Title: Remix Pack 4: An Unofficial Release
Post by: Insidious611 on June 09, 2010, 10:01:43 pm
Lets face it, nobody has heard from these guys as far as I can tell in the last 3 years. They had 2 songs left to do. My philosophy is to leave them undone if they're truly that hard to remix. As such, I've done what I'm sure many others have done and what the earlier thread about remix pack 4 sort-of hints at doing (and certainly helped me in doing), I've created an unofficial 4th remix pack with all of the non-bonus-track files released singularly in that thread. If I'm missing anything, please point it out! Thanks!

Note: Simply place this in the same folder as the other 3 packs.

PS: Apologies for the untidy URL, our DNS server is currently down.

2 songs left to do?  I know they were missing Syreen, what else did I forget?

Anyway yeah, I've done this already myself.  I went and found a Syreen remix from somewhere else (by TheMisterCat IIRC) and put that in with all the other race music that had accumulated at the bottom of the Precursors page.

I really would have liked to see them finish that project, and I agree it's a damn shame they stopped so close to completion.  Hopefully there was a good reason other than just "we got bored."

Yehat was the other song they had yet to do.

Nope, they did Yehat (http://www.medievalfuture.com/precursors/remix.php?remix=48), but the intro and outro have yet to be done, as well as Syreen, see this thread (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4677.0).

Actually it's only the intro and syreen tracks that are missing.

Actually it's only the intro and syreen tracks that are missing.

The problem with the intro is that in order to create a viable ingame remix, it has to be exactly the length of the original intro, because it and the texzt along it runs for a fixed time.
The Syreen remix should pose no such problem :). I wonder if anyone has done a syreen song remix?

You can edit the timing of the slides and text to compensate; last time I checked, it was in an easily modifiable text file.

As previously discussed (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4734.0), there's a perfectly good Syreen remix that hasn't been released because Jouni isn't happy with it.

Mmm then It'd be an even better idea to make an animated video from the intro with the music playing in the background :D.
But in the meanwhile, there's a great orchestral remix by Pablo Luna floating around. I wonder if it can be amended to be fixed to the UQM intro?

that sucks.. but maybe someone else will want to step up?

Time for some AWAKENING OF THE COTTON ZOMBIES!!!!! [/bad joke]

All kidding aside, does anyone else think it would be a good idea to throw this up with the three official remix packs on Sourceforge as "UQM Remix Pack 4 (Unofficial partial release)" or something? It's not looking like the official pack is coming out any time soon, and if it does, the official ones could still be put in.

With that in mind, I just noticed that the link in the first post is dead, so here's a new one:

Is there a RMP file for those of us using builds of UQM?

Every time I see threads like these I feel bad about not finishing the project (yet). It wasn't a good idea for us to save some of the hardest remixes for last, namely the intro and outro. Unlike the other remixes where we had a lot of freedom to do things the way we liked, these two tracks require careful timing for them to work properly in their intended setting. It's not for lack of trying either. I think I've made three different attempts at the intro track, but I haven't nailed it nor finished it. It doesn't help that I'm currently a bit out of practice, so I can't just whip up something quickly either.

My concept for these two remixes is to make them epic and orchestral, but it's a lot of work, and I haven't got a lot of time.

Regarding the Syreen remix, I don't know what to do there. I'm pretty deflated by the fact that Mark Vera's remix was so good yet he didn't want to release it, nor did he finish his supposedly improved version. I just don't feel like I could do a better job with it.

I'm all for kicking some life back into this project and actually finishing it, but the last few steps are difficult, to say the least.

Btw: There's an additional challenge with the outro: I can't test it within the game without beating the Sa-Matra every time. Is there some way the ending could be played without having to go through that process? Some kind of cheat or hack, maybe?

Turning on cyborg mode skips the Sa-Matra battle, I think.

If it's all you need to finish the outro remix, I can compile for you an executable that plays the ending in place of the introduction.

Edit : actually I don't think you need a new executable at all, just redefine the resource map for cinematics like you would redefine it for music :
slides.intro = STRTAB:base/cutscene/ending/ending.txt

It should work if you're running one of the most recent versions of UQM.

