Title: Digital speech.
Post by: Rusty Greer on May 16, 2003, 05:29:53 pm
I just started playing this re-released version of Star Control 2.  Great game, but I seem to be experiencing some issues with the speech.  I can hear it fine, but it has a great deal of static coming through as well.  Any ideas on how to improve the sound quality, or is this just the way it is?

Try adding the command line option "-q high" if you're running it on windows, another command line option you might want to use is "--sound=openal". That fixed the static for me.

The speech samples aren't originally very high quality either.  There's a lot distortion and noise in the samples itself which cannot be fixed with any parameters.

Funny, even on the default 'medium' setting I'm getting quite small levels of distortion. Maybe I just have lower standards...

Most likely :) As an musician I have quite high standards.. not to mention that I'm more or less perfectionist. :)

I'm a musician too, but I guess my gamer self is doing the judging here.

Anyway, I'm SUCH a musician that my aural preprocessing is much better at hearing pitch than it is at hearing voice. Perhaps the distortion would be more noticeable if I ever heard people speaking at 100% to begin with...
