Title: I found a copy of SC3. How should I brace myself?
Post by: NamelessPlayer on February 28, 2009, 04:07:15 am
It turns out that while checking out some neighbors' library of old Classic Mac OS software a while back, one of those games happened to be Star Control 3. I figured that I might as well play it to find out exactly why it sucks rather than just jump on the Internet bandwagon because everyone else said so, especially now that I have my own old PowerBook that can boot OS 9 if needed to run the game. (And, of course, I can boot into OS X to play the greatest game of all time on that same machine and have more direct comparisons.)

I know about the bastardized animatronic puppet forms of all the races I've come to know and love, but what else should I expect?

Main problem I found was getting stuck in a loop you cant get out of. Like you do things in a certain order and then there's no way you can finish. This scenario is unlikely but can happen.

More likely annoyances:
1) bland-coloured spaceships
2) Having no leads left so jusrt waiting around for an event to occure
3) Finding out out what happened to the precursors
4) The horrifyingly unattractive syreen

I could go on.

In some ways its a good game. Just suffers when you compare with the SC1 and 2

Star Control 3 owns. Go read some reviews if you need definitive proof.

Save often with distinct descriptive names so if you get totally stuck due to a bug you can back out to before the problem occurred.

Stop time before any jump to a different system so that if an event occurs that adds a ship to your system, you won't leave and screw up the event.

Press F7 as soon as you enter combat so you can understand what's going on.

Actively seek out Rainbow Worlds, not for material gain but simply for the chance to have a conversation and maybe a fight with the Owa, who have a fun and original main weapon and a bright green ship. Shame their secondary is the hopeless backshot.

I liked SC3, by and large. It was an interesting fusion of SC1 and SC2. I enjoyed building my own colonies, interacting with the races, etc. I felt that the dialog was not nearly as bad as some have made it out. I especially liked my Game Wizard memory editor, which gave me as much RU and Energy points as I needed.

As pointed out, however, the event engine was terrible. There would be times when events would not occur, or you'd be stuck doing nothing while you waited for an event to happen, or something else. I think I beat the game all the way through only a handful of times because the other times I would just get to a point, and then nothing...

I remember coming across a few other bugs from time to time, and the F7 button is completely necessary for melee, but it wasn't a bad game. I wouldn't mind playing a cleaned up version again at some point.

It's been a long time, but I'll try to remember:
  • Especially near the end, you were just running errands. You didn't get the sense of adventure and discovery as in SC2
  • Lame ending
  • Missing SC2 races
  • Most of the SC2 races that were there, were pathetic

This has happened every time I've played the game (so 3 times). Then an eternity passes and nothing happens.

Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Having played the game to completion years and years ago, here were my main gripes:

I already know that you're not expecting an SC2 caliber game. I was, because the game was new when I played it, and that was the biggest disappointment of all.

Well annoying bugs aside its not a BAD game just doesnt live up to it's 'predecessors'

I didn't mind it too much and it did have some interesting new races but yeah mostly mediocre.
