Title: new to the game and getting my butt kicked

I keep getting attacked by the Sylandro probes, back to back. I can kill1 but constantly being attacked makes the game unwinnable now. Not to mention my ship is nearly impossible to control...what am i doing wrong?

Did you watch the game intro? It should give you a clue as to what your first step should be.

Here's my (mostly rhetorical) question to you: why are you leaving the solar system?

or the game generates very many probes. Assuming you have done everything you need to do - consider practicing against probes in SuperMelee (and using ships other than your flagship, which is very poor at fighting early-game). There's a way to get a very good ship for probe-killing before leaving Sol, you might want to search the system thoroughly. :)
