Title: Melee Stunt Videos 2: The Quickening
Post by: Shiver on August 16, 2008, 02:33:26 am
I've recently figured out how to prevent my videos from being thrown in a blender when I upload them to streaming websites, so this seems like a good occasion to post some new stunt videos. No tedious downloads will be involved this time, just hop right in. If you have any clips of your own, I will edit them into this first post for you so interested viewers may access them quickly. The other purpose of this thread is for you the viewer to conceive completely over the top UQM melee challenges for me. If it sounds entertaining and I can pull it off, I'll probably end up making a video of it.

Zoq-Fot-Pik vs. Kohr-Ah done better

I've made a video of this before, so I decided to be a perfectionist this time around. I imposed a time limit of 60 seconds and a "no damage sustained" rule upon myself.

Link: Viddler (http://www.viddler.com/explore/Shiver/videos/3/)

Shofixti vs. Kohr-Ah

Another repeat. This one took me far too many attempts. If anyone wants to be a masochist, go ahead and try to top this video by doing the same thing in less time without taking a hit. I'll say something nice about you if you do it.

Link: Viddler (http://www.viddler.com/explore/Shiver/videos/6/)

VUX vs. Two Earthlings

SSM wanted me to beat Earthling with VUX. I can't demonstrate the dynamic between the VUX Intruder and Earthling Cruiser with just one bout, so here's two. This one was more fun than I thought it would be to play. I almost made it through this without taking any damage whatsoever, but got careless near the end.

Link: Viddler (http://www.viddler.com/explore/Shiver/videos/5/)

Ur-Quan vs. The Old Alliance of Free Stars

There seems to be a right way for Ur-Quan to trounce each individual Alliance vessel without getting beat up too badly. This test of endurance can be a lot of fun once you get the routine for every Allied ship down. If I had to rank them in order of which ships piss me off the most, the list would be Yehat, Chenjesu, Arilou, Earthling, Syreen, Mmrnmhrm, Shofixti.

Link: Viddler (http://www.viddler.com/explore/Shiver/videos/7/)

Fun with Druuge

Several isolated matches of Druuge at its best against the computer. The opponents are Earthling, Chenjesu, Kohr-Ah and Mycon. There is no way I could have beaten all of these in a row.

cool. good vids. Think you can beat a cruiser with a VUX? that would be a great video.

If I load a VUX and an Earthling into the simulator and just go at it, the VUX will win almost automatically by starting with its gun pressed against Earthling's bow. But I know what you have in mind and that's worth a try.

EDIT: Done.

I think it would be entertaining to see a single Ur-Quan face the entire old Alliance line, if you can do that.

Also, the music in the ZFP video is awesome (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u23kaCfomRA).

Did it once before, so I suppose I can make time for it again. It was my best of the older video set. You might have already seen it.

We can do a speedrun challenge of a Arilou vs. Arilou fight. I know that would take a while; especially against an awesome difficulty.

Same thing with a 5 on 5, VUX vs VUX mirror match. Or what about a single ship vs. a whole armada of Slylandro probes?

Did you figure out how to do Ilwrath vs Chmmr? if so, that'd be a good one to put up.

Ugh, I hate that one. I don't suppose you can record and edit videos? It would be nice to see a few that don't have my name on them.

Not sure I want to run with any of these suggestions. Mirror matches aren't very visually exciting. Mmrnhrm mirror in PVP is pretty cool, but that's all I can think of. The Arilou and Slylandro are the AI's "fuck you" ships so I'm sure I'll be dealing with them at some point.

Zoq-Fot-Pik vs. Kohr-Ah done better

Players: Shiver, Awesome Cyborg.

Synopsis: I've made a video of this before, so I decided to be a perfectionist this time around. I imposed a time limit of 60 seconds and a "no damage sustained" rule upon myself.

Should be shown to anyone who thinks that the Awesome Cyborg is a worthy opponent.

Very true. The problem with PVP recordings is that you get about 95% stand-offs or immediate steamrollings and only 5% epic clashes. Maybe some choreographed PVP would be more fun to watch.

Update update update! It's a damn good one too, you guys best take a peak.

It does a lot of things well. Did you notice how long the Yehat took a constant beating before it croaked? I haven't seen any player work the shields that well. The computer's Arilou is almost immortal, but it doesn't warp away from shots that spawn an inch away from it very consistently.

Yeah, AI 'Quan versus shofixti the computer's a total idiot and launches fighters. RIght - that's the point-blank glory device range plus all the fighters it's launched, that's some fairly hefty damage for 6 crew.

how about beating a couple juggers with an avatar?
A couple times I was able to beat a marauder with a skiff. I'm not sure if it's worthy of the stunt videos, but it was pretty fun to play and probably to watch.

Hmm. On the theme music mashup, I wonder how it would work out if you dialed back the Orz a touch, so it wouldn't just be that,  with a few moments of other themes mixed in (e.g. Syreen, around 0:40, and a few 'come in peace'es). I never heard most of the music in the game.

You only hear songs other than Orz and Zoq-Fot-Pik in the first place because I did heavy editing of each song's volume. The Ur-Quan theme had to get turned way down as well because it was making this horrible rumbling sound that blocked out most of the quieter parts. I ramp up the Starbase Commander theme at the start, the Syreen very far in and the Yehat near the end. I'm thinking of doing the cacophony project a second time, but it is not a large priority of mine.

After watching these videos I'm kinda glad I've never been able to go in any of the tournaments because Shiver would slaughter me in seconds :P Oh well I'm a better Kohr Ah player than the computer and i know that's nothing to be proud of but at least its something.

