Title: My Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah Artwork
Post by: dczanik on September 21, 2010, 08:16:56 pm
Greetings Hunams!

I'm one of the artists on Project 6014 and have been working really hard for you guys.  Been a fan of Star Control II and UQM since they came out.  One of the things I've always wanted is a High Definition, modern looking version of the game I love so much.  But, nobody has ever done it!   Well, now that I've gotten a chance to look at the code, I have to say, I'm amazed at how much art there is.  I've started a side project not related to project 6014, where I'm creating an HD version of the game.  But, it's a lot of work so I could always use help. Somebody asked for non-spoiler pics for a countdown clock, so I put Project 6014's name on it.

Thanks! Just got the okay from Cedric. Assuming you're the same Lukipela as star-control.com, some actual artwork of mine from project 6014, should be heading your way. Love that site btw!

Minor Nitpick: The bone pit seems to be filled with (mostly) bones from just one race. Wouldn't it be more realistic to have a huge variety in there?

Excellent piece though, would really work well in some high-res mod or something.

Ofcourse not. This Kohr-Ah has been assigned to human space since its assignment. So it's only logical that there are only human bones there :).
(in other words, stop nitpicking)

also looks like there is an elephant's bones/ skull (Ganesha?)

No. There's not just human bones there!  There's Syreen bones, Arilou bones, and Androysynth bones there too!  ;D

The 'Elephant' skull is actually modeled after a Pachycephalosaurus after looking for a Pteranodon to use as reference since the Yehat look to be modeled after a Pteranodon. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pachycephalosaurus_RoyalOntarioMuseum.png (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pachycephalosaurus_RoyalOntarioMuseum.png).  Interesting side note, Elephant skulls were often mistaken for a giant human skull with a single eye.  This is more than likely the origin of the Cyclops.  Ancient people came across an Elephant skull, mistook the nasal cavity for an eye socket, and believed that giant 1-eyed monsters roamed the area.

Most of those bones are from old anatomy paintings I did. So they are human bones. I just wanted to get something out to you guys while tidying up some of the mod's artwork. I'll add some more alien bones. The windows are also woefully uneven. You want just random alien looking bones, or would you rather have something like Vux, Pkunk, etc. in there? If you look at the original's bone pile, there's a lot (if not all) humanoid bones in there.  The original's resolution is just so low it's a little hard to make out. My painting was to show how much more detail you can fit in, and the fact people are analyzing the bones just drives the point home for me.

The bones are supposed to be from species personally exterminated by current Kohr-Ah, so none of the listed qualify.

So... you know that kohr-ah? :D

Seeing as how none of those 4 species were wiped out (except maybe the Androsynth, but that wasn't by Kohr-Ah), we don't need to know that particular Kohr-Ah. However, given that dczanik rattled off 4 similarly structured humanoid races (and even forgot the Utwig and Druuge to boot), I think it's fair to say that having bunches of humanoid bones in there isn't too much of a stretch.

Ah. I never knew that. Where is that said?

My trophy bone-pit.
In here is one skeleton from each of the races which I personally exterminated.
I fondle these bones and recall the fine cleansing.
Perhaps your bones will grace this pit momentarily
unless they are accidentally vaporized.

Oh lay off it guys. They're obviously the remnants of exterminated intelligent species that happen to share some superficial similarities with certain animals on Earth. Even a cursory examination of the bones reveals that to someone with a scientific degree such as myself.

lol@Lukipela.

Okay.  Random alien looking species it is! Damn, I got 'schooled'. I didn't even remember him talking about the type of species in the bone pit.  <<loads up the game again>>  Generally when I play, I tend to stay away from the Ur-Quan whenever I can.  I really hate losing crew (Am I the only one?) so despite my love for Melee, I generally avoid any challenging fights.

Remember the power of the Spathi if you must deal with the Kohr-Ah. On another note, I'm getting pretty excited about project 6014.

Thou art not alone. But, a fully-powered flagship can steamroll through Ur-Quan and Kohr-Ah ships. You don't even need a whole lot of crew; just a point-defense, one crew pod, a Hellbore in the second slot, some tracking modules, and full Dynamos/Shiva Furnaces. Of course, Commander Hayes disagrees, saying that you need "more weaponry", but more weapons just puts a drain on your batteries. Hayes says a lot of crazy things; he suggests 2 point-defense units, 200 crew (!), and a whole mess of super-powerful weaponry, and STILL demands a storage bay and huge amounts of dynamo power! Jesus Crust, Hayes!! Who taught you how to prepare for combat?! ;)

You probably forget that he served on SHOFIXTI scout during the war.

I heard some rumours that Fwiffo landed on the "lost"shofixty planet and found his "Love of his life", I heard that Fwiffo currently is writing a  book, an Opera and a Rock song about  it.

Ok Rumours arent always true, but i hope this will be true!

That seems irrelevant, since his design choice seems to be more like the Ur-Quan: Load up a heavy battleship loaded in much more crew and guns than you need. ::)

Awesome artwork, doubly love it since the Kohr-Ah are my favorite of the races.  ;D

I thought I was the only one who horded the Spathi ships to take out Ur-Quan.  I used to wait in the Ur-Quan space, slaughter them for RU, and just head back when I got bored.  rarely lost a ship.  Never fired main attack either.

Wow, all your hd art is pretty amazing...

Wait...when you said someone asked for art for a countdown clock, did you mean me...?  Sorry I had no idea if it was me.

Eh. I wouldn't worry about it. I was just trying to help the community. But the countdown clock was a little scary.  I was worried that people's expectations would be too high, and they'd be really dissapointed .

You certainly didn't disappoint, but I wouldn't worry about that for future reference. Fans on the forum are so starved for a sequel that it will be hard to disappoint I think.

No, you did not disappoint at all!  In fact, I was entirely surprised at all the art and the dialogue etcetera... If you had a fourth of the new art, I personally would not have been disappointed.
