Title: Expanding my collection (Star Control 2 PC vs 3DO version)
Post by: JudgeYohance on May 20, 2011, 06:36:12 am
Some collect trading cards, some collect rocks, I collect video games and video game systems.

And with that said the next system that I plan to have join my collection is a 3DO with a copy of Star Control 2 for it. I have been curious for a long time how it compare to the original PC version and ask you, for those who have played both, give some comparing and contrasting.

See Version comparison (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Version_Comparison) on the Ultronomicon (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Main_Page).

But how does the game feel in comparison (Use of the controller over the keyboard) , do you think it is better or worse then the original DOS game, can the 3DO CD be used as a weapon to kill those responsible for Star control 3, these are the questions I'd like to hear answers to :)

Thanks for the link though, interesting stuff

I cannot for the life of me figure out what the controls are by searching the internet, and I have never played it myself, but I believe two face buttons are used for weapons and a shoulder button is used for thrust (though I'm not sure where I heard that from, or if I just made it up). That's how I usually set up my controllers when playing UQM, and although it takes some getting used to at first, it's better than the keyboard since you don't have to worry about keyjamming (which can be a huge problem with same-machine multiplayer).

As onpon4 mentioned, controllers are less prone to key jamming, but you could use those in the DOS version already, so that's not really a difference.

The voices are probably the most noticeable change, and I think the game mostly benefits from them (a few are cringe-inducing, but there are a few great ones too). The fact that some of the dialogue is missing because they forgot to record it is quite an annoyance, though. The 3DO version lacks dialogue text, too, which I'd consider a major failure; I believe strongly that (at the very least) all plot-relevant dialogue should be subtitled.

The movies in the 3DO version are OK, but don't really add that much compared to the PC intro/ending. The remixed music is cool, although I'm surprised the QuasiSpace music was completely replaced.

The 3DO version has these annoying menus and pictograms to replace some of the text; this is only a good thing if your TV is too blurry for smallish text at 320x240.

According to Revolution X (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RevolutionX), CDs are an effective weapon against the uncool, but apparently that's because "Music is the Weapon!" which would suggest that Aerosmith CDs would be more effective. If you want to perform an additional service to mankind, I'd recommend using AOL CDs.

The general consensus in #uqm-arena is that using anything other than a keyboard is a handicap in most cases. That might have more to do with long practice on the keyboard than anything else, and we don't have to deal with two people on the same keyboard :P.

Here are the controls for the 3DO release:

I definitely find the controls for the 3DO a lot more intuitive than the PC.
So much so that I play it on my 3DO more often than the PC.

As for the differences; Videos, Voices, and Music remixes were added to the 3DO release which, in my opinion, enhances the game-play significantly.
I definitely can not play this game without at least the 3DO voices and remixes, although my anality (or OCD, whatever.) spawned the FMV Mod with the help of fellow Star Controllers.

When you get the 3DO and Star Control 2 you're definitely gonna have some fun.

You know I would honestly love to know which version the creators preferred after all was said and done :)
