76  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What question about SC do you most want answer on: December 04, 2002, 01:30:16 pm
I'd like to know what happened to the Androsynth.

My theory on that (as most of mine do), comes from conversations with the Orz and Arilou.  The Arilou repeatedly reference parasitic extra-dimensional creatures and tell you that your ignorance of these creatures is the only thing that keeps them from noticing you.  Just in case there is any doubt on what that means (eating you), they emphasize that you do NOT want to be noticed.  In a different conversation, you learn that the Androsynth were becoming too inquisitive into areas of dimensional fatigue.  I gather from these facts that the Androsynth became conscious of other dimensions and disappeared, leaving the Orz in their place.  The only question that bugs ME about their fate is whether the Orz killed them to keep the rest of the Universe safe, or the Orz actually ate the Androsynth.  While replaying UQM, I did notice some veiled references to *dinners* (or something) the Orz were looking forward to.  Maybe they plan to eat the humans, too ?  But on the side of them killing the A-S to make the Universe safe, they get incriedibly furious when you ask too many questions, which holds to the 'stay ignorant for your own protection' side.  Either way - I think it was the Orz.

Well pretty much everyone THINKS (well we're almost certain, but i'm going to say that word just for effect) that the Orz killed them, but the point is to find out what really happened and the only way to find that out is from TFB. Anyway, if you talk with the Spathi they say something like this; "We think the Orz ate them. Well not really, that's just what we think." (the wording is completely off, but you get the general idea). So, I assume that could be true, (after all SCIII is based on real ideas by TFB) but then again they think the Precursers are big cowards. Wink

As for the Arilou I think they wanted you not to know, so you wouldn't change your DNA so that the Orz would want you/find creatures that can cause harm to you. After you ask if you were in for the same fate as the Androsynth the Orz say "You not like Androsynth. You are different. You are happy *campers*" or something like that. So, whatever the Arilou did to Human's DNA will keep us safe from them.

Oh and remember that TFB wanted us to not know if the Orz were going to backstab us in SCII, so they're most likly very nastly little things who only help you because it serves them (or so I believe).
77  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: no more spheres of influence? on: December 04, 2002, 12:53:19 pm
They shouldn't all disappear at once, though.  When the Kohr-ah do their thing, you'll be able to see a very clear and obvious path through the galaxy.  They'll actually move in a circle destroying each race as they go.  In fact, I'm pretty sure you can still win the game as long as there's at least one race still alive.

Well as I said in another thread the Zot-Fot-Pik die first and then you see most of the Battle Tralls spheres disapear BEFORE the Korh-Ah move to them (the Vux for example just disapear). Then they move up to Traddash space, over to Utwig/Supox space, down to Yehat space, and then you have but a short time before you see the sphere reach Earth (you can still win after they kill the Yehat). Once it does the Korh-Ah will explain that all sentient life in this region of space has been destoryed and that you lose. I remember this because when I first played UQM I was playing around and so the Korh-Ah went on their rampage before I could even get the Ultron, so I sat in Sol and watched the sphere move.
78  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: melnorme on: December 04, 2002, 12:44:23 pm
I love the Melnorme!  They're mysterious, funny, and generally fascinating.  (And also they have the coolest music IMO, but I don't want to start one of those debates.)

As mentioned, they are shrewd.  I mean, even giving free fuel is good business sense.  After all, they know you're going to end up doing a lot of business with them.  If you die, they don't get that business, do they?  Smiley

Yeah, but if they give it away for free you'll abuse their kindness (they made their life around trading, so they must've incountered hundreds of races who have tried to pulled thousands of tricks on them). This way they get all the credits they want, because they know you have no choice but to buy from them.  Grin
79  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Favourite ship on: December 04, 2002, 12:37:11 pm
Ooh, I used to play this game against my sister all the time.  We'd crowd around the keyboard and jam away...hehehe.  I got very very good with the small ships, being that A) The big ships were too obviously powerful, B) speed can be more effective than sheer hitting power, and C) I'm a perverse freak.

I came to really value those little ships, especially the ones with a reputation for being "different".  Like the Umgah Drone: looks tubby and slow, but my sis would often yelp a protest when I zipped backwards with my antimatter cone on and toasted her Dreadnought!

Other favorites: Ariloulaleelay Skiff (can take out a Kohr-Ah Marauder with some patience); ZoqFotPik Stinger ("Yeah!  The tonguing is the best part!");  Orz Nemesis (can this really be called a "little" ship?);  Supox Blade (moving in all directions is AWESOME!); Pkunk Fury ("Jerk!  Dodo!");  and, last but definitely not least, Shofixti Scout (BLAM!).

I used to throw those ships against my sister's fleet of larger ones, including Chmrr and Kzer-Za, and come out...well, not always victorious, but at least with a large chunk of her fleet reduced to radioactive dust.

