Title: A roleplaying game for SC
Post by: Alley_Cat on February 10, 2003, 07:08:16 pm
Ok. I think we all agree that SC2 is (for me at least) the game with the best plot and depth that was released ever. I mean, there is so much to read, so much to do, and it is such a reach world - 25 different races, each being different in behavior and way of life style, each having different ships with different abilities, each have many different relations with other species, each has it's own advantages and disadvantages...
This is such a rich world. And I wonder why (as far as I heard) there isn't any role-playing game designed for this huge world - there can be so many options, so many possibilities, and games such as Warcraft and Starcraft (that aren't as deep and wide in the plot and strategies and options such as Star control 2) already have such thing...
Why do you say? Should one be created? Would you be interested in participating in such a thing? :-)
Your thoughts are welcomed.

While an SC2 RPG would be a good idea, I think an SC2 MMORPG would be even better.  The ability to be any of the races, to interact with other people who are playing as different races in realtime, being able to fly through Hyperspace to different planets and such.  And you could even still go hunting for resources to pay for stuff (along with doing jobs I suppose), though if that's the cases, resources on uncolonized planets would need to replenish pretty quickly.

Two problems I can think of off the top of my head with that (not counting where to put it storyline-wise, though I'd suggest immediately after SC2 so exploration would be the big thing):

#1: Unless we have some mods that are permanently on planets, we'd have to have planets able to be colonized or lived on, and you can drop your ship down and walk around and talk to people there.  So you don't HAVE to fly around constantly, but you can.  Maybe this could be limited by the planets (minus Earth) not being an entire planet, but maybe just one big city with a few outposts or something.

#2: With the possibly many people that would be playing this, the standard "two ships + Hyperspace = dragged down to True Space" scenario would be fatally irritating.

www.starconrpg.com

:)

Edit: Before you get your hopes up, I should tell ya that there's not really any races available for playing... maybe one or two, I forget. I got lucky and got the Spathi.  :D

A problem with the online thing mentioned would not be meeting someone in hyperspace, but the Travel itself. Either it would be very slow (to be equal to that of those flying around systems), or those in the systems would watch in disbelief as the days flew by.... It's a pity, otherwise nothing would stop me from creating the grand empire of the FOT

I didn't get a thing from that online site, sorry. The site is just too scrambled for me and not being able to play with all species is a major mackdown.
My original thought was something like ADnD - a set of rules and ideas by which people can create world (meaning create life and things on existing worlds), create characters who do things and stuff and can be part of the huge world of SC2. An MMORPG of SC2 would be, IMO, one of the best things of this decade, but most cases are there won't be such a thing.
So... any ideas about such things? Maybe an interactive solution over the internet which would be orginized enough to be without limits and to match the whole potential of the SC2 universe?

Here's the problem...All of the races in SC have sort of a single, defining personality trait.  The reason why you get so attached to them is that they function, for the most part, as a single character.  The Chenjesu are all wise and benevolent, the VUX all violent and bigoted, the Spathi all cowardly...Rarely does a race show any variation within its personality structure.  The only examples I can think of are Admiral ZEX and the Yehat rebellion.  This makes it hard to play a character of a certain race, as if you have two Spathi in the party, they'd probably be identical.

In addition to this, there are a lot of things about the races society which we're better off not knowing.  I think part of the charm in the way the races talk to you is how little you know about them.  You never find out what Frungy really is.  Fwiffo's story about his childhood suggests that all Spathi grow up that way, but if that's the case, a society like that couldn't really sustain itself.

Some of the fabric of the universe falls apart if you look at it too closely, and some questions--questions which would have to be answered for role-playing purposes--were not meant to be answered.

Yeah, the site is kinda weird with it going sideways instead of up and down. But it's fun.