There are better players than me, they just don't make videos. I'm gonna try and crank out another clip or two before Spore comes out and eats up all my free time for the next month or more.

Lol I wasnt saying you were the best i was just saying i'm really bad :) Maybe i should actually practice a bit. Actually after watching your videos i kinda went oh... thats what ive been doing wrong.

I've changed my opinion of the Ur-Quan as well, I used to think it was kinda a waste of RU's but now i know if you fly it right it is pretty strong. After watching your Alliance slaughter I played As Quan and killed about 5 ships in a row (me so proud )

Well there are a lot of other players here who are closer to your level.  And also "Newbie Tournaments" from which players like Shiver are excluded.  But even aside from that, there's no reason to avoid the tournaments just because of the expert players there.  Getting brutally owned in Super-Melee can be a pretty fun experience.

Oh I'm up for the challenge, sadly I'm in Western Australia and our time-zones tend to be slightly misaligned for online play unless i get up at like 4 in the morning or something. But hey I get enough SC enjoyment just reading these threads so I'm happy enough

A Druuge melee video has been sitting on the first post for a few days, but I didn't post anything about it because I thought I could squeeze in one more before announcing. As much as I'd like to make another stunt video so that Anthony Suarez can ignore it on his blog in favor of less impressive clips he found on YouTube, I just don't have the time this week. And I won't want to be screwing around with a 15 year old game once I've got Spore.

Are you suggesting Spore is better than SC2?! :o SACRILEGE!
In the name of the Twin Gods of Star Control, OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!!

(Hey, if Valaggar isn't going to do his job, someone has to.)

Also, the new video is my favorite.

Heh, I really like how the music crescendoes right when the Druuge victory ditty would be playing after the Earthling match.

What is that music, by the way?

Something out of the Boondock Saints soundtrack. You could probably pirate that, but I'm not sure where.

I'm so sorry.  :'( I can't believe that I missed these.  They're awesome.  I know it's a bit late, but I shared one of your videos on my blog (http://starcontroller.com/?p=433).

And thanks for all your comments.  I love reading those.

I was worried I had offended you at some point so it was deliberate on your end. Too many pointless arguments and too much drama around here, can't remember whose toes I've stepped on anymore. Thanks for hosting that video, it's the best I've done so far.

Nononono... I'm not offended at all.  I meant the "I'm so sorry" as a form of humor.  I'm just glad that I found them, that's all. :P

I don't know I simply love that. sick blazer formation and so one...that would be awsome...and a awsome way to tell a story or something similar....I SIMPLY LOVE THIS IDEA!!!

You'd've taken a lot less damage in the Kzer-Za vrs. Earthling if you'd sent out a couple fighters every so often to make the Earthling waste battery taking 'em out with the lasers rather than shooting missiles at you.

I went into the game and tried this. Can't say it seems like a very good idea. The fighters aren't very fast so they don't even reach Earthling half of the time. When they do, it's only -4 energy. Nukes aren't very accurate to begin with so I don't see the point.

That was the worst encounter I've had against Earthling while playing the Ur-Quan challenge. Usually the CPU doesn't reach the planet before I get it. I'm not complaining though, given what my worst encounter against several of the other allied ships was like.

Title: Re: Melee Stunt Videos 2: The Quickening
Post by: Cyarus on November 07, 2008, 06:05:32 am
Hm, I just tried it and it worked rather well. I mean, we're talking about the Awesome Cyborg here, not a human player, so the Cyborg can be expected to use the laser defenses whenever a fighter is attacking. Space out the fighters by a second and a half or so and he'll spend most of his time trying to take them out rather than shooting missiles at you, allowing you to gravity-whip at him and slaughter him while only losing about 4-6 crew (fighters) in the process, which is less than you're likely to lose from missiles.

Of course, that's assuming you don't start out near the planet right away and get to gravity-whip at the beginning anyway, in which case the Earthling's screwed.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my post that the rest of the video and the other videos were cool. They were. :P

Hello All!  I'm new here, well I've lurked for ages but only been compelled to post just by this one thing (it was just an excuse, really, to join.  I have lots of questions and input and I'm a huge UQM fan).

At any rate what it is is I want to know what song is playing durring the "Ur-Quan versus Old Alliance" video durring the segment of the Ur-Quan versus the Chejesu Broodhome... the Piano piece.  What is it, it's awesome!

I think it's one of the combat tunes from FreeSpace 2, but I don't have the CDs with me to confirm that. In any case, you can extract the soundtrack from the game with Game Audio Player (http://www.fileplanet.com/164521/160000/fileinfo/Game-Audio-Player), IIRC.

FreeSpace 2 is a classic (1999) space combat simulator and available for download at Good Old Games (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/freespace_2) (including soundtrack download!) for only $6 (US). Combined with the FS2 equivalent of the UQM project, the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (http://scp.indiegames.us/), the result is quite impressive even for 2008.

I'm sure I can do Pkunk against Chmmr, but making it entertaining to watch might be difficult.

Update: I'm really not feeling this right now. I might get the VUX/Androsynth video posted in here eventually, but otherwise don't want to commit to making any more videos.

Thanks chaps; I went ahead and bought the game -not just for the soundtrack but for two other reasons: 1: I've been aching for something to play with a joystick; mine's gathering dust (quite literally) and it looks quite good and I seem to remember it got good reviews way back when; and 2: I fully support what GOG is doing and most of all their distribution of games sans DRM.  Take note, gaming industry, I am voting with my wallet!
