Title: menu selection
Post by: rodan1 on March 14, 2009, 09:14:35 pm
I'm brand new to URQ. I'm also working on a laptop. The problem I'm having is moving  from the screen to some of the menus. For instance when I'm in the starmap and want to get over and click on navigate I can't. Whas up? I think I've tried every key combo in the galaxy!

TIA
John W

I'm not especially fond of "thanks in advance" requests, but I might as well paraphrase the UQM game guide I wrote in high school.

Code:
[]------------- The Controls ------------------------------------------[]

The mouse is not used in this game. Everything is performed on the keyboard.

[IN FLIGHT]
Accelerate ---------------------------- Up Arrow
Rotate clockwise ---------------------- Right Arrow
Rotate counter-clockwise -------------- Left Arrow
Open menu ----------------------------- Spacebar

[MENU]
Change highlighted item --------------- Arrow Keys
Access highlighted item --------------- Enter
Back/Cancel --------------------------- Spacebar

[STAR MAP]
Move cursor --------------------------- Arrow Keys
Zoom In ------------------------------- Plus ( + )
Zoom Out ------------------------------ Minus ( - )
Search by star name ------------------- Slash ( / )
Select destination -------------------- Enter
Close star map ------------------------ Spacebar

[CONVERSATION]
Fast forward dialogue ----------------- Right Arrow
Rewind dialogue ----------------------- Left Arrow
Cycle through dialogue options -------- Up & Down Arrows
Say something ------------------------- Enter
View summary of conversation ---------- Spacebar

[PLANET LANDER SEQUENCE]
Accelerate ---------------------------- Up Arrow
Rotate clockwise ---------------------- Right Arrow
Rotate counter-clockwise -------------- Left Arrow
Fire stun gun ------------------------- R-Shift
Return to flagship -------------------- Escape

[COMBAT]

I saw all these and they work just fine but I'm unable to move from say the star map over to the menu, that is without going up a level in the menus ie by hitting the spacebar. For instance when I plot a course in the starmap and want to move over to the menu with the options; starmap, manifest, game, navigate, so I can hit navigate I can't get there. If I hit the spacebar I go up a level in menus and I don't want to do that.. I hope I'm making myself clear. sorry if I'm not.

I'm pretty sure that you can get from the starmap directly to navigation.

Yes . By clicking [Enter] .
This selects the destination and movement starts . Once in navigation , you can take control from the autopilot by pressing any arrow key .
If you want the menue from there - press [Space] ...

You can't go from the starmap directly to the menu. You have to exit the starmap and then you can access the menu like normal.

I'm not especially fond of "thanks in advance" requests,
Why...Are they that detrimental to your health Shiver?

I sometime say thanks before any help is actually done...it makes yourself sound more appreciative to getting help and therfore more people might be responsive to your needs.

Oh ya...
Thanks for reading this, in advance.

"Thanks in advance" contains the implicit assumption that people are going to do whatever you're asking of them. It is a disrespectful thing to say, although I do appreciate that you took the liberty to highlight this for the rest of the forum. rodan1's use of the expression seemed inadvertent; yours clearly demonstrates my point.

No, saying "thanks in advance" is like saying "I will appreciate it really much when someone responds". It makes it clear that you actually appreciate the help. You are the first person I have known to consider it "disrespectful". I say "thanks in advance" all the time when requesting sprites, music, etc on the GMC.
