Title: Quick shout for any graphics able person
Post by: Lukipela on September 02, 2008, 09:26:01 am
Hey guys,

I figured I'd liven up the forum a bit, but I seem to have hit a snag. I'm otherwise pretty ready to start us out on a big exciting adventure, but my graphics skill are way below average.

This isn't terrible per se. We can totally do this with whatever I manage to scrape up, which means very little (crappy) graphics and lots of text. However, if anyone who knows their way around some sort of graphics program would be willing to help me out with pointers and materials, this could be a bit better. It's not really work intensive (I think). So if you happen to have a bit of spare time, PM me and I'll let you know what I need. Oh, and there's a reward (of sorts) involved as well.

Anyhow, watch this space. In a few days we might have embarked on a splendid adventure! Or, you know, all died. I'm not quite sure yet.

I can amateur photoshop. If you need anything more sophisticated then you'd better ask someone else. Please think of me as your last option, I'd rather spend spare time setting up the Mmrnmhrm update for the net melee guide.

Start a separate thread once you've got actual content for your Choose Your Own Adventure or Let's Play or whatever it is you're doing.

I'd rather see you spend time on the guide than devote too much to this. Like I said, if worst comes to worst I'll simply set it up myself, with fairly basic graphics (okay stone age graphics but still). This is just in case someone wants to contribute.

Yeah, I'll lock this thread and announce the new one when it comes to that.

I'm fairly good with graphics editing and I have some skills in Photoshop.  I do have some spare time every now and then, and I'd be willing to spend some spare time on this.

Thanks for the support guys. I've preliminary asked Anthony and Amiga with help on two different subjects to speed things up. I'll keep you as a back-up Dabir, thanks for your offer. I'm locking this thread until it is needed again.

Soon there will be blood.

Sorry about the delay, I was a bit optimistic with my timing, and the graphics got delayed. It's my fault though, no blame falls on the graphics guys at all.

Dabir managed to find some time and I sent him all my horribly ugly attempts at doing something really simple. Work is progressing well, but just in order to remind myself, I thougth I'd let you know that a new thread and something new and (hopefully) interesting in the SC universe will open next week. The system is in place and if Dabir can't make it we will start off with rickety pictures and upgrade once he is done.

So you should be excited. Very excited. Load your weapons and prepare yourselves.

Title: Unrelated fanatsy map editor
Post by: Lukipela on January 29, 2009, 07:44:47 pm
Hey guys!

For the good of the planet I'm recycling this topic rather than starting a new one. I'm currently looking at a small side project which is being cramped by my enormous lack of skillz in the art department. I've decided to press on regardless and just do it without graphics, but I need a map. Can anyone recommend a good program for generating fantasy maps? I tried to look around but didn't really find anything.

Wiser from the last project (and keeping in mind other obligations) this wont start in a while, but I'd like to get a head start.

EDIT: I was going to edit the title to reflect this new turn of events, but it turns out I can't modify older posts. Any specific reason for this? Oh well, this is graphics related as well so I guess it'll do the trick.

It's not quite what yout're looking for (ie: general tile editors rather than a fantasy one) but if you look in this thread (http://retroremakes.com/forum/index.php/topic,48.0.html) under tile/map editors there're some useful utils there.

Thanks, some of that stuff looks quite helpful. I'll check it out. Leaving the thread open for a bit in case someone else happens to know a really good, beautiful, easy to use and free map creator.

Good is subjective to what you need, is it not? What features do you need?

Is this for your SC RPG / GM project?

Ideally, I'd like something where I can place mountains, draw rivers, zone plains, deserts, swamps and so forth. Oh, and it has to be free and look good  :)

More realistically, I've been playing around with a program called Artrage, to get some sort of primitive drawn map. So far I've progressed rather quickly, from what a 2 year old can do on a piece of paper to what a 4 year old can do on a piece of paper. Progress is slowing down though.

It is for a SC RPG project. The current one is running well enough with what it is, even though I should've asked Dabir for more sprites. I've got two small side projects going, one where I'd need a fantasy type map and one where I'd need to create a nice looking HS map and draw borders and stuff on it. The problem with these are that I'd like to illustrate them, but my skills fall short. And because they are pretty open ended (unlike the current one), I can't prepare graphics, I need to produce them on the fly. So I'm settling for just maps to start with.
