Title: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: JHGuitarFreak on March 30, 2010, 12:23:10 pm It's been awhile so I can't quite recall.
Who has the licensing on these videos and why can't they be distributed? I know Activision technically could have the rights but I remember it being a different company. The reason I ask now is I have "converted" the main movies into the .avi format, simple task really. Set UQM to 640x480 resolution with OpenGL and use Fraps to capture. I was gonna plan on putting these up on youtube and stream them through the UQM-Mods site, but I have to know for sure that I won't run into any legalities. EDIT: On second thought I will upload them to youtube, if anything happens either I or youtube can take them down. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: Draxas on March 30, 2010, 07:54:51 pm I think it was Crystal Dynamics who owned the rights, if I recall correctly. No idea what those guys are up to now.

I suggest just putting them up, it's a shame that no one can see them anywhere :). Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: JHGuitarFreak on March 30, 2010, 08:20:02 pm well here they are in all their low-res glory:
Intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AMw89H-Yjs Ending: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPpYAUmNzY8 3DO Commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjZXaKddoqw I think later down the line I'll "convert" the Ship Descriptions. You think I should do them by individually, Hierarchy/Alliance or all in one? EDIT: What's awesome about the 3DO is most of its movies are in the Duk format save for a few I can't even begin to guess. Also the same with the streaming audio being mostly in AIFFC or AIFF. Also I re-found out who made the movies, but since their site isn't up at the moment: http://web.archive.org/web/20050320115157/www.pcagraphics.com/starcon.htm Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: ziper1221 on March 30, 2010, 08:40:02 pm I cant think of who, but someone has the scene from 2:03 in the intro as their avatar...
I don't like the way the narrator says Or-Quan. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: Alvarin on March 30, 2010, 09:33:19 pm I actually didn't like it that much...
The intro compares much better than the ending... I was expecting much more. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? I believe that "who is" is DEFIANT. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJYxh7FU3s4 ziper1221, you should get a kick out of the "Or-Quan" Dreadnought. EDIT: Also, in the description I have the time placement of each race that you can click on so you can skip to the ones you want to see. I stumbled upon that site "PCA Graphics" when it it used to be still up at the beginning of this project. And yes my avatar is from that site specifically. I also us the Mark II as my avatar at PONAF site. So no STEALING!! **just kidding** :P Man that seems like ages ago. Good find by the way, when it went down a felt a little sadness because I knew new fans would miss out. Good to see it was archived. For those that want em, I uploaded the duk files here: http://rapidshare.com/files/289509261/3dovideo.7z Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? By the way, if anybody is interested, I also got my hands on the Japanese localized copy of Star Control 2 ;D The voices, well my opinion, are even worse. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: JHGuitarFreak on April 01, 2010, 12:58:55 am I don't remember, that's why I asked.
Just in case. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: Novus on April 01, 2010, 09:10:58 am Didn't Zarla already upload those voices? Zarla did upload a few videos to YouTube, but I don't remember seeing the full voice data.Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: JHGuitarFreak on April 01, 2010, 09:50:17 pm Would you guys be interested in the full voice data?
I can easily convert it and upload it for you. EDIT: I uploaded the Japanese comm files to my sourceforge project page. https://sourceforge.net/projects/uqm-mods/files/ updated the upload to change the filename and also change all the files/directories into lowercase. EDIT: My favorite voice remains the same even in the Japanese localization: The Kohr-Ah Title: Japanese speech Post by: Novus on April 03, 2010, 06:08:42 pm I uploaded the Japanese comm files to my sourceforge project page. I don't speak Japanese, but it's kind of fun to try out the Japanese version. The file names seem to match the names in UQM 0.6.2 (they've changed in SVN), so the ZIP file works nicely as an add-on.https://sourceforge.net/projects/uqm-mods/files/ updated the upload to change the filename and also change all the files/directories into lowercase. Unfortunately, UQM gets a bit confused when the subtitle timings don't match and starts repeating speech. Proper timestamp files would probably fix this. It might be a good idea to have these in a separate ZIP so you don't have to update hundreds of megabytes of audio data for every timestamp fix. This would require someone to listen through the the Japanese voice files and mark where each line of the subtitles starts (which requires knowledge of both Japanese and English). Luckily, as long as the the lines in the subtitle sets for each language match each other one to one, we only need one set of timestamps for each voice package even if you want to mix and match speech and text languages. BTW, has anyone managed to find a transcription or script for the Japanese speech? Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again? Post by: Mormont on April 03, 2010, 07:19:12 pm Honestly, I prefer the PC version ending/intro. It just fits more with the way the rest of the game looks.

It just fits more with the way the rest of the game looks. I guess it depends on which version you grew up with or was introduced to. Myself it was the 3DO version and at that time I had a computer which would refuse to play SC2 because the computer was kept up to date. Tried to get it working but no dice no matter which route I took. And the only reason I tried to get it working was because my CD got scratched. That was my only issue with the 3DO, just a tiny little scratch would throw that thing into disarray. Title: Re: What was the issue behind the 3DO Intro/Ending videos again?
