Title: Mails and IRC chats with the creators are NOT canon!
Post by: Angelfish on October 20, 2009, 11:58:50 am
Atleast, that's my opinion.
The ultronomicon seems to think otherwise though, so I'm curious as to what you all think about this.
In my opinion, something is only 'set in stone' when it's integrated into a game or into a work of fiction surrounding the game.
If the creators ever make a new game they will likely start out with the ideas they had about the SC universe, like the Orz being a 'projection' of 'them' and so on. However, if such ideas in practice don't work out or the creators get better ideas, they will be changed, as is usual in game design.
I think that, when making fan-based mods or fan fics, we should try to give our readers and players the best experience possible while not straying too far from the known SC2 universe, but as these mails and conversations with the creators are not part of the SC2 universe, they shouldn't drag the user experience down if it so happens to be.
What do you think?

I think it's provisionally canon until something more core supersedes it.

Like, if they change their minds and the Taalo are dead after all, well, the Taalo no longer live. But at this point of time, the Taalo live.

So called "word of god" is a useful tool for filling in gaps in our knowledge, due to certain things being left intentionally or unintentionally left obscure. While it's definitely more useful in the latter case, it's also good to know what the creators had planned for the next installment of the series. Especially since the sequel we crave doesn't seem to be forthcoming any time soon, how better to determine what the writers had in mind than to ask them?

This thread title is offensive. I think it might even be hate speech.

Until someone makes an UQM mod or SC2 sequel that explores that area where they live, and they turn up dead after all.

Then atleast it's stirred up something ;). Anyway, no offense was intended and there certainly was no hating invloved.

I see no reason for it not to be canon. In general I agree with Death999.

I'd say , that as long as the chats/mails/etc don't contradict other sourses (and I don't know of any holes there) they are canon . When (hopefully rather than if) new true installment of the SC title will be created I am rather sure it will still not create holes in the game universe .

I figured that the idea that the canon about present state doesn't apply to the future was too obvious to mention.

Star Trek canon uses things that Gene Roddenberry said all the time. What's the issue here?

Well, odd that you should mention that, since Paramount's canon policy is basically 'only TV and movies is canon'. You can make your own personal canon policy, of course.
