Title: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Shiver on September 06, 2008, 01:08:35 am We are all of the same opinion that SC2 was the best game
Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: SweetSassyMolassy on September 06, 2008, 08:46:45 am There were a lot of great games released in 1992, none the calibur of Star Control of course, but notable titles are:
Super Mario Kart Mortal Kombat Wolfenstein 3D I didn't answer either of your questions, except that there are other games at least capable of being in the running for game of the year Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Quote 23:15 <+robot> NightShadow_PT: SC2 was not a hit by industry standards. Forgive my bad English; I realised it even at the time, just after I pressed enter.23:16 <@Meep-Eep> robot: even for those days? I thought it sold good 23:16 <+robot> Meep-Eep: Unfortunately it didn't sell that well. We were drowned by Wing Commander almost immediately. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Novus on September 06, 2008, 11:15:03 am This depends a lot on where you are and on what platform. I'm using Wikipedia's List of best selling computer and video games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best_selling_computer_and_video_games) and article on 1992 in video gaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_in_video_gaming) and my own memory as a starting point, and taking a European perspective on 1992.
The 8-bit home computers were pretty much dying at the time; this was around the time I got a PC. Lemmings was big on several platforms (old news on the Amiga on which it originated, though); for example, CPC Attack! rated it the best Amstrad CPC game ever. The Amiga was starting to lose its position as the computer to have to the PC, thanks to games like Wolfenstein 3D that made use of the PC's raw CPU power to do what other systems could not. Similarly, the introduction of the CD-ROM allowed games that made heavy use of video; The 7th Guest and Night Trap were big at the time. Dune II introduced lots of new players to the RTS genre. The NES had recently been supplanted by the SNES, with Super Mario World almost ubiquitous. Similarly, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Mega Drive. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Shiver on September 06, 2008, 08:14:30 pm I found a few others that weren't mentioned: Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. No MicroProse stuff this year, though.
Quote <+robot> Meep-Eep: Unfortunately it didn't sell that well. We were drowned by Wing Commander almost immediately. The earliest two Wing Commander games plus most of the various expansions and spin-offs came out before then. I don't doubt that the series flooded stores for years afterward. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Veep Neep on September 09, 2008, 11:27:26 pm I was thinking MOO because I played that one at the same time as SC2, but was the year after.
...but still those two together are reason I missed 25 days of junior year and had to go to summer school. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: AngusThermopyle on September 10, 2008, 03:53:36 pm Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition and Dune 2 were also released that year. Both were huge games in their own right.
(I, of course, like SC2 better. ;D ) Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Gekko on September 11, 2008, 05:39:39 am '92 was a great year, lots of breakthroughs. Same for 93, wasn't Doom released then? Because I know that Blake Stone was released on 93 and it didn't sell well due to Doom.

Doom was released one week after Blake Stone, apparently.Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? No wonder that got demolished by Doom. I played the demo of that and it was reasonably fun, actually. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Glory_device on September 13, 2008, 05:11:34 am I will use this post as a way to introduce myself so maybe there will be bit of OFF topic here and there...won't do It again I swear!
I remember when I was 5 year old at that time...my uncle was in university at that time... and when he came back to my grand mother house he let me play computer game.... (it was in 1992) ...now it is my turn to go to university (Sherbrooke in canada..like my uncle and dad) From a five year old perspective, I remember playing a lot of melee ....But games that break trough around 1992 for what I can remember...there was the tie-fighter series that got a lot of attention since it was basicly lucasarts. 1992 also mark the beginning of the SNES. Most of the legendary title of the snes were not published until 1994-1995. MOO 1 was a blast and so did MOO 2...however I was in my first day at dorm in university and out of boredom, I bought MOO3 ...horible! Meh to stay on topic, I think what swept away a big part of star control 2 is that the fighting part is pretty easy and enjoyable for the 5 year old boy I was...But, I didn't know how to speak in english...nor did I know to read in my native langage...It wasn't until I was like 15 or 16 that I ventured in story mode.... and I guess that would explain a bit why wing commander, dune II etc etc.. swept SC2. I will always like SC2 as one of the best game ever and my favorite ship is and always will be the Scout (you can do some good without blowing yourself up!) Post by: Waylander on September 25, 2008, 01:07:17 pm Um if you were 5 in 1992 doesnt that make you 21 this year? cos i was born in 1987 (which would make me 5 in '92) and im 21 this year...
I cant really remember much from that far back but going on what i do remember it was my parents who really got into SC and Doom and such. Later at like 8 or 9 I got more interested and kicked serious buttocks :P. I was more of a console boy when i was younger though, NES and SNES all the way. I actually still have a working NES and SNES in my cupboard, I pull them out when i get nostalgic. Title: Re: If Star Control 2 wasn't GOTY in 1992... what was? Post by: Glory_device on September 25, 2008, 02:18:23 pm true....I was 3 not 5 XD...but still I played star control 2 :D!!!

I remember wondering what 1990 would be like. '90' felt very futuristic compared to 87 or something. Decades has gone by, computers are faster than I had imagined, but the gameplay evolution has been sorely disappointing to the kid in me which had such high hopes. |
