Title: Random Rambelings and questions of a newbie.
Post by: Kerr on June 27, 2010, 05:44:17 pm
 :D

So does anyone here think there will ever be a sequel to Star Control 2 that isn't crappy? (lol, SC3 copied so much text!)

Because from what i can read it isn't likely...

Another question, Would a game that is fun like star control 1/2 have to actually be a continuation of the starcon universe, or could it be different game entirely? (With The Starcon level of depth & fun in the ways it was)

one last thing, as a rough first attempt(2 hours), how is this model

You have an... interesting way of dealing with new people. If that post counts as trolling to you...

I have two words to say: "Encyclopedia Dramatica". THAT is trolling. Kerr's post... well, I guess you could classify him as annoying or spamming, but he is definitely not trolling. I see no attempt to evoke an emotional response, which is usually what trolls try to do. In fact, I'd say that you are the one being a troll here, if anyone is.

There's a freaking 5000 x 5000 image right there and you don't see a problem with it? Get yourself some standards.

it's 5000X5000 you you can get a close look lol...

do NOT open that with windows picture and fax viewer, it will not go well.

Shiver, what the heck is wrong with you? It's a big image, in a spoiler tag. Was it not initially spoiler tagged? I don't see a modification note or moderator message.

Kerr... I'm really sorry. Welcome to UQM forums.

You know what, never mind. I forgot how protective Star Control's forums are of its rampaging trolls. Silly me for wandering back in thinking there was still something worth returning for.

Avoiding the issue of whether or not Kerr is a troll:

In SC, the cruiser's nacelles go down not up. This is Star CONTROL not Star TREK.

I couldn't change the zoom, but whatever.
For the model itself - first it is quite different from the in-game "specifications" here - http://star-control.com/sc2/ships.php# -->Cruiser
Next - the ammunition. I didn't really liked the way they stick out from under tha saucer, it makes the whole ship in danger of exploding on one enemie's lucky shot to the warhead. I liked the vent-ports on the nacelles, but think the ones that look like turrets on the sides would look better like the ones on the top and the bottom, the diagonals.

Where was that pic in the game?

I used the pics from melee...  ???

i'll redo the bridge entirely later probably, and the nacelles can be changed in 30 seconds...

I cant tell much from a fixed top down melee pic lol...

Why is everyone so touchy  ::)

And, yes i know how to use the

tag, in fact, some forum admins will get mad at you  for posting pics without spoilers. (if they skew the forum table)

People take me too seriously .

HOLY ****! Shiver deleted his account! :o ???

He's been here for fully 7 years! And he ended it because he feels that this new user is a... troll?!

I don't even know what emoticon to use! None of them would properly represent the shock of seeing that Shiver has deleted his account so swiftly and without warning, for no particularly good reason. This is... My eyes are going to fall out of my head!! O_O

EDIT: OK, now that I've recovered from that shock...

That image is from some form of in-game database (I don't know what it's called) in Star Control (not SC2, just Star Control, i.e. SC1). They don't exist anywhere in SC2. But, if you look closely on the SC2 title screen, you can see an image of a Cruiser moving away from you (it's hard to see in UQM because it's behind the menu, but you can still see it). Hope that helps.

He Deleted his account?

wow... uhh....

Wait, why would he think of me as a troll?

I thought he was calling himself a troll and joking around
Ha ha hey look guys, I'm TROLLING the FORUM, did you see what I did there?!

Get out.

 :-X

It took a day to somehow upset someone enough to make them leave... That's a new record, right?

and what could have possibly been in my message that was trollish?

Quote
Kerr's post... well, I guess you could classify him as annoying or spamming, but he is definitely not trolling.
huh?

Ok i'm completely confused now...  ???

EDIT:

This game is older than I am. Amazing.  ::)

Kerr, at reply#10 in this post I gave a link to ship data screens. It is a flash page that defaults to Androsynth and has navigation links on the left. Choose the Earthling Cruiser for top and side views.

As to Shiver... Well, he always had some behavioral issues and in fact is the main reason I don't go to the online mellee...

Title: Re: Random Rambelings and questions of a newbie.
Post by: Kerr on June 27, 2010, 11:46:57 pm
i went to it and saw, *facepalm* that's whjy i asked where it came from as they werent with the game or manual...  ???

All i had to go by was watching melee in star control 2

so the center thing was supposed to be point defense lasers, the thing on the bottom of the bridge was supposed to be the fire control deck, and on top the Bridge.

The missiles are meh, and i was planning on redoing the bridge... but...

uhh, the that pic 's bridge looks so much different than the pin in melee...

Look at the image. Read his post history. Actually read it, do not skim.

I read every word of every post of his in chronological order before I commented the first time. He is eager, perhaps to a fault, but he is NOT a troll. Troll has a specific meaning. He does not fit it.

And one would think that the person who started this (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4650.0) would be glad for any protectiveness towards trolls that we have.

ETA: ... oh, you flounced. Congratulations.

well then, would anyone like fancy 3d models of the SC2 planets?

& noobody would happen to have a mass agglomeration of all the SC2 planet textures, would they? :p

the SC2 planets are created in a more complicated way ;). fault formation, height maps and color maps :D
effectively meaning that all the thousands of planets in SC2 have a different texture.

I once created such a random planet texture generator, using the actual SC2 colormaps and height translation maps.
You can download it here, and work from there: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Y5YFX4HL (the flash files you want to run are in the 'bin' directory')
If you want bigger or different textures or a way to save the txtures other than using a printscreen, you need to learn as3 and work with the source files which I also provided ;).

Here's a quick screenshot of the program in action:
top left is the height map, top right are the possible color translations in 3 color indexes (they are chosen based on the planet's temperature, but only differen with certain color maps (water and metal if i'm not mistaken)
bottom left the actual planet's surface.

Post by: Kerr on June 29, 2010, 02:28:38 am
that's pretty cool  :)

I made the textures of those planets using GIMP's plasma render, desaturate, colorize, and then made a bump map.

the ship is that pic was just something random.

(This is my first try at making planets lol)

EDIT:
This is my second.
(No Star Background)

EDIT:
That is a SC2 planet's textures. (Kudos if oyu know which planet)

*hint* that is the planet's class 8 atmosphere you see.

Consider trying lossless .png

Is it anything to do with that clone of yours?

Yes, that's the reason I created it. I needed a way to display the SC2 universe, including its planets, outside of UQM ;).

bahh i could have used lossless JPEG too, like the full image. lol.

i usually avoid png, i thoguht the file sized were bigger... ill take a look though thx

JPEG is NEVER lossless. It has a specific method of compression that involves taking all your carefully-positioned pixels and WIPING A DAMP RAG ALL OVER THEM.

surprisingly, there is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossless_JPEG
I dont know what idiot decided to take the standard for lossy compression and add lossless on the front.

Kerr, welcome here!  The only thing I have to say about the original ship pictures is... it looks really cool but I can't realy see the whole thing even after zooming out quite a bit.  Is it possible for you to size the ship pics down?  Its no big deal I get the idea.
I made the textures of those planets using GIMP's plasma render, desaturate, colorize, and then made a bump map.
Let me get this straight, did you use GIMP to make this?  Wow, I haven't made a single thing in GIMP.

Angelfish, that random planet generator thingie seems pretty neat.
