Title: Project 6014 = Dead?
Post by: Typo91 on January 15, 2015, 11:13:44 pm
I am new here, but i noticed the version i just played was dated 2012... version 2.1

so is project 6014 really dead? 2 years and no update?  if so thats a real shame, i somewhat enjoyed it, but i found the wrecked ship pretty fast...

I got a good chuckle at the Syreen base too.

The last UQM release is also quite old.
But there are changes happening in Git. Not many, but slight improvements are still happening... :)

The project has been going pretty slow until recently due to a lack of programmers. Lately there have been a few people offering their help, who also seem adequate in the UQM-codebase and things might happen soon(tm). Check the thread for Project6014 to see if something happens :p

I've been following P6014 for over ten years now.  It's not dead, it's just that it takes a long time to write such a massive game.  Especially when you're working in your spare time, with a large group of other people who are also working in their spare time, because nobody is getting paid to make this thing happen.

And for ten years we never get bored with the same explanation: don't expect much, it's a huge project, nobody is getting paid, everybody is working in their spare time. Ask again next year, for the same results. :)

SC2 was huge as well, wasn't made by a big team either, buildt from scratch yet didn't take 10+ years to make it.

I'm planning to download it when it's complete. As you can probably tell, I'm very patient.

Building SC2 was the Creator's *day job* for a few years though. Furthermore, SC2 wasn't built from scratch either, there is at least some SC1 stuff in the UQM code to this day (besides obvious remnants, my personal suspicion is that most of melee dates back to SC1).

That's fine, but you have to admit that it takes focus and commitment to a project to actually finish it, which doesn't hinge on it being a day job or working for money out of contractual obligation. There are mod projects that required more content work and were completed in much less time under similar conditions. 10 years is waaay too long to be explained by gracious excuses, and it's kind of funny to still pretend that these delays are reasonable and there's no problem with how the project is managed at all.

Wow, I didn't realize it was 10 years.

To be absolutely honest, I was taking Steve-O's comment at face value there. The wiki article on Star Control says that P6014 was started on February 2009.

That sounds a lot more like it, yes.

If you look at the first post of the Project 6014 (http://forum.uqm.stack.nl/index.php?topic=4409.msg57370#msg57370) thread, you'll read that Cedric6014 posted on 2 February 2009 that he now publicly shares the code to develop more.
But he did work on it before, and already provided a working hyperspace star-map and other smaller bits with this first post and opening of the public project.

Wow, only 2009?  It seems like so much longer. =P

Now we're close to 2022 and we can safely say it's dead...
