Title: Feature Request: planet collision computer
Post by: Dave Morse on February 26, 2003, 11:43:41 pm
As we know, because of the way the camera works, its not always possible to tell when you're going to have a crippling collision with the planet.

If a blinkenlight sounded when a ship was on a collision course, then you could take evasive action.

I used to want one, but after some thought and playing I've decided part of the fun is the unpredictability.

I think it might be a good idea for timewarp or a sequel (every sequel must have new features  ;) ) but I really don't see a "need" for this.  If someone wants to add it as an option, by all means, but I won't be using it...

Half the fun is crashing into a planet at high speed when you least expect it.  Its just a game... random, amusing stuff it great!  :P

In the end I come down on the side of no explicit warning.

Maybe a little more margin so you have a little time to react - but no more interface items.

Speaking of margins - and a bug I WOULD like fixed... could we have the solar system zoom out before you get right to the freaking edge? It's annoying to not be able to see where the planet you want to mine next is just because you happened to loop a little too close to the sun... Also, you could be heading right towards the fleet that's charging you and you can't see them because of the level of zoom.... and you can't see two inches in front of your face.

It strikes me as a very Traddash thing rally. Zipping around jollily and suddenly going boom! another example of great slapstick humor!

The whole idea for my first Timewarp ship stemmed from my memories of the planet killing me in SC1 and SC2.  I would be more amenable to handicapping the AI so that it's unaware of an off-screen planet too.  >:-)

Besides, if you can near miss the planet many times you can be considered as an expert pilot.

When fighting either Ur-Quan at SC2 early stages, I use an Eluder which is fast & could crash any time. I manage to swing away in time mostly. But I crash some time too.   :P

As for asteroids. they saved me as many times as they caused me problems. Save by the Dreadnaught Fusion hitting it instead of me. Problems by it blocking my way & got shot from behind by the enemy.
