Title: Using your own music Post by: Nic. on February 18, 2003, 11:35:04 pm Since it is so completely trivial to use your own music in UQM (just replace xxxxx.mod with xxxxx.ogg in the content/comm/xxxxx/ directory) I've started replacing the in-game music with tracks from my MP3 collection that I find "appropriate" to the spirit of the game. It's rather fun; here's what I've come up with so far:
If you want to try these out in your own copy of the game, you'll need to convert them from MP3 to OGG. See elsewhere of the forums for advice on how to do that. Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: ErekLich on February 19, 2003, 05:07:06 am I've made a few mods as well:
Starbase Commander: Everclear -- El Distorto Del Melodica Hyperspace: A techno remix of Legend Of Zelda I am also using the Ilwrath and Shofixti remixes. One that I think would be cool, but haven't decided where to put yet, is Metallica -- Call of the Ktulu (S&M version) sry I don't have a website to host on so y'all can't listen, but oh well... Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Scott on February 19, 2003, 07:22:18 pm I'd like to use the Imperial March for the Ur-Quan. ;)
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Vee-R on February 19, 2003, 07:55:05 pm In Slaughter Natives and Einstuerzende Neubauten = two amazing bands. I'm not sure I remember correctly the songs in question, I'll download and comment all 4 when I'm home... I like the idea!
Here's some other stuff I just thought of...:
If anyone knows those, tell me what you think. I'll try to think of more later. Anyone got ideas for the sillier tunes (like Orz, Melnorme, Umgah, ZFP, Slylandro homeworld, Melnorme, Pkunk..?) Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nic. on February 19, 2003, 10:16:42 pm Quote I'd like to use the Imperial March for the Ur-Quan. ;) I tried it -- doesn't work for them at all. It's too slow, and doesn't have the right "feel" under lines like "SENTIENT LIFE. WE ARE THE UR-QUAN. INDEPENDENCE IS INTOLERABLE. BLAH BLAH BLAH." :) And it's too "brassy" to my ears to properly fit under the Kohr-Ah, but others may (and probably will) disagree. Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Death 999 on February 19, 2003, 10:54:49 pm I think it might work well with the Druuge though...
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: ErekLich on February 19, 2003, 10:57:37 pm Try Metallica's remix of the Imperial March, perhaps...
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Omni-Sama on February 20, 2003, 01:18:10 am Shofixti - Turning Japanese
8) Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nic. on February 20, 2003, 01:58:35 am I've got nothing at all that would be appropriate for the Syreen. :( I'm thinking something with a nice "porn-groove" bassline in it, mostly insrumental; to, erm, heighten the joke when "the lights go out"..
Perhaps someone who has a large pornography collection -- like, say, NEMT -- might have some music that fits the bill? Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: GermanNightmare on February 20, 2003, 04:13:31 am Oh man, NEMT would definitely be the one to ask, LMAO!!!
But to return to the topic and the Syreens - shouldn't there be something on the soundtrack of "Boogie Nights" to fit that 70s porn music feeling to match the Syreens? BTW, I just noticed that I now am a "regular" w/ 2 stars - wohoo! Way to go :D Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nic. on May 05, 2003, 06:05:49 pm Quote I've got nothing at all that would be appropriate for the Syreen. :( I'm thinking something with a nice "porn-groove" bassline in it, mostly insrumental; to, erm, heighten the joke when "the lights go out".. Eureka! It's perfect!
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: mbassy on May 08, 2003, 01:44:41 pm nic. i think you did a great job finding those tunes...they fit amazingly well. i think the song you chose for ilwrath could work for the druuge as well, and for some reason, maybe the distortion etc. i think the utwig song might also fit the umgah.
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nic. on June 07, 2003, 12:53:19 am I came across these rather by accident, but they work rather well:
Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Death 999 on June 07, 2003, 04:55:51 am Death_999's classical (and a touch of jazz) uqm music list.
