Title: mod ideas
Post by: 120938 on October 23, 2009, 02:26:15 am
i was thinking of mods(i have no experience with mods) but i came up with 2 ideas
1hear the aliens in their own language and see the translations
2different character dress(slight random changes in alien appearance each encounter except on home planets)

can you list any other ideas maby we can pool efforts to create a mod like uqm extended edition
thanks sorry if i seem passive

I have some negative on those ideas - I kind of fail to see added value in this , especially concidering the amount of work that will go into this .
Code-wise this would be really simple - just replace music file and graphics before re-compiling but to have to record all the dialogue for all races for scratch and to re-draw all the visual appearances ...
If you don't speak Japanese , you could install Japaneese voice pack and use English subtitles , might work , though I personally really disliked the voises there .
Again , sorry for being negative .

I think he means hearing the aliens speak in Ur-Quanese and Spathinese etc ;)

I believe Alvarin's point was that Japanese sounds much like Spathinese to the untrained gaijin.

You know , if the game was localized all over the world , it might have been nice to assign each race it's dialect .

I'm pretty sure the aliens' languages don't actually exist, so it'd be kind of hard to record dialog in them.

Look its quite straight forward: you just create whole new languages for all 20 alien races

You can fake it. It's easy!

"Jaffa! Kree! Kree!"

(It's the joke from Stargate: SG1 season 3 episode 'Point of View')

Um... creating a language is actually a lot of work. First you need to design a grammar system together with small, common words such as prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, etc. This part isn't particularly difficult, especially if you choose to make the grammar simple. But then you also need to create a huge vocabulary.

I think I've seen it said somewhere before that it was simply not possible the way they coded it, but I kinda wish the star systems and planetary resources were generated randomly.  I know resource gathering can be tedious as it is, but for replay value that is one thing that has always bothered me.  On the upside, it's not like I ever remember where the good planets are anyway...  ::)

On another note, I know a whole lot of "modernized" graphics of the verious ships have been generated over the years.  Has anyone actually been successful in integrating them into the game or are they just basically eye candy?
