Now that's fascinating.  Strangely enough, twitter does have a dictionary definition:
Quote
1
: to utter successive chirping noises
2
a : to talk in a chattering fashion b : giggle, titter
3
: to tremble with agitation : flutter

Given the stupid current trend for gibberish brand names, I'm surprised that Star Control hasn't presaged every other big name on the internet these days.
To wit:

Wooxie
Hulu
Frengo
Skype
Yuku
Noovo
Vevo
Meemo
Bing
Wakoopa
Thoof
Wixi
Kijiji

Tell me that this doesn't read just like the list of captain names for a new alien species in the SC universe.
I guess they'd be kind of like the Druuge, but with even more worthless gadgets on offer.  A few melee characteristics:

SHIP:  changes its own design every two seconds.
PRIMARY WEAPON:  live streaming content delivery for 4 HP/frame.  Charges enemy credit card.
SECONDARY WEAPON:  "socially networks" with enemy ship.  For 30 seconds, all enemy controls result only in status updates and "like"s.

....what do you think? I think it's TRENDING!

PRIMARY WEAPON:  live streaming content delivery for 4 HP/frame.  Charges enemy credit card.
SECONDARY WEAPON:  "socially networks" with enemy ship.  For 30 seconds, all enemy controls result only in status updates and "like"s.

If you told me they were real ship names, I'd believe you.  Unless, of course, you said it right now just to see if I'd believe.  The ship functions are hilarious.   I know where they got Bing – "Bing is not Google."  You know, the "un-Google" which is a lot like the "un-Cola" (I believe that was 7-up).  I hate it when companies advertise themselves as desirable because there are not the other dudes...  Twitter, I get. Yuku, no idea, and don't care. Skype, ditto.  Hulu, no idea except it might be Chinese?  Doesn't sound like it to me.

The simple answer is that, in order to get a .com address at this point, you need to either have a ludicrously long name (typically a bunch of words strung together without spaces) or a nonsense name. All the sensible names got taken a long time ago.

Yep.  Although there are other strategies available if you get creative - you can go the "i failed teh spelling bee lol" route ("Digg", "Reddit"), for instance.

Oh, wow, I never noticed this about Reddit's name... *smacks forehead*
Guess you learn something new every day... :)
