Title: Incorrect music credit in wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Star_Control_Music
Post by: PaulReiche on March 31, 2018, 08:43:12 pm
Howdy Folks,

While scanning our mod contest music entry envelopes from 1992 and comparing them with the info in wiki.uqm.stack.nl/Star_Control_Music, I found one error worth noting -- the original melee combat music was created by Marc (Maruku) Brown, not Dan Nicholson as shown on the page.  Dan created tons of awesome music, just not that one.

- Paul

Interesting. I've always wondered what Marc Brown's contribution to SC2's music was, since there were no MOD files that credited him as the composer. But, the MOD file for the original battle music clearly says "Dan Nicholson":

Quote
HSBASS4.SAM
ZBASS.SAM
ZSNARE.SAM
KLAXON.SAM

    Music For Battle!
Dan Nicholson
908-687-3479

So, why did this happen? Did someone else edit in his name by mistake?
Anyway, I've edited the entry on Ultronomicon.

Huh, usually the comments in the MOD are correct.  Perhaps it would be wise to revert the credit back to Dan and let me investigate a little further.  Sorry if this was a goose chase.

I tracked down Marc's original MOD and while it was one of our contest winners, it wasn't used in the game -- Dan Nicholson's credit should be restored (sorry Dan!)

Can we hear it?

I've always been fascinated with unused material.

I second that request!
I would also love to hear for which he was "winner"...

I'd be happy to pass on Marc's MOD.  What's the most convenient way to make the file available to everyone?

Maybe a plot post with links to whatever web-accessible file storage you have?  Would be neat to see a blog post all about what was left on the cutting room floor, along with original sources for the beautiful cut scene art in the game.

If nothing else, Amazon Drive allows for specific file sharing via web links.

Any file sharing service would do. I would very much like to get the actual MOD, to play it in a tracker.

Paul personally emailed me the file and said I could host it any way I wanted to share with you guys, so here it is: http://files.serosis.net/Misc/MARUCMBT.MOD

Fascinating track. Personally I feel it doesn't fit in with the other tracks in UQM but that could simply be nostalgia-goggles.

cool, thhanks.

This device has no tracker installed, so I'll play and listen tomorrow.

And if you'd played the original game without ever meeting the Pkunk, the Pkunk soundtrack would sound off too. That was smply true forall of them...

Neat mod.  Already giving me prompting to implement certain effects in my side project.  (Plus fix a Effect F, Ticks Per Division/Beats Per Minute issue.  For some reason, two Effect F settings in one division.)  Found a new test mod.

EDIT:  Took adding a few features to the audio subsystem and getting the module player to process the effects, but...  Seems like it works.  I'll need to do some careful verification with comparative listening with MilkyTracker to check to make sure the effect work as intended.

Thanks for sharing this. It sounds sort of Street Fighter-ish. Wouldn't want it over the melee theme you guys went with. Maybe it would've worked over a cutscene - an Utwig battlegroup ambushing some Kohr-Ah?

Finally got around to sit down and listen to the mod..

Interesting comment in the MOD, he used the names of the samples to complain about the disk manufacturer....

I agree with Serosis. Not really fitting SC2.

Too playful and forceful at the same time...
And switching between musical statements....

When talking to a race, mixing statements may be okay (e.g. agressive Melnorme after you took some RU, and peaceful Melnorme), but that would be easier implemented through different MODs.

(BTW, using/testing OpenMPT, as it allows to work without being installed - handy for work machines, or on a guest machine/account - works astonishingy well.)

BTW, jsut found "The MOD archive", which has an online player, so you can play any track within your browser...
Doesn't seem to that great player, but works for a first listening...

I also saw at least the Yehat theme online. https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=62681

Maybe upload it there and link it from here?
So that everyone can listen themselves, even if quality ain't that great using the online player...

I could really see this theme working with Androsynth, if they were in the game.

And I can't shake the feeling that I've already heard it somewhere else. Which is not impossible, given that it's been around since 1992, though I'm certain I've never read the comments in the MOD file before.

The same feelings. But in tracker music, there were often similar compositions. For me, for example, it strongly reminded some of the tracks from the Jazz Jackrabbit soundtrack.

I agree with player1: there's very much "synth" in this piece of music. After hearing it I too immediately thought that it could work very well as Androsynth theme with matching gfx/animation.

It also sounds a bit like the Druuge theme, at least at the beginning; and I think I can also hear some resemblances to Jazz Jackrabbit as mentioned.

I ended up using this in Gorno for the main game. Felt it was appropriate for a shmup-like, and that a shmup-like would be the best genre to tell Delta Gorno's story :P
