Refer to http://uqm.stack.nl/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Gendiscuss;action=display;num=1041898837;start= for the old timer's responce to this question.

Here, here. Speaking as a veteran, I of course I've seen every topic already. However, Lukipela, did you let the newbies talk it talk it out a bit before busting in your 2 cents. You know, you've done this before in other threads. If you're tired of not having anything new to read here, then take your ball and go play somewhere else.
I'm not saying that to be rude to you, Luk. I'm saying that because you've been quite rude to every other newbie on this board. We need the newbies. UQM is not an exclusive club. We need a constant flow of new blood to the fanbase or we will never see a UQM sequel, and you don't want that do you? Go easier on all the new guys and if you're tired of the same old rehashed, ignore the thread and it'll fall off the screen like every other dumbarce topic we've had so far.

Heh. My apologies if this seems offensive to you guesst, but it just struck me as highly amusing....

Old timers response? Seems very much like what I was refering to once upon a time...

Leave the new topics alone old timer ;)

Now, now. My responce was not meant to proscribe the newbies from making an old thread. Just to give the newbies something to read, maybe give them some ideas.

But, no. I don't find it offensive, luk. I feel for all the s*&# I've given you, I deserve a little back. If I can't let these things roll off like water on a duck's back, then I shouldn't put myself in the line of fire, should I?

True, true. Everyone has to take a bit of flak every now and then. and it's only on the net anyway, so i doubt very many of us take it seriously.

Speaking of flak, has anyone seen Omni-Samna in a while? It's ages since he last posted, and I'm beginning to miss his sarcasm...

Well, didn't Omni-Kun post once a few weeks ago and then disappear again?

Here's my top 4:

1) Planescape: Torment
2) Sacrifice
3) Homeworld
4) Starcraft

There many, many others worth mentioning, but I couldn't really get myself to number them.

I was reading the old post and I had a couple responses, probably for old timers (does matticus still post here?)  But some glaring omissions I thought of:

The Kings Quest and Wing Commander Series
Master of Magic!

And didn't *anybody* else LOVE Ultima 8?  Maybe it was because I played it first, but after I did I couldn't stand 7 (go isometric!)

Anyway, I know I'm preaching to the choir but they just don't make games like they used to--not enough attention to detail in the plot and universe, too much attention to graphics and flash.  The last game that blew me away was Baldur's Gate 1, and 2 was such a disappointment to me ultimately--less exploring and mystery in the plot, more GODSWORD +30 dungeon hacking.  And the last game before *that* was Heroes of Might and Magic 2--another glaring omission!  Of course perhaps you all are more sci-fi and less fantasy, a little less country, a little more rock-n-roll.  Ahem--just had to reminisce.

Lol Megagun, Space Federation, really?

I honestly thought I was the only person that ever played that game, lol!

(Oh yes, I really liked it too :) )

Out of curiousity, anybody every played Independence War 2?  I just got it a few days ago (best $5 I spent in ages, thank you EB superbargain rack).  Amazing game....was almost even better, but you can see where the marketing people made them dumb it down.  Fortunately, you can undumb it pretty easily.

Dune 2
Duke Nukem 3d
Space Quest games
Warcraft II
Starcraft
Civilization 1 & 2
Half-life

They really don't make them like they used to though, really great games are few and far between. Most games nowadays it seems like it takes them sooo long to get those really cool graphics engines... that they forget about concentrating on gameplay.

I miss the "era" of adventure gaming and humerous games like Space quest, starcon2, duke nukem 3d.

I wish I could get my hands on I-War 2.

Anyone has an opinion on how it compares to Freelancer?

A few other favorites:  Arcanum, Fallout I and II, Privateer II, Chrono Trigger.

Wow! I didn't think anyone but me actually heard of MoM! It was one of the only knock-offs I really liked. I've been looking for it for ages (the new "Age of Wonders" games just don't do it for me...). If anyone here knows where I can get it, and get it working, I'd be eternaly greatful (not the Spathi version, the Umgah one...  ;D).

Title: Re: favorite games other than Star Control?

Master of Orion!
And Privateer 1, Master of Magic, System Shock 2 (I never really did play System Shock 1, since I was young and it was creepy), Thexder 2, Fallout 2, One Must Fall 2097, Death Rally ... and from the so called new games Civilization 3, Max Payne and Baldur's Gate (first one, not Shadows of Amn).

Master of Orion kicks the bottoms.

Title: Re: favorite games other than Star Control?
Post by: Kohr-Ah_Primat on May 25, 2003, 09:36:47 am
And it (Master of Orion) allows you to play a race of sillicon based crystalline creatures, as well as a race of female blue-skinned psychics and a race of pterodactyl people who are skilled in star combat! Not to mention a race of warlike cat creatures that specialize in military conquest of other races, a sturdy dog-like race which excels in hand-to-hand combat and whose leader is sometimes named something that rhymes with 'Chewbacca', and the human race, the only one which can ever become a Federation--- whose leader who is both bald and is a master diplomat!

Oh, and the biggest and most intimidating ship that you can build is a giant spherical one called a "Doom Star" and the biggest weapon you can mount on it is a giant laser that you can use to destroy planets with!

