Title: Thank you for letting me play one of my all time fav games again! (&SC1?)
Post by: Kaldar5 on September 29, 2012, 01:31:03 pm
Damn I love me some SC2. Thank you to all the crew at Ur-Quan Masters for this project.

I still have the box from my old PC version.

Question: How impossible would it be to incorporate Star Control 1 campaign mode?
I really miss the 2 player strategy and building.

I know, another noob asking for unreasonable things when you already provide miracles.
But hey, you pamper us, only natural we get spoiled.

think a few people were interested in making a SC1 mod for UQM, don't think they've gotten anywhere. You can get the original SC1 on GOG.com though: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/star_control_1_2

Any reason to play that over the Genesis ROM of SC1?

Last I knew PC SC1 had terrible bings and dings for sound.

The Genesis version is notorious for being completely unoptimized (by TFB's own admission, since they weren't given the time to do so before it was rushed out the door by Accolade) and running very slowly. I suppose you could consider that a major gameplay difference, if speed is important to you.

There is also the Amiga version, though. :) Basically the same as the PC version, but with SC2-quality sound effects (and SC2's Ur-Quan music in the title screen) and some minor errors corrected.

SC1 having terrible sound in DOS is normal? I assumed it was an issue I was having with DOSBox.

Sound in SC1 in DOSBox is problematic for several reasons:
  • MT-32 sound (the default in e.g. the GOG release) sounds awful unless you have an MT-32 or compatible device. The Munt emulator is apparently pretty good nowadays. If you don't set up an MT-32 compatible MIDI device, this will probably end up being played as General MIDI, which replaces all the sounds with essentially random musical instruments. If you get it right, you get pretty good music and some decent, albeit vaguely musical, sound effects.
  • Adlib sound is what most people used to hear back in the day and consists of a decent array of different bleeps and bloops and other droning and beeping sounds. This one works pretty well without much configuring of DOSBox.
  • Tandy sound only seems to work in Tandy graphics mode and consists almost entirely of square waves and the occasional white noise.
  • CMS sound is basically like Tandy, but with more channels.
  • Internal speaker doesn't work in DOSBox yet due to limitations of the current PC speaker emulator.

None of these sounds anything like the Amiga version that SC2 takes its sound from, since all the sound effects are synthesised rather than sampled. I'd go for Adlib, or MT-32 if you can get it working right.

This is true, but since it's for VS play, speed was never a problem.

Devastatingly loud and fierce Ur-Quan fusion blasts firing and making explosive impact noises to unnerve the opponent? That's essential. "Dings" are not acceptable.

I remember chasing down more agile opponents with a Ur-Quan Dreadnaught, and any time I had a spare moment or could not catch up, I would hammer the hell out of the planet. It just sounds so brutal it can make your opponent wince and eventually cause a bit of anxiety when they do engage.

It's true, there has been precisely zero progress on this. (I say this as one of the people interested in doing it.) Unless you count extracting all the resources from DOS SC1 as progress. I don't think it really counts, even though it was rather difficult to do.
