The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Sc2 rights?

so what you're saying is that unless whoever gives up the rights to UQM it isn't possible.
is it not possible to make a sequel with the things that you could use because (though it would probably take alot of work) if it brought Starcon back into production business...whatever that would be WELL worth it. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. UQM is an open-source game, and it is expected that it will also be open-content eventually. It is entirely possible, and legal, to make your own sequel. See TimeWarp as an example.

My favorite technical report: SUBJECT: Talking Pet Lifeform. DATA: This creature is physiologically identical to the so-called Ur-Quan `Talking Pet' with one notable exception. It is highly intelligent, and evidences strong psychic capabilities. Initial AIQR tests rated it well above human super-genius though immediately after we made this shocking assessment its scores dropped into the normal-sub-normal range. Interviews with the subject have shown it to be cooperative though a class-IV pan-species psychological profile places the creature far into the Furtive-Hateful domain. There were also some disturbing incidents where we talked about roses, daisies, and other pretty flowers! SUMMARY: Everything's okay! Nothing to worry about with this cuddly little guy. Not one thing!

My favorite conversation between the Captain and the Talking Pet: Come on, we're friends! Tell me about the scope of your psychic powers!
Captain, I don't think you meant to ask about my powers. -<DIDN'T YOU MEAN TO ASK ABOUT FLOWERS?>-
Yes - Dnyarri - I - wish - to - know - about - flowers.
Flowers are beautiful, and smell nice. Now be a good human and -<LEAVE ME ALONE!>-

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Make "Dill-Rats" Official!

I doubt that anyone will re-record all of the Ilwrath dialogue, and yet it is a shame not to hear them say 'dwe' and 'warship'. How about this as a compromise: The text of future dialogues can be changed to read 'dwe', 'yuubuu', 'warship', and 'dill-rats' where appropriate, but the voice will stay the same. We might be able to get away with it except in the case of 'yuubuu', as the other ones sound very similar to their spoken counterparts.

Somewhat related: If I were to paint new art slides (or 'sprites') for UQM, would i have to worry about palette? I heard UQM can't use the slides cuz of legal issues. Where did you hear that? I thought they couldn't use the 3do cutscenes because of legal issues, not the slides. Oh, and on that note- does anybody know how to get UQM to display the intro and ending slideshows?

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Aftermath

Glad you're enjoying yourself! It's starting to cool off here in California, but stick around till next summer for some great weather and good times.
And back on topic- great work on Aftermath! The graphics are fantastic. I love how you've blended SC2-style navigation and combat with SC1-style planetary strategy and resource managment. I have only a couple of minor grievances: - The Arilou ships have momentum. - I'm not quite sure exactly what it is, but the controls seem a little bit awkward. - It's in sore need of a savegame feature. - There should be a way to disable friendly fire. I keep hitting my fleet when I'm mining. - There should probably be some sort of threshold on asteroid size- after you've mined them down to a certain point they become little pebbles that are annoying to go track down. Other than that, it's a really fantastic piece of work. Congrats on the new job, and enjoy your stay in sunny California!

An Adult Swim special would probably only end up making fun of SC2 in a very childish, absurdist, random kind of way, the way Space Ghost Coast to Coast and its spinoffs make fun of the original Space Ghost cartoons. That may be the only realistic way to actually get something like SC2 on TV these days, but excuse me for not particularly wanting to see it (any more than people who are genuinely fans of the old Space Ghost cartoons are probably pleased by what SGC2C has done to the franchise's image). You have a point, but like you said, that would probably be the only way to get it on TV nowadays. Such a show would most likely offend the purists, but it could potentially appeal to a wider audience in terms of general viewing. Plus- it would be entertaining. Then again, I like SGC2C and you don't.

Whomever said that this should be an Adult Swim special was right on the mark. Cartoon may be the way to go- in fact, styling it like a toned-down version of Sealab would be pretty awesome. It would be great to watch the crew of the Vindicator travel the galaxy making fools out of themselves. Compared to the plot of the original, it would be hyperbolic, but such a show could easily find a new audience and stay on the air without being accused of ripping off B5 and ST. I just think that the humor of SC2 would be better amped up for a high school/college audience than toned down for the kiddies (or mainstream adult viewers).
