Title: Best mods?
Post by: danzibr on July 09, 2012, 11:38:54 pm
First, I have to say I'm SO EXCITED for Project 6014!

So anyways, the other day I busted out the old 3DO and was encouraging my wife to play SCII.  But then... the 3DO turned out to be broken!  I attempted to fix it, but ultimately didn't do any good.  So I got to googling and stumbled across this site and SCII news and whatnot.  I downloaded the Ur-Quan Masters and was perusing a list of mods, and then... well, I don't know what mod(s) to try.  Any suggestions on the best mods out there at the moment?

I'd like to mention two melee mods:

Shiver's Balance Mod (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/User:Shiver/Balance_Mod) is an exhaustive overhaul of melee, meant especially for player-versus-player. It fixes many issues with vanilla melee, such as Ur-Quan being overpriced and Thraddash being utterly broken.

Elvish_Pillager's Crazy Mod (http://wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Crazy_Mod) is a... different kind of melee overhaul. It lives up to its name, believe me. It's based on the previous version of UQM, so you'll need a copy of UQM 0.6.2 (or more precisely its content package) to run it.

Cool, thanks.  I installed the first one and like it so far.  The second one looks cool, but... I'd rather not go back to an earlier version of UQM.

Any thoughts on UQM Extended Edition (http://www.submedia.net/uqm/)?  It looks good.  I installed it yesterday and when I go to select the controls there's nothing, so I may have installed it improperly.

There's no need to remove UQM 0.7, so far as I know. It should be happy with its own directory set up with UQM 0.6 content (with the executable placed in 'uqm-crazy'):

Code:
uqm-crazy/content/packages/uqm-0.6.0-content.uqm

UQM 0.6 content is available here: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:FreeSpace_1

Well I got the UQM Extended Version to work finally.  Took some finagling with the control settings.  Now I'm curious to see what all mods can work with it.  Currently, Shiver's melee balance mod seems a no go.

So I finally got around to getting some 0.6 version of UQM (this one (http://www.hotud.org/component/remository/func-startdown/17706/), if you're curious), but... now I have no idea how to get the crazy melee mod to work.  I downloaded the file 1.4.3-src.tar.gz, but have no clue what to do with it.  The instructions said something like, "compile like normal."  What?

That is the source code for Crazy Mod (1.4.3-SouRCe, you see :)). The idea is to unzip it in the same directory as a copy of UQM source, replacing it, and then compile UQM 'as normal'. You probably want the Crazy Mod Windows binary here: http://eli.cedarswampstudios.org/crazy_mod_windows_1.4.3.zip

Thanks for the link!

I tried it, and, well, still can't get it to work.  Maybe I should move over to the technical issues part of the forums.  In any case, is it compatible with 0.6.2?  That's the only thing I can think of.  The link you posted earlier, to hard-light.net, doesn't seem to work for me.

Let's just make sure:

 - First, you install UQM 0.6.2.
 - Then, you copy the UQM Crazy files into the UQM 0.6.2 installation directory.

Is that what you did?

I installed 0.7, then 0.6.2 over it, then did the stuff from the zip.  I uninstalled the old 0.6.2 and am now reinstalling 0.6.2 and am going to try the zip stuff again.  I'll report back shortly.

Yeah, I just did exactly that... but now I see that my normal 0.6.2 UQM won't run either.  Both installs I did were bad.  I used this one:

http://www.hotud.org/component/remository/func-startdown/17706/

I'll try to find another I suppose.

In any case, thanks for trying to help!

Ack. That is incorrect, I must have had the wrong thing in my clipboard or something. Meant to point at:
