The Ur-Quan Masters Discussion Forum

Since it is so completely trivial to use your own music in UQM (just replace xxxxx.mod with xxxxx.ogg in the content/comm/xxxxx/ directory) I've started replacing the in-game music with tracks from my MP3 collection that I find "appropriate" to the spirit of the game.  It's rather fun; here's what I've come up with so far:

I invite everyone to listen, comment, and of course, share their own choices.  My own personal guideline for choosing songs is pretty much "lyric-free or damn close", so that the song does not interfere with the speech in the game, but noone says that has to be the rule for everyone.

If you want to try these out in your own copy of the game, you'll need to convert them from MP3 to OGG.  See elsewhere of the forums for advice on how to do that.

I am also using the Ilwrath and Shofixti remixes.

One that I think would be cool, but haven't decided where to put yet, is Metallica -- Call of the Ktulu (S&M version)

I'd like to use the Imperial March for the Ur-Quan.  ;)

In Slaughter Natives and Einstuerzende Neubauten = two amazing bands. I'm not sure I remember correctly the songs in question, I'll download and comment all 4 when I'm home... I like the idea!
Here's some other stuff I just thought of...:

• Chmmr: Ministry - Thieves (silly song, but has almost the same rhythm as the original Chmmr tune.. odd, that)
  
• Ur-Quan: something by Der Blutharsch or Puissance (excellent martial tunes music)
  
• Shofixti: Bah.... what's the name of that old silly song which has a sort of Japanese melody, and lyrics about Japan too? It was featured as a midi tune on level 10 of the Spear Resurrection TC for 'Spear of Destiny', if anyone else here played that... :D  Something with a Japanese-style melody would work here.
  
• Melee: Nitzer Ebb - Join in the Chant (Front 242 remix)
  
• QuasiSpace: Sort Vokter - Fjellstev (quite a haunting and beautiful ambient tune from this otherwise harsh black metal project)
  
• Slylandro Probe: Kraftwerk - Radioactivity ("The Mix" album version)
  
• Yehat: Death in June - Nation (instrumental track... can't describe how much it fits the Yehat).
  
• Kohr-Ah: Burzum - Paa Svarte Troner
  

If anyone knows those, tell me what you think. I'll try to think of more later.

Anyone got ideas for the sillier tunes (like Orz, Melnorme, Umgah, ZFP, Slylandro homeworld, Melnorme, Pkunk..?)

I tried it -- doesn't work for them at all.  It's too slow, and doesn't have the right "feel" under lines like "SENTIENT LIFE.  WE ARE THE UR-QUAN.  INDEPENDENCE IS INTOLERABLE.  BLAH BLAH BLAH."  :)

And it's too "brassy" to my ears to properly fit under the Kohr-Ah, but others may (and probably will) disagree.

I think it might work well with the Druuge though...

Try Metallica's remix of the Imperial March, perhaps...

I've got nothing at all that would be appropriate for the Syreen.  :(  I'm thinking something with a nice "porn-groove" bassline in it, mostly insrumental; to, erm, heighten the joke when "the lights go out"..

Perhaps someone who has a large pornography collection -- like, say, NEMT -- might have some music that fits the bill?

Oh man, NEMT would definitely be the one to ask, LMAO!!!

But to return to the topic and the Syreens - shouldn't there be something on the soundtrack of "Boogie Nights" to fit that 70s porn music feeling to match the Syreens?

BTW, I just noticed that I now am a "regular" w/ 2 stars - wohoo! Way to go  :D

nic. i think you did a great job finding those tunes...they fit amazingly well. i think the song you chose for ilwrath could work for the druuge as well, and for some reason, maybe the distortion etc. i think the utwig song might also fit the umgah.

In most cases, much trimming would be needed. Many would need to be looped in creative ways, since they have a lot of shape -- getting them to act well periodic could be tricky. In many cases, we would need to take out the vocal parts, rebalance, take down the dynamic range, etc.

William Howard Schuman Symphony 3, Toccata/finale (4th movement). Preserves the fearful yet wacky flavor. Only a certain part. The end is VERY non-spathi.

Prokofiev's Battle on the Ice, from Alexander Nevsky. Awkward due to its plot.

Excellent choices there! I don't think anything can beat your choice for Mycons.

OverClocked Remixes is an excellent source of quality instrumentals... only problem is they tend to be short because of the file size restriction. I VERY much like my choice of Orz :)

you're not talking on the one from Ra2 right?

Open up the folder lbm and sort by type - you'll see some .mod's and .ogg's of such names as hyper, battle, arispace, etc....
