Title: January Net Melee Tournament
Post by: Shiver on January 13, 2009, 04:55:25 am
We are having another net melee tournament. This time around we will be playing with the tried-and-true standard net melee rule set. No bizarre gimmicks or handicaps, just good clean intergalactic warfare. You are more than welcome to turn up.

[Date]

Saturday, January 24th, 2009.

[Time]

    *  5 AM Sydney
    *  7 AM Otaki
    * 12 PM Los Angeles
    *  1 PM Denver
    *  2 PM Chicago
    *  3 PM New York
    *  8 PM London
    *  9 PM Paris
    *  10 PM Helsinki

[Place]

#UQM-Arena on irc://chat.freenode.net. If you don't know how any of this stuff works, this thing (http://gekko.frud.biz/uqmtutorial/) that Gekko wrote may be of use to you.

[Tournament Rules]

1) There is a maximum fleet size of 200 points for all players.
2) Do not use more than one of any ship type.
3) No Thraddash Torch.
4) The "stalemate breaker" rule is in effect. There has been confusion regarding this numerous times, so here is the rule in its verbose entirety:

Stalemates

Rule: In the spirit of competition, both players should employ whatever tactics they consider most effective. This may result in a stalemate at some point. If so, the faster of the two ships becomes a designated attacker. The attacker does not necessarily have to make a bee-line directly for the defender, but they are required to take the initiative.

Explanation: Stalemates are bound to happen. We found this rule to be a relatively painless solution. The decision to use speed as a stalemate-breaker did not significantly reduce the effectiveness of Star Control's fastest ships. As it turned out, the most mobile combatants were best suited to withstand such a penalty.

[Tournament Structure]

We will be playing for three rounds using Swiss tournament rules, meaning that you will play against other defeated players if you lose a match. There will be an additional final round between undefeated contestants if a clear winner has not emerged.

I'll be there, most likely. Though for some reason I think I organized something else on Saturday. Don't know what it was though.

The most common stalemate I've faced is Androsynth vs. Ilwrath. People, androsynth is supposed to comet in that fight.

January tournament? I'll hang around on the chat and see how this all goes, I can also offer some test practice/warm up for new players if they're inclined as well.

Reminder: The tournament is tomorrow. I hope we get a decent number of players. See you all then.

Weak turn-out today. We had six people, but two of them dropped. Congratulations to Gekko, winner of the tournament. His games were:

hansolo0 defeated by 132 points
Tiberian defeated by 11 points
Shiver defeated by 55 points

Sorry for dropping out! Especially to hansolo0, as I left in the middle of my fight with him... :'(
It was one of those unpredictable real-life things that need immediate attention... I hope that something like this won't happen ever again.

Not to sound like the nolife asshole I am, but to forgive you for dropping out, one of these conditions had to be met:

a: There was a fire.
b: There was an earthquake.
c: There was a riot.
d: You had a personal medical emergency.

Other than that I can't think of a way to forgive you. I'm hoping 'c'.

One other thing. You guys can choose the ruleset we use next time around. Anyone with an account can vote on this, though the votes of people who actually show up and play at these events are worth more. The options are:

Standard ruleset.
100 with duplicate ships.
Auction house.
200 points, random selection, no Chmmr or Kohr-Ah allowed.

I give my  vote to 100 points, duplicates.

Would be fun to play a non-capital ship tournament too.

Also, I edited my game with Tiberian  (http://gekko.frud.biz/uqmtutorial/videos/uqm_tournament_2_gekko_vs_tiberian.avi) as it was the best fight I've had for a while. Quite even, both sides had kicks of luck and misluck and the ending was not really clear until the last fights.

Edit: For those who don't want music with their download, here's (http://gekko.frud.biz/uqmtutorial/videos/uqm_tournament_2_gekko_vs_tiberian_2.avi) a non-music version.

200 points, random selection, no Chmmr or Kohr-Ah allowed.

This one seems fun :)

(no, I certainly didn't pick this because I can barely kill a ZFP with a Kohr-Ah, and an enemy Kohr-Ah who knows what he's doing will destroy 3/4 of my 200-point fleet (yes, it did happen: Gekko did it to me :-[))

On a more serious note:

No Chmmr/Kohr-Ah seems good, but I'd first like to see the Auction. Haven't played anything like it before, and the randomness can cause lots of fun (and we can finally see the Dreadnought!).

Gekko:

Why, oh WHY did you have to put some lame-ass music in the background? I'm pretty sure that everybody who would want to watch the video, would prefer to have the game sounds only.

Side note: I've always hated it when interesting videos are ruined by adding some unrelated background music.

also, about the vote:

I prefer 200 points, groups and play-offs.

I should compliment Shiver's choice then... especially the Ur-Quan vs. Alliance video. Perfect fit :)

Sorry for being boring then. I originally did it without music, but as I watched all those loooooong fights it went boring.

I wouldn't know what songs to use to cover a 30 minute interval either. Maybe Jazz or something.

That wasn't an option but I'll take it into consideration.
