Title: revitalizing the forum
Post by: ziper1221 on August 13, 2010, 05:52:08 am
on the scbd luki noted that he would hate to see this forum die. Any thoughts on how to keep it from biting the dust?

A lack of activity can be greatly offset by becoming more active. Therefore, I'd suggest posting more often. Other than that, I'm not certain what you mean by "biting the dust". This forum does not seem to be in any imminent danger to me.

I don't think it'll die ;). Besides, I don't post over there anymore, so you're more inclined to see more posts of me here :)

This forum is in no danger of dying out until the UQM team cancels any further updates to the project and disbands. Therefore, I'd say we're in pretty good shape, seeing as how that's not particularly likely to happen.

It should be mentioned that this was in relation to the old "Is the SCDB dying?" threads we used to have, which also cropped up even though the forum was in no danger of actually dying. I don't think this place is going to disappear, but it is a lot slower than it used to be.

Exactly. A lot of people seem to just read and follow threads without ever posting. And then they wonder why the forum is so slow.

Yeah, and once there is a new release from the team I expect this place will perk right back up.

The politics thread! (unless it tears the whole community apart)

Doesn't show any signs of that so far.

'kay. We've had a record winter and a record summer up here in Finland. Except for some trombs the weather has been awesome, better than in the last 20 years. thus, I posit that Global Warming is good for Finland and to hell with the rest of you. Were the number one country in the world anyway (according to newsweek) so it's only fair that we reap the benefits of this lovely phenomenon.

That's an added bonus for us. Serves them right for invading us some 70 years ago. I guess revenge is sometimes a dish best served hot!

Wow, you care about praise from a magazine that recenly was completely sold off for the lofty sum of $1?

We're Finns. We take our victories where we can get them. Don't ruin this for me.  :'(

It has a lot of readers, though. Bad business decisions aside, what they write usually means something.

It's also probably the most liberal media operation attempting to present itself as unbiased currently (at least in the US, that I'm aware of). As we all know, partisanship in the news sells, because people want to read / listen to things they agree with.

Stop trivialising it! >:( This is serious. You may be looking forward to regularly frolicking in sun-bathed meadows, but some of us who live just a hundred metres inland have waterfront views in prospect, doubling our house prices overnight!

Were the number one country in the world anyway (according to newsweek) so it's only fair that we reap the benefits of this lovely phenomenon.
Per capita, you're probably the best country for star control, rivalled only by the Dutch perhaps.

There is nothing serious about something that no one can even prove exists. It's all just a bunch of hyperbole.

No, not really. All you've really got as proof are a collection of so-called scientists digging around the polar ice caps and screaming "The ice is melting! Help!!!!".

No... that isn't it at all. The proof is that the global average temperature is increasing much higher than it has been for millions of years. Not incidentally, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased along with it. I think that, just before my last departure (and just before the huge GCC debate that I missed most of :(), I mentioned the video series, How It All Ends, to someone here. It's a great video series on the subject that was made about 3 years ago. Here, I'll link you to it:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=92EE5DBE2987982F (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=92EE5DBE2987982F)

Start with How It All Ends, then How It All Ends: Index and/or How It All Ends: Menu.

Side note: YouTube made it a serious PAIN to find a link to that playlist. In fact, I only found it because it turns out that the user posted a link to it in the first video's description. WTF is wrong with you, Google?! >_>

That same guy has also since written a book which is similar to the How It All Ends series, and since it is newer, it is probably better and more organized.

Yes. Common sense say's that you err on the side of caution. Even if global warming wasn't true(contrary to the majority of scientists and satelite data) wouldn't it be better to get away from fossil fuels and decrease our carbon footprint anyway? Besides, I'm tired of reading about coal mine collapses, mountain top removal, oil spills and tap water that lights on fire. Those should be reason enough alone.

This is the 21st century not the 19th. We have the technology, lets use it.

I hope you're the only one who failed to notice the sarcasm in my last post. Notice how I was looking forward to sea level rise? I was trying to keep things moving in a far more whimsical direction than they've now taken, but by all means persist and watch as my estimation of your intelligence decays exponentially.

EDIT: Whoops, this could be taken the wrong way. I'm mostly just saying I don't esteem skeptics of the established science on this topic highly, to put it mildly.

Oh no, here we go again... Take2 of the Global Warming thread...
Oh yeah, no-one ever posted about all the investigations of that leaked email thing turning up nothing at all. I haven't checked, but I assume all the vapid retards skeptics who were crowing about it haven't shut up.

It won't matter if we plant enough trees. So get to work!  :P
Or if we cull enough humans. So get to work! :P

I think you mean house values. Or don't you own your own home? In that case, capitalistically speaking, you don't deserve a home because you haven't accrued enough worth.  Besides, you can hardly see stars from the seafront, shouldn't you bee in the mountains somewhere? ;)

Hey Zeratul! I thought you left the forum. We're missing you in the other thread, please come back and reply.

Hey Zeratul! I thought you left the forum.
Let's just say the occurrence of my leaving the forum is about as likely as the Ur-Quan are to become Supox-hugging hippies, donate the Sa-Matra to charity, and abandon the Path of Now and Forever.

I might, later, depending on how constructive I perceive the discussion to be. I will definitely need to see some diversity in opinions, though.

Either is ambiguous. My mistake.

Far side of the moon, more like. That way I can stop watching out for global warming and start worrying about being squashed by the next meteorite.

Why do you need other people to share their opinions in order to defend yours?

Why do you need other people to share their opinions in order to defend yours?

Ummm... Morale..? What can I say, I can get discouraged if I'm "debating" with a mountain of people whose stances on the matter are all opposite to mine. It's something psychological, I suspect. At that point, I lose my will to continue.  ::)
If it was just myself versus one other person, that'd be fine, but I felt quite overwhelmed by the opposition.

So if you feel your stance on an issue is correct, but you're in the minority, then you can't discuss it?  It looks like if you had a good arguement, it wouldn't matter how many people opposed it, it'd still be a good arguement.    Is your morale low because the other side's argument doesn't make any sense and is frustrating you, or because it's a good one?

As far as I'm concerned, it's a debate as long as both sides are presenting valid arguements and counterpoints and such, and stops being a debate when it degenerates to personal attacks.  It didn't really seem like either side was getting personally attacked at all.  Why do you feel the need to put "debating" in quotes?

Dogpiling is still bad form. Perhaps if we were to clear out an arena where there were a limited number of participants... I remember an experiment of doing that on the Sluggy Freelance boards several years ago. The debates were a modest success, but it stopped because the others felt excluded.

I mostly agree with what he's saying, but (as I suspect is the case for a lot of other people) am not about to get involved in a political discussion, in my experience it never ends well.

How active was the forum two years ago?  I'm curious because I wasn't really noticing the slow "traffic" (since I wasn't here two years ago)

Global warming...I don't want to talk about it.  The pattern seems to be:  Someone talks about global warming, someone talks against it, (someone starts joking about it) someone posts 2 or 3 links about "data", the other argues about the data, the one talks about how stupid the one is, and then the other talks about how unintelligent the OTHER was.... :-\

Bout the same, i suppose.  seems like less topics are being posted in, but the few that are are moving faster.  Well, probably the slightest bit slower, overall.  It's to be expected though.
