Title: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on March 17, 2010, 08:07:32 pm Hey guys. It’s time to play another game. Last time, we were a happy Pkunk figuring out what it really means to be a Pkunk (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4637.0). This time, it’s going to be slightly different.. There are some structural differences sure, but there’s also a pretty big mental leap to take.
But let’s start with what is still the same. You’ll still be reading a story and picking options. The option that gets the most votes is chosen, and then you get to do the same thing again and again until we reach some sort of end. You’ll still be posting your votes in the story thread (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4637.0) and other comments/criticisms/feedback right here in the OOC thread. So far, so good eh? Now for the differences. Technically, this isn’t an ever branching tree like the last one. There are much fewer branches, and some rejoin others later on. There are objects around this time too, only attainable if you choose certain paths. They may open up other options later on. And here’s the kicker. This time around, you can die. And dying doesn’t mean reincarnation; it means the game is over. This isn’t a Sierra game, so there will be some clues as to what is a good idea and what isn’t. Also like last time, we’ll be playing this with our good buddies over on the SCDB (http://www.star-control.com/community/index.php). The new SCDB that is. The story forks dramatically at the beginning, so I’ll be forcing you to take different first choices. The forum with the most posts for an option gets to go that way. Since the stories are quite different, feel free to participate in both if you like. Storywise, we’re not quite in SC canon territory any more either. We’re far beyond known space and firmly in fan fiction territory. Some of it is based on the discussions in this thread (http://www.star-control.com/forum/index.php/topic,2075.0.html). The rest is all part of my imagination. This may make the game less interesting for some, but I hope you’ll enjoy the ride nonetheless. Also, feel free to ask as many in-game questions as you want to in the game thread. Our character will answer the best it can, but being young and inexperienced you may not get all the answers. The story has been pre-written and I’ll update once a week. Maximum length is around two months, minimum around 1 month. Let’s see how well you do. It’s time to grow up. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on March 23, 2010, 05:10:57 pm Okay, so here is the deal. The SCDB had 9 total votes, 5 for the cave and 4 for sailing. The UQMF had 7 total votes with 4 for the cave and 3 for sailing. Both groups would like to go into the caves, but the SCDB had more total votes and more cave votes, so that’s their story. The UQMF will be going sailing instead. From this point onward, the adventures diverge, not to be reunited until the very end of the adventure (or maybe not?). Next update in a week, where you’ll be making a new exciting choice.
Set sail mateys, we’re going to sea! Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on March 31, 2010, 07:29:59 pm So, we've got three votes for 1 and three votes for 2. I flipped a coin and 1 won somehow.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on April 08, 2010, 06:33:03 pm So, we've got nine votes for 1 and no votes for 2. North it is then!
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Angelfish on April 08, 2010, 09:13:18 pm I'm glad that this one isn't a spathi vs shofixti choice ;)
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Death 999 on April 09, 2010, 04:36:47 pm I don't understand what's so odd about seeing clouds on the horizon.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on April 15, 2010, 07:37:27 pm I don't understand what's so odd about seeing clouds on the horizon. Hmm... I seem to have dropped a few sentences in there while proofreading. The clouds are big and dark and only swirl around a certain patch on the horizon. when you get closer you realize that this corresponds to the whirlpool. I guess just having clouds on the horizon isn't that scary :) Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on April 15, 2010, 07:40:13 pm So, we've got two votes for 1, five votes for 2 and two votes for 3.. It's treasure time! You're a bit more adventurous than the SCDB.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on April 22, 2010, 07:52:04 pm All six of you want to continue onwards. Onwards it is!
EDIT: All seven as D999 posted a minute before I finished this post. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on April 29, 2010, 06:43:53 pm Everyone is going below deck. I've written ad choices when everyone agrees :(
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: RTyp06 on April 30, 2010, 02:14:36 am Is see the SCDB bit it. Now if we just don't do anything stupid we might just make it back.
To me our last choices seemed a little weighted. Hmmm use a quest piece in the game, attack the guard or wait for him to fall asleep?...And the previous choices: Storm straight into the captain's quarters or free the syreen? Let's not make these choices too easy! btw great story so far and I find it interesting that every SC race seems to be inhabiting the shofixti home world. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Draxas on April 30, 2010, 03:59:54 pm My theories are still developing on why that is. Suffice to say, I don't believe this story takes place on Delta Gorno I. ;)
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Alvarin on April 30, 2010, 04:32:45 pm Anyone read Niven's RingWorld? I'm pretty positive this is either small version of it, or it's a generation starship.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 02, 2010, 05:40:19 pm btw great story so far and I find it interesting that every SC race seems to be inhabiting the shofixti home world. For a certain value of homeworld I suppose that is right. My theories are still developing on why that is. Suffice to say, I don't believe this story takes place on Delta Gorno I. ;) Depending on how the poll (http://www.star-control.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=10&p=1651#p1651) goes we may get to explore this world further and discover more about it. Maybe then you'll find out more ;) Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 06, 2010, 07:59:26 pm Mostlyones there I see. Very well then, off we go!
