Sorry, had to submit that news post to, about the open source Star Control 2 alpha.  I think that the Slashdot croud is mature enough to understand that this is an alpha, and therefore buggy and unfinished.

Gaming sites and gaming magazines should be sent concise notifications of the 1.0 release because there are thousands of Star Control fans out there that are not aware of this project... and many of them have forgotten of Star Control 2, but once reminded of it and the availability of a free version of it would definitely enjoy the game.

If they get to see it too early, it can only put people off.
The people that have forgotten about SC2 can't really mind that they'll wouldn't be notified until it's stable.
And the real fans are very likely to notice it anyhow.
Besides, the announcement that there was going to be a port had gone out to a lot of gaming magazines at the start of the project (by TFB) already.

And then there's the fact that the last couple of days, I haven't spent a lot of time fixing bugs as I've been answering questions that could have been in a FAQ, if we've been prepared for this. And also we would have set up a Bugzilla or Gnats database.

And we would never have announced it while the forums were down.

On the bright side, there are a couple of new people who seem willing to help us out with the port.
Whether they will stick around and really can code always remains to be seen, but it might have been worth it after all.

I thought about submitting something to Slashdot when the release was made... but figured it wouldn't be a good idea :P

In my opinion, the best thing, "true" or "hardcore" fans can do is to do serious bug testing, and to spread the word to anyone and everyone that enjoyed the original SC2 or the 3DO SC2.

This is the kind of game that will spread by word of mouth alone.  Yes I understand it is just an alpha, and as I said, the slashdot croud tends to be more skilled with computers than the general gaming community.

My point is that once the 1.0 release is completed, it is your duty as a fan to spread the word.  I know a few friends of mine who are in other states now, yet back in the day really enjoyed SC2, and  when I see them this Christmas, I will tell them about the alpha rerelease.

I want to see Star Control 2 installed on every computer, right next to FreeCell, Minesweeper, and Solitaire.  I am sure something like this will happen with Linux distros, as long as SC2 gains enough mindshare.

I've had my server slashdotted before and have a rough idea of the "MANY" people that can be flooding your site. All my site was really serving was a 25KB .jpg that was updated 2-3 times a minute and the server crawled with default apache settings... up to 7000 visitors in 1 hour, dropping by a few hundred every subsequent hour.

You can imagine how the SC2 .exe servers must have felt considering they were holding a 100+MB executable and from the sourceforge page more than 70000 downloads have been recorded thus far... Man.

Still, I think having SC2 on slashdot would definitely have got the project some much-needed publicity. That's how I found out of the port, and that's the reason I've spent a good deal of hours on the alpha version so far. It's amazing!