And I concur with Novus' previous statement : slide timing is not hard to change, and it's obviously timing which should comply to music, not the other way around.
That can be achieved the same way I guess, with something along the lines of :
slides.ending = STRTAB:addons/remix/cutscene/ending/ending.txt
slides.intro = STRTAB:addons/remix/cutscene/intro/intro.txt

Most of the cutscene directory has to be copied from the original ones into the proper directories and modified since it defines not only music synchronization but also which track is played.

You'll also have to change
Code:
#(Play music)
MUSIC base/cutscene/intro/introx.mod

to
Code:
#(Play music)
MUSIC addons/remix/cutscene/intro/introx.mod
and so on.

Well I suppose the artist has a right to control his own creations.  I personally would love to hear the version he had completed already.  Then again, I'm standing in a position of "anything is better than nothing" right now.

The issue with that is that, unless the user wants to flip the timing back and forth, your timing will be all screwed up if you change settings back to the mod music. That doesn't really sound ideal.

Huh? If and only if you are using the remixed music, use the corresponding updated slide timing. The new content management system has been designed with this sort of thing in mind, and even the old one should cope. Just override both in the same add-on package.

Guys, it doesn't matter! If I can't time my music to an animation, I really shouldn't be remixing music for UQM in the first place. ;)

This thread has inspired me somewhat. I might even sit down and try to make something soon, but I'm going to have to build videos of the intro and outro first to do frame by frame comparisons within my sequencer. That's the part that's holding me back right now. The frustrating thing with making music above tracker level is all the technical stuff you have to go through when all you really want to do is arrange your harmonies and melodies. :)

You could just record the slideshows using e.g. Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/).

...or, you could pick one that's free, like CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/) (which is open source) or Hyparcam 2 (http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/index.asp) (which became free after Hypercam 3 came out).

So, does anyone have a savegame from right before you fight the Sa-Matra so I can record the outro? I assume the earlier statement about the battle being skipped in Cyborg mode is correct, considering I'm a bit out of practice? ;)

There (http://www.stack.nl/~svdb/sc2/starcon2.07) you are.
And yes.
And looking forward to the result. Who knows, maybe remix pack 4 will actually turn out to be ready before 0.7.0. :P

Oh man, please don't use Youtube to listen to the remixes! The versions there aren't sanctioned by us and aren't at their full audio quality. Instead I recommend that you go to precursors.medievalfuture.com (http://precursors.medievalfuture.com) and listen to them from there.

Sooooo.
I finally got around to downloading and installing UQM 0.7.0.  I have all the music files in mp3 form, but I don't have a remix pack for "number 4."  (ie: everything outside the existing 3 packs that I was happy to see installed themselves as part of the process.)

Unfortunately, the pack linked in the OP doesn't appear to be working anymore.  does anyone have a copy of it they could pitch my way? =)
Better yet, could someone tell me how to make my own (I'd like to include MrCat's Syreen's remix to complete the deal.)

Here you have one that does work on 0.7:
http://uqm.starsite.com.ar/aremixd4.zip (http://uqm.starsite.com.ar/aremixd4.zip)

Place it in /The Ur-Quan Masters/content/addons. Then right click/Properties the uqm shortcut and add the command line --addon aremixd4

Awesome, thanks. =)
Also, kudos for throwing the Syreen remix in there, very nice =)

If anyone has pointers on how to make my own remix pack, I'd still appreciate it, even if just for the sake of learning something new.  I'm assuming its more complicated than just converting all the files to ogg vorbis and packing them up somehow.  I renamed the .uqm file .rar and opened it up, but there were a couple odd files I wasn't sure how to recreate.

Thanks for the interest! I've got my own website with non-UQM music at tilt.medievalfuture.com (http://tilt.medievalfuture.com). VOiD has a music page at Trax in Space (http://www.traxinspace.com/profile/void) (and so do I (http://www.traxinspace.com/profile/tilt), for that sake). There should be plenty of music in both locations.

You're welcome!

It's not that complicated to do an addon pack. Just take as example the one I provided, you must do the same only that you modify the rmp file so that it directs to the files you're replacing.

Woops, I've just realized that  the .rmp has some errors (uploaded the remix in which I was doing testin to figure out how it worked). So now I'm reuploading the .zip file which hopefully will work fine.

So if any had downloaded the file, download it again!

I don't think you need to as long as you remember to include the command line parameter he mentioned above.  I haven't played with it to see if renaming the file would make it get loaded automatically or anything, though.
