Title: Fan Art!
Post by: Kwayne on August 19, 2013, 04:56:39 pm
Thought I start a simple, generic fan art thread, because there couldn't be enough of them, opening with my new SC2 C64 demake screen:

I'll contribute with an old sketch I made of Zelnick. It was colored by an unknown deviant artist.

Hehe good old days when we did the GL web comic...A shame I didn't have a lot of time to invest back then! I loved every second of it!

The Real Syreen! An encounter with the Syreen in their original form, without the psychically induced freudian idealization of their image.

Yes, and it was a serious question. There is a resemblance.

I do indeed use the SC3 puppet as the basis, though I found that the original doesn't have much content, so I made up some additional stuff to fill the screen.

Oh I know. I actually took the time to play through SC3 recently. Just had to experience it for myself, once.

The memories of those puppets shall haunt my dreams, for many nights...

Maybe you could help @dczanik a little to get rid of the present ugly orange peel skin of the trade master in UQM HD Beta?  ;)

@Jugger: making my own version and releasing it as a mod might be even better. Talking from experience, I'd rather not work with dczanik when the work involves his artistic vision.

Not from me at the moment. I was and still working on some pictures from NOMAD, another SC2-ish game.
I expect to work on some commercial stuff with Shiver Games early nex year.
When I return to SC themed art I'll probably try my hand with some UQM64 stuff.

Working on my own game so I have very little time for graphics, but I was thinking a lot about making more of these comm screen demake mockups, maybe animating them later -- even if only recreationally -- while I'm trying to strongarm a midi editor to chirp me some listenable tunes.

Title: Re: Fan Art!
Post by: Kwayne on September 18, 2016, 02:41:40 pm
The Arilou soundtrack is probably the most compatible with SID sound. I'm not great with music software but I remember a time when I was experimenting with creating SID-like versions of SC2 themes. Right now I'm looking for MID versions so I can apply SID samples on midi notes with OpenMPT.

I actually had the same idea, also with the arilou theme. But somehow I didn't get the sound right as I had it in my head.
LMMS is a good DAW to make SID tunes since it has a nice SID emulator and is easy to work with. By the way, there are many tools that can convert MOD to MIDI so it shouldn't be too hard to convert one and then apply your SID sample. Then again, if you're a decent musician you should be able to play the SC2 songs by ear into a decent daw ;).

I've joined the Protovision group quite recently, which is a bunch of C64 enthusiasts making and helping the development of C64 games. Maybe some time I can convince a composer there to make authentic SID versions.

Because they were never shown anywhere... there was some talk about a proposed "races" section on the 'new' PoNaF, so that was more or less the intended target, but of course that never materialized.

Nice, Kwayne.

I liked the Doog, although I found them too shipd to be a spacefaring race wirh several colonies, and a too high regeneration rate....
But the idea...

Still, this image tops it all....

Title: Re: Fan Art!
Post by: Death 999 on October 26, 2017, 03:46:42 pm
Uplift can handle a lot. But the regeneration rate was out of control. And it combined poorly with the auto-aim short-range main weapon.

If their main had a much lower firing rate but much higher damage, that could have worked. Or if it only auto-aimed to the nearest 90°.

You know, I think spathi would generally be hermit-crab-like in that they'd conventionally wear armor even in social situations

Very nice drawing, but I wonder how a species like that was able to develop its mechanical arms. Would be difficult to develop mechanical arms for a species that doesn't seem to have any arms/fingers. Dolphins have bigger brains than humans, but they don't have any arms/fingers, so they haven't been able to develop any technology.

If the lore still holds true, Spathi are very social creatures. Tending to stick to very large crowds from birth.
It may be that a collective of Spathi worked together to use their bodies to make tools, to make tech, to further the protection of their species.

I don't know about the seriousness of brain size. Lets just say that sapient species have a brain trait that is not found in common sentient species.

Maybe they got small arms under the domes on the sides of that saddle.

But seriously, I don't think too deep about how plausible the design of a race should be when I make Star Control themed drawings. Adopting such inhibitions would result in satisfyingly believable races, but would also prevent me to draw a lot of fun stuff. Most races -- I think -- in SC2 feel genuinely alien because either they look or they think in a way that is simply outside the boundaries of what we as humans tend to accept as functional or believable. The Zoq-Fot-Pik, the Melnorme, the Slylandro, the Mycon are all questionable when it comes to their ability to manipulate their environment, yet that doesn't stop them being very essential in defining Star Control's distinct style of presenting alien races.

Not enough pixelation...
Nice!

Technically I think it's plausible but I admit it still looks a bit advanced for a supposedly 1992 game.

That depends on how you define "advanced". The resolution of the Mowling's picture appears about right, although it's hard to tell. In terms of artistic quality, I think that George Barr's SC2 art is absolutely gorgeous, even when rendered in SC2's original low resolution (although, now that I've seen the original artwork, the artifacts of that artwork being translated into 320x200 become very obvious - the VUX's communication device became a complete mess in-game, for example). But then again, SC2 was cutting-edge for its day.

Of course, I have no idea what limitations SC2 had on its graphics other than the resolution and the color palette. For example, I don't know if there were any limitations on the animation, how many frames there could be, and so on. So I don't know if it was possible to show those Mowlings in the background bowing up and down constantly as they did in SCO. Although SC2 comm screens generally have a lot of movement going on - the Spathi has both claws constantly clacking, that weird liquid in the eye is constantly sloshing, and the eye blinks from time to time...

By the way, what is that third ship in the Vindicator's fleet supposed to be? A Mu'Kay Grasper?

Technically as many frames as you need, they just need to be coded into the race's comm file.
The Arilou come out on top with 162 frames of animation and the Pkunk have the lowest at 15.

The only limitation would be the tedium of coding and creating those frames.
