Title: iOS version?
Post by: Hugesc2fan on April 22, 2017, 09:59:21 pm
As the title asks, are you (or anyone else you know of) porting this magnificent game to iOS? It seems like a perfect game for a mobile touchscreen format and I'd love to play it on my iPad. :)

There's the issue of costs. AFAIK developer status for iOS is pretty expensive, so you'd have to ask money to break even the costs. But the used OS (open source) licence forbids commercial use, even ads...

There once was an apple version (desktop apple), but I don't know if that has even been kept up to the current UQM version....

To answer that last bit, UQM-HD has an up-to-date mac build.

iOS has little to do with macOS.  Also UQM-HD was never finished.  Closest you will get to a finished project is the HD version of MegaMod, which also has an "up-to-date" macOS version.  Really it was built on a very old version of OSX but Apple has pretty good backwards compatibility and stuff compiled for 10.6 intel will usually work on 10.12, especially if it's not dependent on old apple technologies. (As it is SDL).  Actually it HAS to be compiled for the old OS as there is a bug which rears it's ugly head if it's built with clang which all modern versions of Xcode uses, and in-turn must be built with the apple version of gcc 4.2 as that is the only other option...

According to Wikipedia, iOS is a spin off of MacOS X....

But yeah, they are not compatible with each other. But porting is possible, if you're versed in the one you're porting to.
But I am not, nor do I have an iOS SDK or developer status.

In theory someone could port UQM over to iOS for free but you wouldn't be able to distribute it through the Apple Store without paying the membership fees.
Which the lowest option is $99 a month.

If I had the know how I would give it a shot myself. I've tried porting my mod over to Android and it is simply a nightmare to deal with.

From a technical standpoint, yes.  But from a coder/design standpoint nope.

That's totally understandable and something I hadn't thought about. Maybe one day, though...
