Title: With XP game wont run, please help
Post by: wickedneckcutta on March 23, 2003, 09:01:29 pm
Hello,

I just recently downloaded the newest alpha.  I double click on the shortcut icon on my desktop and it won't start!  All I get is a little DOS type box that pops up for a half of a second and nothing actually starts.  Not sure if I was supposed to download something else or what!

Thanx in advance!

In order to tell what is going on, we'll need to know just what that little DOS-type window is saying before it disappears.  I'm sure it's something quite related to the fact that the game won't start.

Just in case you're not 100% sure how to get that information, here's some advice on how:
  • Right-click on the shortcut icon for UQM and choose "Properties" from the context menu.
  • open a Command Prompt (not a DOS prompt anymore, thanks to Microsoft Marketing!)
  • In the command prompt, change directory to the location specified in the "Start in" dialog of the properties window you broght up initially.
  • In the command prompt, run the command listed in the  "Target" dialog of the properties window you broght up initially.  Copious amounts of output should fill the screen, which may or may not explain to you what the problem is.
If you need any additional help with this, let us know..

Ok, here is the error message I got:

c:\Program files\The Ur-Quan Masters\uqm.exe
Fatal error: content not available, running wrong dir?

And that is exactly what it said.  Pleaes advise.

Inside your "The Ur-Quan Masters" folder, you should have another folder called "content"  Inside that "content" folder, there should be a file called "starcon.txt"  If you don't have that folder or file, then something went wrong during the install.

Have no fear, it's easy to correct.  Simply head over to The SourceForge project page (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=59452) and download uqm-0.2-content.zip, then unpack the contents of that file into a folder called "content", and place that folder inside your "The Ur-Quan Masters" folder.

If you want to hear the speech and new music as well, download the uqm-0.2-3domusic.zip and uqm-0.2-voice.zip files, and unpack them into "content" as well.

Well, I followed your suggestions and downloaded the files you suggested to the "content" folder and unpacked them.  My content folder now has all the races with various sounds in the individual folders.

I also have a starcon item in this "content" folder.   However, it is not a .txt file.  Instead this is a "registration entry".

When I go to run the uqm.exe file from the command prompt I'm still getting the same error.

Any other suggestions/advice is welcome, thanx again.

Actually I noticed that I downloaded the following:

uqm-0.1_to_0.2-content.zip
uqm-0.1_to_0.2-voice.zip
uqm-0.2-3domusic.zip

Is the content in the files I listed above different from the ones below:

uqm-0.2-content.zip
uqm-0.2-voice.zip

And if so, how do I proceed from here?

Thanx!

It sure is. You'll need the full content file, not the patch.

Thanx you very much for your help.  Seems to work fine!

Also, is seems that with this game the video seems to "skip".  I play a lot of  Warcraft 3 and this never happens.  However, this type of thing does happen when my girlfriend plays Zoo Tycoon.  I know this has something to do with my computer and I was wondering if you could help me diagnose this problem.  It is a continual problem with the screen skipping every 10 seconds or so.

Thanx again for your help with getting it working!

Well, one quick fix you can try is to download the latest drivers for your video card.