Haven't played any new games, really..
Practically only game I play currently is VGA Planets. (Computer players always have some flaws, human opponent's is the way to go!)
My all-time favourites also include:
Civilization, Master of Orion, Colonization, X-Wing, Nethack, One Must Fall 2097, Heroes of Might & Magic 1-3 & Slicks 'n Slide.
The first Star Control's full game was imo very nice, at least with a (good) human opponent. I'd really like to see a re-release of it as well, with network play. Maybe after UQM 1.0 is released, some capable programmers could make one? Petty please.

Title: Re: favorite games other than Star Control?
Post by: SuperFunRom on May 26, 2003, 05:37:52 am
oh yeah, I just remembered, another one that nobody is mentioning--I actually liked Dune 1 also--it almost reminds me of a rudimentary star control a bit, a story tied in with flying from place to place to get and manage resources and building alliances along the way unti you are strong enough to fight the big bad guy at his big battle station whom you have known about all along.

As far as a copy of Master of Magic--I have a working copy installed on my computer, I wonder if I just saved it to disks if that would be a "working copy"--but since its old you have to mess around with extended memory and all that other stuff--I guess you all already know all about that.

This place is great~ its crazy how all you old time gamers hang around here.

I know, and I'm only 21, but not all of our age cohort was productively involved, busy blasting through games when they were young.  Actually my fondest memories are of being like 6 (this is going to make some of you feel a bit older I suspect) and watching my cousin play all his Sierra quest games, and bugging the heck out of him pointing out things he could do, especially when he was stuck and I was right, I would get pushed out of the room pretty quick.  I think my first inkling of "sex" or something *improper* between men and women was when he wouldn't let me watch him play leisure suit larry.  On that subject--if you really like the humor of Duke Nukem 3d you might like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a lot of goofy humor, and a lot of adult humor too.

Just thought of something...

Have you ever played Lavamind's trilogy of weird business sims:  Gazillionaire, Zaplitalism, and Profitania?

Definitely some of my favorites.

Now if they can just combine the economic models created by Lavamind with a space sim like I-War or Freelancer it would be one hell of a game.

OK...I'll bite.

Obviously SCII is in the running, since it's the only one I'm still playing today. I do tend to like separating my games into PC and console camps (just 'cause I'm a segregationist I guess :) ).

PC (No particular order - well, except alphabetical ;))
Archon
Bioforge
Counterstrike (even though I suck)
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Fallout 1&2
I-War
The Last Express
Lost Vikings
Master of Magic
Paganitzu
Planescape:Torment
Secret of Monkey Island 1-4
Starflight
TES : Daggerfall
TES: Morrowind
Tetris
Ultima V
Ultima Underworld 1&2
X-Com

Console - Mainly PS2, some PSOne
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature
Ico
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Rez
Silent Hill 1& 2
Shadow of Memories
Sheep Dog 'n Wolf
Soul Edge/Soul Blade
Space Channel 5 1&2

Sorry for the long post. But I thought it was interesting that my console favs were very different from my PC picks, which tend to be quite darker (well, except for Silent Hill on PS2/PS1).

And I hate that Ikaruga and Super Monkey Ball are Gamecube only, as I'll never buy a cube, but want to play those games desperately...

Take a look, Death999.

Has anyone ever played other TFB games?  Do you like them?  Is anyone of them as good as SC2?

I want to get my hands on a  few of them.

Title: Re: favorite games other than Star Control?
Post by: guesst on May 29, 2003, 04:35:04 am
The only other TFB game that I've played is Unholy War. I own it and find it ok. Some of the story aspects (the unseen little boy who maintains the killer tank robots, the bit about a quicksilver and angel having a child together, etc) were enough to keep the game interesting. However the graphics are such that the backgrounds are as colorful as the characters and tend to make it hard to see them. Overall, I liked it but couldn't really play it for very long. If it were to ever be re-done with updated graphics on the PC it'd be really cool.

LOL! although I do think it's strange that people would bring up Space Channel 5 and not Harvest Moon (at least Ulala has a hot electric orange miniskirt).

Like I said, there is a huge dichotomy in my PC vs console tastes. Dark, gritty games on PC (Fallout, Planescape) vs generally brighter, happier games on the PS2 ( the aforementioned Space Channel 5, Harvest Moon, Sheep Dog 'n Wolf). 'Course, Silent Hill throws that theory completely out the window.

I think in the end, I like games that dare to be different. Maybe I'm just a jaded old "been there, done that" S.O.B., but I appreciate the creative spark that goes into something like The Last Express, Rez or Planescape. And I also like games that are lovingly constructed, like Ico, and especally Star Control 2.

The last thing I want to buy is another FPS where you play a tough space marine armed with a shotgun, rocket launcher and railgun-equivalent. Maybe Half-Life 2 will change my mind on this, but I'm pretty damned sure that Doom 3 won't.

Imagine being a video graphic's creator who had to model those 3-d skirts everthing underneith it. Man, that's gotta suck.

Of course all artists are pervs anyways. (Tounge in cheek. I'm an artist, too.)

As I remember correctly, there was a gallup, if you might say that, on a forum. Suprisingly many of all mentioned Star Control 2, Master of Orion and System Shock, then of course there are these uncivilizied barbarians who play only "Guage" and CS. Make them pay .....
