Title: Star Control 2 music like instruments for musagi?
Post by: Sargon on October 15, 2016, 12:31:11 pm
Hi there,

I have been a member of this forum years ago(I am back).

I try to write some music in musagi from time to time(not so good at it).
However, I find the available instruments very limited...
I wonder if there is some sort fo a pack for Star Control 2 music like instruments I could use for Musagi?
I am not sure where the instruments in Star Control 2 are from... I recall liking the music a lot, but years later I discovered this kind of instruments were more common in Amiga/Commodor games? Or are those instruments unique to Star Control 2?

Even if I can't get the exact instruments from SC2, I would like to know if it is possible to get similar instruments for musagi?

The original sound files are ".mod" tracker files.
They include the instruments, and a table of instruction when to play which instrument in which note.
So, yes, out of the original .mod you will be able to extract the original instruments.

Google a bit, and you'll find many tools doing that for you.
But also most sound editors are still able to load .mod files, although the format is not widely used anymore. There is still a pretty active scene making .mod files, as they are rather easy to work with.

Most of the instruments are pretty standard with the exception of a few sound effects here and there.

Lots of synths, basses, strings, brass, woodwinds. Drumsets are occasionally different.

You'd have to tell us what songs you'd think of taking inspiration from before getting an accurate list of instruments.