In most cases, much trimming would be needed. Many would need to be looped in creative ways, since they have a lot of shape -- getting them to act well periodic could be tricky. In many cases, we would need to take out the vocal parts, rebalance, take down the dynamic range, etc. Zoq-Fot-Pik: J.S.Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier(a.k.a. WTC) Book 1 Number 5, prelude in D major. Bouncy, harmonious -- the sound of cooperation and lots of little folk working or playing Frungy. Jump For Joy (I'm basing this on Dave Brubeck's version. Cool, bouncy, just a bunch of zoq, fot, and pik sittin around tiltin back the rocky fungal clinger beer. Ravel's String Quartet, mv 2. Slylandro (probes): WTC Book 1 Number 21 prelude first half Blue Rondo a la Turk (Dave Brubeck again) Sibelius String Quartet in d, mv 2 Slylandro (gas bags): Copland Symphony for Organ and Orchestra, mv 2 (scherzo) Mycon: Arvo Pärt's Magnificat or the Credo or Sanctus from his Berliner Messe Supox: Rodrigo's Concerto Aranjuez (for guitar), mv 1 Malcolm Dalglish's Throw the Window Open. Utwig: The second Kyrie from Bach's B minor mass (Forgive us!!! this one works great) Holst's Saturn, bringer of Old Age, from The Planets Arvo Pärt's Symphony 3, mv 1 Ur-Quan Kzer-Za: Gliere symphony 2 mv 1 (... ok...) Liszt's tone poem Hunnenschlacht (basically, the invasion of the Huns. Apt) Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah: Holst's Mars, Bringer of War, from The Planets. Vierne Symphony 2, finale Chenjesu (if there WERE chenjesu comm...): Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1 Number 1, prelude. Arilou: Holst's Mercury, from the Planets. Creatures of movement. Or Neptune, the Mystic, from the same. .. Creatures of mystery. Mahler Symphony 4 mv 2. Creatures who guided us from the first human Chmmr: Bach's Prelude and Fugue in B flat, BVW 560 (skip the fugue or you'll think they're Eeevil) Yehat: Holst's Moorside Suite, mv 3. Brassy, yet scottish. Syreen: Bizet, Carmen, Act II... the dance on the tavern table. Seductive, but not over-the-top like the habanera would have been. Orz: Bernstein, Psalm 2, verses 1-4, from The Chichester Psalms (middle/end of the 2nd movement). Warlike, yet wacky. Hard to loop, but otherwise ideal. Kodaly Dancing Song (umm, he probably wrote a million of these, sorry, can't nail it down more). All over, weird, wild... not violent, though. Britten, Ode to Saint Cecilia, mv 2. Childish. Druuge: Orff's Fortune Plango Vulnera (from Carmina Burana). All about money, baby. Menacing but not absolutely evil. Thraddash: Prokofiev's The Evil God and Dance of the Pagan Monsters, from the Scythian Suite. RAGE. Britten's Storm Sea Interlude, from Peter Grimes. Furious but undirected. Pkunk: Saint-Saens' Aviary, from Carnival of the Animals. Birds, airy, air-headed. Stravinsky's Dance of the Firebird, from The Firebird. Similar, but totally different. Quasispace: Saint-Saens' Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals. Quite alien. Ilwrath: Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, section entitled Harbingers of Spring (near the beginning) . Creeepy. Stravinsky's Dance of Kaschei's Retinue (but not the rest of his subjects) from The Firebird. Twisted, but comically ineffective (i.e. indicates a comic level of inneffectiveness) Spathi: William Howard Schuman Symphony 3, Toccata/finale (4th movement). Preserves the fearful yet wacky flavor. Only a certain part. The end is VERY non-spathi. Battle Music: Stravinsky's Infernal Dance of All Kastchei's Subjects, from The Firebird. Good. Prokofiev's Battle on the Ice, from Alexander Nevsky. Awkward due to its plot. Liszt's tone poem Hamlet. Prokofiev Invocation to Velas and Alas, from the Scythian Suite (also, entries for Kohr-Ah work here) Hyperspace: Britten's Sea Interlude on Sunday Morning. Not enough here for the entire track. Sibelius Symphony 5 first and third movements Umgah: Ernani Aguar's Psalm 150. Frenetic, a sense of humor. VUX: Walter Piston, Symphony 8, mv 1. Creepy, slimy, crawly, and mad AT YOU.. Orbit: almost anything by Arvo Pärt Aaron Copland's Quiet City Sibelius' By the Sea, from the incidental music for Pelleas and Melisande then, we get music that isn't in the game at the moment: Sun device finishing the Process: the obvious excerpt from Britten Sanctus from the War Requiem. (mmrm mrnm m rnm mrmn rmn rm RMNMNRM... WHAM !) Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nobbynob_Littlun on June 15, 2003, 04:29:15 am Excellent choices there! I don't think anything can beat your choice for Mycons.
OverClocked Remixes is an excellent source of quality instrumentals... only problem is they tend to be short because of the file size restriction. I VERY much like my choice of Orz :) Ur-Quan: Rape of a Planet (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00640) Shofixti: Arrakis Wormsign (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00060) (mmm) Thraddash: River City Rammstein (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00732) Syreen: MudMix (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00511) Ariloo: Let There Be LIGHT (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00475) Orz: Black Magic Synthesis (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00975) (WOOT!) Umgah: BubbleMan Soap and Water (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00375) Utwig: Beginnings (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00668) Chmmr: Metal Gear May Cry (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00690) Slylandro: Brambles in the Breeze (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00494) Pkunk: Ocarina Boogie (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00032) Probe: Echoes at a Distance (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00813) Hyperspace: Space Grind (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00981) Battle: Waztelands (http://remix.overclocked.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00926) From elsewhere.. Yehat: Ice Plains (http://crystaldream.vgmidi.com/newstuff/Kai_-_ice_plains.mp3) (Excellent..) Kohr-Ah: Necropolis (http://mattpollard.fourty-two.net/) (Site is currently down, so can't give direct link to mp3) Would be really cool to get the boss battle music from Rocket Knight Adventures put in smoothly for the battle music. Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Erig on June 15, 2003, 12:13:05 pm exactly which folder would the battle and hyperspace music be in?
I'm probably just missing them. but all these folder names go with the wierdness of the race names :P Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Slylendro on June 15, 2003, 03:34:11 pm Quote I'd like to use the Imperial March for the Ur-Quan. ;) you're not talking on the one from Ra2 right? Title: Re: Using your own music Post by: Nobbynob_Littlun on June 16, 2003, 12:12:54 am Open up the folder lbm and sort by type - you'll see some .mod's and .ogg's of such names as hyper, battle, arispace, etc....