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Draxas on May 06, 2010, 08:13:49 pm Hooray! We survived!
I was expecting more from the conclusion, but oh well. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 06, 2010, 08:27:33 pm Not every adventure has a grand finale, especially not the potential first one in a suite ;)
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Alvarin on May 06, 2010, 08:34:41 pm I kind of understood that we would end in a cave for the last part, as you said in the beginning, but I guess it was onnly from the cave side.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: RTyp06 on May 07, 2010, 05:29:04 pm Well the last few set of choices seemed to have more narrative weight placed upon one choice or the other imo. Very cool little adventure though and I definately would like to explore more of it. In the mean time I have an itch for some day trading.

Yeah, you guys interpreted the situation a bit differently than I did when writing it I think. Looking back, the quest given should have been made weaker and I should've included some stronger reasoning for visiting the captains quarter. Oh well, the HTML version may be a bit improved. Quote Very cool little adventure though and I definately would like to explore more of it. In the mean time I have an itch for some day trading. Glad you liked it. I write these mostly to amuse the forum denizens, so it's good if they fulfil their purpose. The poll runs out in about a week, so I guess after that we see what happens next. If we don't return to this world now though, there may be some time until the next chance, I've got other things queuing up. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 17, 2010, 08:43:38 am And the poll has run its course. Next up is a Mycon adventure that will run only on the SCDB. Feel free to pzrticipate, I'll bump this thread as a FYI once it gets going.
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: CelticMinstrel on May 17, 2010, 04:01:37 pm On your conclusion post, you seem to be confused about the gender of the Syreen prisoner. :)
Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 19, 2010, 09:43:14 pm Whoops, I'll fix that. Thanks for noticing!

Feel free to pzrticipate, I'll bump this thread as a FYI once it gets going. Why only on the SCDB ? Just curious. btw I hope this decision to only run it on one board didn't have anything to do with my one chiding comment opon their demise in the last adventure. I'll admit I do sometimes have a competitive spirt even though the two games weren't meant to be competitive and some people were participating in both. Here's a far off, future idea for you. Pit SCDB against the UQM board. One side is the Druuge the other the Melnorme. The classic good vs. evil. He who has the most credits at the end of the financial adventure wins. Each board could have a private sub forum only available to his or her side. Or we could find a place for private conversation. The adventure would unfold in public market(s) information available to all. The private place would be used to discuss investment strategy and aquisitions. Perhaps each side starts with a budget and can enter auction bids towards quest items to try to turn a profit with them. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on May 22, 2010, 09:34:42 am Hey RTyp06! The reason for running it only on one board was detailed in the poll question over on the SCDB, but I guess I could elaborate on it here as well. Basically, the Melnorme game would have consisted of a number of events that would appear randomly. That stuff can be pre-written and thus it's easy to run it on two boards at the same time, much like the Pkunk and Shofixti adventures.
The Mycon adventure was originally supposed to work like that too, but building a religion is tricky work and I soon ran into a too large branching tree. So there will be suggested options, but also the ability to vote for whatever takes ones fancy. That means I write as we go along, which in turns means I can't do it on two forums at once. As for why on the SCDB, there are really two reasons. First off, I've been running BEL as an UQM exclusive for quite some time, whereas the last time the SCDB had an exclusive was ABKS. So they're due. Secondly, the SCDB is much livelier than this place nowadays and I know there are a lot of people on there who are good at participating in this kind of open adventures, whereas last time someone tried to start something here it fizzled out and died. There will still be double adventures in the future, but I've got a lot on my plate. Anyone else who wants to step up and write one is welcome to do so. I didn't read the poll description beyond my poll choice other than a quick skim. I didn't even think the mycon story would be chosen. Should be interesting none the less. Your logic is solid. Quote There will still be double adventures in the future, but I've got a lot on my plate. Anyone else who wants to step up and write one is welcome to do so. I may have to clean up my own plate a little bit and see what I can come up with. Thanx. Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on June 05, 2010, 05:07:02 pm Your logic is solid. Even more so now apparently. Death 999 tried to recruit peopel for a game here. Alvarin tried twice. Dabir is trying now. Most of the people playing BEL are more active on the SCDB. It seems UQMFers just don't like playing forum games. Such a pity Quote I may have to clean up my own plate a little bit and see what I can come up with. Thanx. I look forward to that! the more activity we have, the better it is! Title: Re: The Coming of Age OOC Post by: Lukipela on June 05, 2010, 05:09:17 pm the Mycon game has now started on the SCDB. Everyone is of course welcome to participate!
