players.
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Particleman42 on April 17, 2008, 10:42:58 pm How long does a tournament normally take, time-wise?
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 17, 2008, 11:34:54 pm How long does a tournament normally take, time-wise? 2-3 hours? I can't give an exact estimate because some people tend to drag their fights out more than others. The last tournament we played was fairly short because we only had 8 people and the handicapped scores made things go by quickly. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: lakota.james on April 18, 2008, 03:00:25 am I'll try to remember to play.
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: PurpleBridge on April 18, 2008, 03:31:59 pm aaah, i checked this site today wondering if and when the next tournament would be and it turns out its tomorrow!
How do i set up the net game? I have got no idea how to set the host and net delay etc... How do i set up the net game? I have got no idea how to set the host and net delay etc... If you can make it into the IRC chatroom the rest should be a cinch. Most of the stuff you see on the connection screen does not need to be messed with. Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Particleman42 on April 19, 2008, 07:22:09 pm So... the tournament's in 2 hours...
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Lurker on April 19, 2008, 08:34:59 pm ... I did remember this, this time, but I was too busy to join. Sorry about that again...
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: Shiver on April 19, 2008, 10:19:00 pm Tournament Synopsis: Turnout has been very bad, but half the players are brand new so that's a plus. Six people showed up, one of them left. The person who had to split was Elvish Pillager, the rest of the players were relatively new. I felt it would be stupid if I stomped all over a couple of newbies and declared myself TOURNAMENT WINNER so I canceled the tournament. The newbies played a couple games afterwards, which I think Sylph came out on top of.
Title: Re: April Melee Tournament Post by: PurpleBridge on April 21, 2008, 11:12:49 am i really wanted to join in on this one but was a bit busy! I will make it to the next one for sure!
