Title: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on October 16, 2016, 08:28:37 am For quite some time, I've been bothered by the fact that some of the Melnorme dialogue is missing from the game - especially the part about the Metachron, which is actually important to the gameplay.
Some time back I recorded some additional Mycon dialogue that filled in the important dialogue gaps for those guys, but when I tried to do the same for the Melnorme, I just wasn't able to mimic the Melnorme voice and their associated audio effects closely enough to integrate additional dialogue semi-seamlessly into the existing dialogue. However, truth be told I never really liked the Melnorme voice all that much - I think it's too flat and lacks comic timing - so I decided to re-record all the lines myself. After a very long time of working on it, that's now complete, and I've created a mod that will let you put my re-recorded lines in the game. Please note that I'm not a professional voice actor or sound editor, but I did my best, and personally I prefer this version to the original. You can get it here: www.warpstormstudios.com/uqmmod/MelnormeDialogueFix.zip Installation is a bit of a pain since you'll have tor replace files in existing UQM archives, but the readme should walk you through it. Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on October 25, 2016, 10:37:18 pm So, uh, has anyone tried it out?
Does it work as expected? Is it good? Is it bad? Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Death 999 on October 26, 2016, 03:41:00 am I'm impressed by the effort for sure! I haven't tried it (actually I haven't been able to get any UQM to work in a while)
Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on October 28, 2016, 12:12:44 pm Just fixed up one line that had some audio clipping issues.
Still hoping to hear from anyone who has tried this out - anyone feel they prefer this one to the original? Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: danzibr on November 07, 2016, 07:58:05 pm I haven't played SCII in a while, and to be honest I probably won't play it again for a while, but when the time comes, I'll definitely use your mod!
Unfortunately, probably won't be a while, so I can't give any feedback for the time being :P Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: JHGuitarFreak on November 11, 2016, 03:55:59 am Australia or New Zealand? ;D
You probably didn't have to compress these files as much as the originals, though I guess it would have been jarring to have the low quality samples then suddenly a crisp, clear stereo sample for the Melnorme. SOME TIME HAS PASSED I made a .uqm pack for ya so you can simply drop the .uqm file in the addon directory and call on it using the CLI option, "--addon MelnormeVoicePack" https://sourceforge.net/projects/uqm-mods/files/Misc/MelnormeVoicePack.uqm/download Now you don't have to go through the trouble of overwriting the original files or moving the originals and replacing them with these. One little criticism, the text and audio are not synchronized. There are spots where the text lags behind your audio. But that may have already existed and I never noticed it until I was paying attention. EDIT: Also, no readme was supplied in your zip file. Just a heads up And I never said great job with the voice. Definitely a change but I can get used to it. Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on November 11, 2016, 01:51:17 pm Ok, here we go. I uploaded some videos.
First, a video showing the mod in action during some of the early dialogues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWt2wj7pFU8 And a video showing the previously missing 'metachron' dialogue, which my mod restores: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12CxK3KG0t0 Australia or New Zealand? ;D You probably didn't have to compress these files as much as the originals, though I guess it would have been jarring to have the low quality samples then suddenly a crisp, clear stereo sample for the Melnorme. My .zip download DOES include a readme, as well as a 'melnorme.txt' file that has to be put in the base package directory. The text and audio not being synchronized would probably be because you're missing the updated melnorme.txt file - it's synchronized just fine for me (see the youtube videos). EDIT: Tried to add the videos to my first post so they don't get lost, but looks like I can't edit that anymore... Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Death 999 on November 11, 2016, 06:19:05 pm Oooh, that sounds good.
... I really need to get UQM working again, some time. I've just been so strung out lately, what with the impending collapse of western civilization (/exaggeration) Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: JHGuitarFreak on November 11, 2016, 09:00:01 pm Thank you very, very much for making the pack... but I think you're missing some files! I just checked and I feel a little stupid. I also screwed up the rmp just a little bit. A new version of the .uqm should be available within 10 minutes at the same link. Thank you, I've downloaded it now. Do you know if it will work for both The Ur-Quan Masters HD and The Ur-Quan Masters HD Remix? They use slightly different package names, and HD actually calls them .zip files rather than .uqm files. More importantly: is there a guide somewhere for creating my own addon packages/creating the .rmp file? I'd like to be able to create these myself in the future. Oooh, that sounds good. ... I really need to get UQM working again, some time. I've just been so strung out lately, what with the impending collapse of western civilization (/exaggeration) Thank you, I'm glad you like it. Personally I think it's an improvement, and I say this as someone who normally doesn't like the sound of their own recorded voice. Have you tried The Ur-Quan Masters HD remix release? Doesn't even require installing, just extract and you should be good to go... Even though I nerf it down to the original graphics. The addon system was not changed for HD, .uqm is just a .zip file renamed. To figure out the package system take a look at the .rmp files inside each .zip or .uqm It is simply a set of instructions telling the game where to look for the files either inside a .zip or directory. Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Death 999 on November 14, 2016, 04:04:07 am Well, HD works! yay! And so I'm playing through with the kids in the captain's seat (I'm pilot). So, I'll see about using the addon.

Personally, I recommend playing HD REMIX (http://www.moddb.com/games/the-urquan-masters-hd-remix/) It fixes some bugs, including one that makes audio too quiet in relation to background music. Plus it lets you use the remix tracks. Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on November 21, 2016, 11:32:01 pm Just updated my mod to v1.1. Fixed my pronounciation on 'Taalo', which I was't happy with.
In the near future I'm going to make it into an addon and create an actual page to host it (probaby alongside the Mycon dialogue fix I did much earlier). Will advise when that happens. Title: Re: Melnorme dialogue fix/new Melnorme voice mod Post by: Soul Reaver on November 28, 2016, 07:24:52 am Ok! I've made an official site to host these mods on. If I ever update them, the updates will be posted here:
http://www.warpstormstudios.com/uqmmod/ This also includes a standalone version of my Mycon dialogue fix (which is already included in the HD and HD Remix versions, but is missing from vanilla) |
