Title: There was a map Post by: BruceWayneUK on February 12, 2010, 02:52:07 am It was glorious.. It was a coloured-in map which depicted the territories of all the races, the rainbow worlds, the quasi-space spots, colours denoting the wealth of a star system, a separate quasi-space section, and had the planet legends of alpha, beta, gamma etc..
I managed to find a very similar looking yet stripped down map which has a quasi-space section, but its in black and white. Does anyone else have a copy? I used to have a copy on my old laptop but it died on me last year, and I thought I had it saved on my external HD but I don't... I been scouring google for days since. From http://www.star-control.com/faq.php I just searched "star control map" and it came up under google image search. And that Is a nice map. I don't see rainbow worlds, though. Well there's a map to them here: http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Rainbow_World You sure it had the Quasi-space coords on it? Quasi-Space map here: http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/QuasiSpace Title: Re: There was a map Post by: BruceWayneUK on February 12, 2010, 11:53:48 am it was none of them.. :(
It was similar to this one: (click to show/hide) Except it was in colour, and it clearly depicted territories, quasi space points (on the map), rainbow worlds, homeworlds, alpha- beta-gamma legends, resource wealthy worlds. As said, it was glorious. I wish I still had it.. Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Huggybaby on February 22, 2010, 05:10:20 am Your request rang a bell. I was pretty sure I had seen a map like what you were talking about. I googled and didn't come up with much but dead links.
I remembered that I had collected a bunch of maps before, preparing for a torrent I never released. I thought it might be on an external hard drive of mine, one that has been relegated to backup duties since I built a new system. But I couldn't find it. Was it in a Star Control II folder? Star Control 2? SC 2? UQM? Ur-Quan Masters? etc. etc. Thanking goodness for Everything File Finder and perseverance, I think I have it for you. If anyone knows who actually made this map please let me know so that I may credit the author. It is indeed beautiful---crystal clear and super-informative. And I'm almost positive it was made by someone on this forum. I have other maps too. Should I package them together? sc2_final_map.png (2.37 MB) http://www.mediafire.com/?fnd2jzrwzyg <edit> This map was made by VileRancour Title: Re: There was a map Post by: CelticMinstrel on February 22, 2010, 11:31:45 pm Now, if that were hosted on an image hosting site rather than a download hosting site, I would go look at it...
Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Huggybaby on February 23, 2010, 01:33:31 am I don't understand that logic. Is a 2MB download too big? Is MediaFire dangerous? Is it too many steps to download?
Well, whatever the reason: (http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4742/sc2finalmap.th.png) (http://img26.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sc2finalmap.png) Title: Re: There was a map Post by: CelticMinstrel on February 23, 2010, 03:56:22 pm Simply that it's an image, which I would want to view in my browser; I can't do that on MediaFire, can I?

Did you even try it? The MediaFire link gives you a View this image button, for crying out loud. ::)Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Lukipela on February 23, 2010, 08:29:49 pm I would love to get my hand on the original for that, assuming that it's a vector file of some sort you could open and edit. It'd be really handy.
Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Vee-R on March 23, 2010, 10:43:41 pm Ha, nice to see that old map of mine still making the rounds. Glad to hear it's useful.
I would love to get my hand on the original for that, assuming that it's a vector file of some sort you could open and edit. It'd be really handy. Unfortunately it's a big Photoshop file with purely raster layers - I made that quite a while before I'd learned anything about vectors (not that I know that much about them today). Maybe it's time for a smarter/nicer version, if I ever do find the time... I seem to remember something about one of the UQM team members working on a map generator program with similar-looking output? Could be wrong though. Could be wrong though. There's a map generator program in the tools/map directory of the UQM SVN tree. Nothing much has happened to it since 2007. Its output looks something like this (http://koti.mbnet.fi/lonnberg/starmap.png). Basically, it takes a bunch of images and star, cluster and sphere of influence definitions and combines them to a map.Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Huggybaby on March 24, 2010, 09:09:46 pm Hey VileRancour, thanks for checking in so I can now give proper attribution. :)
I don't know how vector graphics would improve the current map, unless someone was wanting to blow it up to billboard size. As an aside, as far as maps go, spoilers don't bother me, the more info the better. Folks that don't like spoilers already have plenty of options. So if someone wanted to add even more info to this map I'd definitely use it. I'd still love to have that file if you're willing to share it. Odd though, I could swear there's an image of it in Inkscape somewhere on the Ultronomicon. Title: Re: There was a map Post by: BruceWayneUK on April 26, 2010, 09:54:51 pm Huggybaby, THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And VileRancour, I salute you for making such an awesome map!! I'm going to save this on a public photobucket account so it can be googled forever. (smiles). Title: Re: There was a map Post by: Lukipela on April 26, 2010, 10:06:19 pm Yeah, it's going up on PNF with a unch of other maps as well pretty soon (hopefully).
