Title: A come back, and a question.
Post by: Sargon on July 13, 2010, 05:09:10 am
Hello All,

I have visited this place a really long time ago. I even played SC2 with somone online, he beat my mycon ship pretty easily.

I have completed an indie game called "Labyrinthica: The quest of Lima", it's a commercial fantasy action game(no space ships involved) and I wonder if you would like to see it. I am also working on a new game called "Wonder" which might be free, though I am not sure about it.

Please tell me if I can post here about my games, and if not that's fine.

I think promoting commercial products is frowned upon within this community.

Same idea here. Concidering it's not StarControl related.

I'd like to see it if you made it yourself :). I'm interested in what SC fans program in their free time / job ;).

Seeing as you already brought the matter up, you might as well provide a link and save everyone the trouble of googling it. I think you've got enough people interested to justify a Café thread.

Ok, sorry for causing a bit of a comoshion about this.
My commercial game "Labyrinthica: The quest of Lima" youtube is at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sg-PXf4nT4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sg-PXf4nT4)

The website URL is at: http://www.pompipompi.net/ (http://www.pompipompi.net/)

The other new game I am working on is called Wonder. I leaning torward making it a free game, or at least some part of the game to be free.
It is going to be an RPG game with single and multiplayer modes. You will be able to create worlds with a tool, much like RPGMaker. On one hand it won't be as dynamic as RPGMaker, but it will have a very specific good and simple gameplay to it.

The youtube for this game is at:

Thanks,
If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them.
And I am always happy to hear what people think(there is also a demo for Labyritnihca at the website)

Being a sorta mod here I really don't see the hram in this since you've been here before and participated. It'd be different if you were a fresh new guy advertising in his first post. So unless meep-eep overrules me or whatever, feel free to talk about your game. :)

Yup, no hram done. XD

Hehe, curse my thick sausage fingers.

Anyway, if your working on more indie games, why not make an SC themed or inspired one? You'd have the uncounted hordes of sc fans lining up for it.

Well, you will be able to create custom worlds in Wonder. So basically you could create a SC themed RPG.
The battles would still be RPG like, unlike the battles in SC. But all the art work and settings could be in space.
One of the reasons I chose this type of game is because I wanted to restrain the scope of the game. I have a full time job, so I don't have much time to work on it.

What programming language do you use if you don't mind me asking?

I use C++ for Labyrinthica, and also wonder.
I am likely to write a Silverlight client for Wonder, so it will be possible to run on a web browser. It also means Mac will be able to run the client, because Mac support Silverlight.
So it's mainly C++.
I didn't use a scripting language to do all the logic and AI in labyrinthica, which might have been a mistake.

A Star Control themed RPG would be nice!

What are the game mechanics like? That's one thing I'm highly interested in...

Game mechanics are kind of a "real time Rogue like". In the time is divided to steps or turns, and each turn everyone are making one step simultanously.
The difference from most rogue game is that the steps don't wait for the player to make his move. Instead they have a short period of time of less than a second.
I did this because the game supports multiplayer, and you can't have everyone wait for everyone to make a move in multiplayer. I will probably also add a "Rogue mode" that will be more like rogue for single player games.
The battle mechanics are pretty simple. You need to be in war with a creature, and then if you stand next to him you will attack him every turn automatically. There is also a matter of flanking and if you stand next to more than one creature you can choose which one to attack.
The war and peace mechanics are interesting. It's mostly interesting in the multiplayer perspective. There are 3 general states, and 2 specific states. The general states are Peace, Guard and War.
Peace means you never ever attack anyone. Guard means you only attack those who attack you. And war means you attack everyone.
Guard and war states can be overriden by the specific state. A specific state is directed at a single player or creature, and can be either war or peace. The default is war.
If the specific state is war, then the general states remain the same. If the specific state is peace, then you will never attack that specific creature\player no matter what is your general state.
There will also be magic attacks. Like fireballs, sleep, and lighning. Still, all close range. I am also considering making long range weapons, but for now I will try to do without it.

I also have thoughts of making terrains affect your movement, but those are the basics. I might change them in the future. Of course there are going also to be items and equipment.
The game can take into all kind of directions, currently I am leaning torward calssic RPG like. But it can also turn to be ultima online like, or Dwarf Fortress like. It is possible I will just support all these directions eventualy.
