Woo! SC2 music and a astro-lecture on my b-day in my home-town in my old university! Oh, but I won't be anywhere NEAR L.A. for the next two months. =( Phooey.

And I wanted go see Bill Nye and listen to Star Control Hyperspace music =/

A fellow Bruin! How cool! Smiley

It's too bad I rarely ever get to see L.A. any more ever since I moved to Houston about two years ago. I really miss it there.

3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Orbit Remix on: May 04, 2003, 12:01:06 am
Real nice! I'm looking forward to the complete remixed soundtrack. Aren't there two other planet orbit themes in the 3DO version? I'm assuming so, because UQM plays all three.

4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Ever DREAMED about a sequel to UQM? on: January 13, 2003, 09:25:47 pm
Call me crazy, but I did! In my dream last night, I was playing a sequel to UQM where the alliance races didn't like the captain and the Sol system was patrolled by a bunch of different ships just to make sure that the captain didn't get to Earth. If the captain went there, the Utwig pretty much repeated what the Ur-Quan drone warned about in UQM, but attacked as well.

While I was playing this sequel and enjoying my dream, I was hanging out with the TFB gods!

I wish I never woke up! Smiley

5  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / What other favorites do UQM fans have? on: January 07, 2003, 04:20:37 am
Hi all,

As a long-time player of SC2 and UQM, I must say that this is one of my top three favorite games of all time. The others are Final Fantasy VII and the original Metroid for the NES.

What other favorites do you all have?

Thanks,

6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Re: Win32 build error on 12/31 CVS on: January 01, 2003, 05:32:11 am
I'm indeed using VC 6, which AFAIK doesn't include SHFolder.LIB. I'll try building again with VC 7.

Another possible option is to use the LoadLibrary function to load the appropriate DLL into memory (shell32.dll or shfolder.dll, depending on the OS) and use the GetProcAddress function to export the SHFolderGetPathA symbol. This works similarly to a Visual Basic "Declare" statement. I don't have a patch handy (since I won't be able to have time to implement it) but this approach might do the trick.

7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Win32 build error on 12/31 CVS on: January 01, 2003, 01:06:18 am
Hi all,

I encountered the following build error using MSVC++ on Win32 to build today's CVS (12/31):

Quote

Linking...
dirs.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _SHGetFolderPathA@20
../../uqm.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals

I did some research on the SHGetFolderPath function and it turns out to be Windows 2000-specific (and probably exists on XP as well). However, the older Win32 platforms supply this function in SHFolder.DLL in the system folder. I couldn't find the corresponding LIB file for this DLL so I wasn't able to build this version of UQM.

Thanks,

8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Some project that looks similar in spirit to UQM on: December 20, 2002, 12:19:52 am
Hi all,

I stumbled across this project that looks similar in spirit to UQM:

http://www.starflight3.net/

I haven't played any of the Starflight games so I don't know how they are relative to the SC/UQM series. It does look like the creators of the Starflight games act as "consultants" to the Starflight 3 project, similar to how Fred & Paul oversee UQM.

Thanks,

9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / 3DO check: Invisible Ur-Quan fighters on: December 19, 2002, 11:25:46 pm
Hi all,

I haven't played the 3DO version, so I don't know if this is a bug or if it was always present. Whenever I fight an Ur-Quan Dreadnought using a Spathi Eluder, I am sometimes unable to see the Ur-Quan fighters. My guess is that the code used to scale the objects in the melee screen sometimes erases objects that are very small.

I am using yesterday's (12/18/2002) CVS build on Win32.

Thanks,

10  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Text to speech on: December 18, 2002, 08:35:56 pm
Hey all,

A really weird but cool idea (possibly after 1.0) would be to incorporate text-to-speech so that the aliens can call you by whatever name you specify in the game config. I don't know of any opensource text-to-speech engines though...

I can just imagine that this game will have a lot of fan-based sideprojects once 1.0 is released. I can't wait!  Smiley

11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Is this the same StarControl ??? on: December 18, 2002, 08:02:42 pm
The game that you are thinking about is Star Control 1. This rerelase (The Ur-Quan Masters) is NOT the same game. It is a remake of its sequel -- Star Control 2 -- where you are in charge of forming alliances with aliens and saving the universe from Ur-Quan domination.

I haven't really played the full game of Star Control 1, but I totally love Star Control 2 and this remake. If you haven't played it before, you will be in for a treat.

12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / 3D planet rendering in the latest CVS on: December 14, 2002, 08:40:12 am
Hi all,

First off, I would like to thank those who gracefully provided the latest Windows EXE snapshot of the latest CVS build. I am playing this version and thorougly enjoying it. Also, I don't want to criticize any of the programmers...you all deserve a pat on the back for bringing this awesome port to us! Thank you so much again for making this historic game available to all of us!

Anyway, my concern is with the 3D planet rendering code. I'm sure there will be changes to it, as this isn't the final version, but I liked the original PC planet renderer better. The renderer in this release doesn't seem to have as much of a "3D" feel and the surface doesn't seem to my discerning eye to be as perfect of a sphere as the original code was.

That's just a minor rant for an otherwise perfect port....keep up the good work!

13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Building the source code with Cygwin? on: December 12, 2002, 07:09:54 pm
Hi all,

I'm interested in building the CVS code with Cygwin on the Win32 platform, but before I begin, I'd like to know if anyone else has tried this. If so, is there anything I need to keep in mind, other than downloading the required libraries?

If the code doesn't yet build with Cygwin, are there any plans to do so in a future release (even if it is after 1.0)?

Thanks!

14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / 3DO music files? on: December 06, 2002, 05:10:14 am
Hi all,

I tried probing around in CVS but couldn't find the sound files that comprised the remixed 3DO music. I tried looking into sc2/comm/* to no avail. Where can I find these files in the game directory tree?

Thanks!

15  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Technical Issues / Minor graphical glitch - somewhat hard to spot on: December 02, 2002, 08:11:06 am
Hi all,

I reported this bug before the forums went belly-up, but it wasn't in the updated TODO and Known Bugs lists. I'll note it again here for reference.

On the upper-right-hand corner of the screen, where the flagship is drawn together with the ships in the player's fleet, the modules that are drawn inside the flagship are off by one pixel to the left.

Thanks,
