Title: why isn't it labeled v1 ?
Post by: taltamir on May 31, 2010, 12:10:05 pm
The Ur Quan Masters is a complete game, AFAIK it has no bugs, it works, all the content is there... it is as complete as you can get.

Granted you could improve the graphics and such, but that is more of a v2 goal rather then v1. As long as it remains as v0.X people will think it is in alpha stage, an incomplete game (and thus, not playable as a "game")

Well the codebase is still riddled with decades old hacks.

alright, so it has some bugs... i guess beta would be more appropriate then.
it might have dirty hacks but they work overall. You can play it from begining to end without seeing a single bug (I have), which is much more then you can say for most v1 game releases (which are not even playable from begining to end due to 100% reproduce-able show stopper bug... and when that is fixed are riddled with bugs that you see often).

One of the more ugly bugs happens when you run away; if you warp out just as an enemy warps in, the battle doesn't end, and you're left with an enemy AI ship just kind of sitting there endlessly. It's quite annoying if you haven't saved in a while.

I'm not sure if it's a bug, but the Arilou refuse to talk to you once you have the Portal Spawner. Really annoying, since there's a lot of information they're supposed to tell you.

They shouldn't refuse, you did something to make them refuse.

Yeah, the option to say "I think it would be best if I killed you now" has priority over "goodbye Arilou friends". I think this might have been done on purpose, considering the voice and word choice of Arilou's response to the latter ("Goodbye, clever child").

I've encountered some more conversation-related bugs when I played through last week.... from memory:

- some of the later Pkunk encounters had the conversations completely mixed up - their replies weren't matched with my statements at all.
- a Pkunk captain stated that 4 ships were waiting for me at their homeworld, but going there, I got nothing (just another mixed-up convo).  Or this might have been simply a result of the above problem.
- running out of fuel in hyperspace, the Melnorme never greeted me with the snide remarks they reserve for that situation.... just one of their usual salutations.
- the Sa-Matra guardians spoke to me just like any random Ur-Quan vessel would - rather than the specialized "you may not approach" etc.
- not sure about this one, but certain player statements when talking to the Ur-Quan (which were supposed to open up more conversation branches) just didn't show up.

Haven't done a search on bugzilla yet to see if any of this has been reported, but I might still have savegames to reproduce.

They only use their 'sales pitch' if you don't have the means to buy fuel normally.