Oh, I am SO looking forward to this game being fully updated and ported to modern platforms...I'm imagining her look of utter shock when I show her my latest "new" game...

You're so right...Small ships are the greatest. One time I was playing with my father and I decided to give him an advantage, so I crashed some of my bigger ships and my Skiff into a planet and somehow in the end he had a fully crewed Ur-Quan Dreadnought and I had a Shofixti scout and I was able to win without blowing him up (bad player that he might of been that was the hardest battle I ever fought).   Grin And in SCII I'll take a Traddash Tourch to either Ur-Quan ship anyday. Hell I'd take it over an Utwig. With a little work you can force him to waste his shields and then use your Secondary Weapon to slaughter him.  Grin

The only small ship that i can't take is the Zot-Fot-Pik. Too close range a battles for my taste.
80  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Time limit? on: December 04, 2002, 12:26:29 pm
Well the problem with adding years for beginners and taking away years for advanced players is explainning the overall SC timelime (in future versions of SCII you need to know what year the war ended). But, anyway, I died the first time I ever played (thanks to the Korh-Ah). But luckly I made two saved files. The first, was my main and the second was years before. So, I started playing the second file and easy beat the game. In fact, I beat the whole game in 3 days, (including the time I spent being killed) so making it easier would, in my mind, mess up the game.
81  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What question about SC do you most want answer on: December 04, 2002, 12:09:15 pm
It's not off-topic; the thread is "what question about sc do you most want answered?" Well you are answering my SC questions. Cheesy

So damn, I killed the Shofixti. My bad.  :-/

Well I was aiming on the side of questions that TFB left for us (ie: What does it mean when the melnorme bridge changed colors?). Not how to do a certain thing, but I'm always happy to answer questions about the game. Smiley
82  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What question about SC do you most want answer on: December 04, 2002, 11:42:20 am
We're getting off topic, but you need to show them a Shofixti before they will revolt.
83  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: What question about SC do you most want answer on: December 04, 2002, 11:06:39 am
They will join the Yehat and are thus saved if you start the Yehat revolution and get to the final battle before the Pkunk reach them (if you need more time you can turn them back by saying two different things).
84  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: no more spheres of influence? on: December 04, 2002, 09:34:52 am
i have lost then.

all of the spheres of influences have dispeared. I had no idea that there was a time limit to this game. Oh well, off i go to try again. thanks.

I have been attacked many times by the big black khor ah.

i'll try again then,

Yeah the time limit is annoying the first time you play (you want to explore everything, but you can't). That's how I died the first time I ever played, but then I picked up from an old save and the game went by very quickly. And now, that I've played this game more times then I can count, I can easily finish all goals with plenty of time to spare. Although, I do find myself being killed about 10 times (by ships, not the time thing) before I can finish and am forced to use my saved file to "cheat" death. But, then that's what keeps this game interesting.
85  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Favourite ship on: December 04, 2002, 09:26:37 am
Why is it that most people's favorite ship seems one from SCII? Oh well, I played SCI for years before even hearing about SCII and SCIII, so my favorite has been and always will be the Arilou Skiff. With it I can beat every single Hierarchy ship in a row, given that the computer is set on Standard (anything higher and the Spathi ship becomes too much of a challenge). And given that I don't make a stupid mistake I can beat any Hierarchy ship on a one on one battle (sometimes I need to get warmed up before I can take out that Spathi ship though). It doesn't matter if it's a computer or a human (mind you most people who I get to play SC aren't very good pilots Wink ) Then of course, when I win, there's the victory dance, to insure another win, where I make the Skiff look like it's chasing it's tail (I do this when the ditty is playing).  Grin
86  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: no more spheres of influence? on: December 04, 2002, 09:11:08 am
The Korh-Ah are the black Ur-Quan (a.k.a. the bad guys). If they win you should go back to an old saved file or simply start over. Most people lose their first time, it's no big deal. But, anyway, the Korh-Ah won't win until sometime in the year 2160, so unless that's what you're at you still have some time. Although, I don't think that's what your talking about...How many spheres disapeared? Just one or lots of them? If it was just one then you're talking about the Spathi. After a certain amount of time they will disapear. *Hint*Check their homeworld.
87  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: no more spheres of influence? on: December 04, 2002, 08:09:30 am
You don't see the sphere of influences until you are told where the homeworld is or find it for yourself. For example; the Spathi sphere will apear after you speak with the Spathi on Pluto. Oh and just a suggestion, talk to the Starbase Commander about old races. He tells you what solar system some of the orginal races live in. Then, if you go there, talk to that race, and find that they have NOT moved a sphere will apear.
88  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Pkunk Fury restoration on: December 04, 2002, 07:00:45 am
heh. I love the Pkunk. If you're far away from home and are almost out of crew, on your flagship, take all crew away from your Pkunk ship and save. Then find someone to fight. Make the Pkunk die and if i restores itself escape from battle, if not close SCII and try again. Then you have yourself 7 new crew members.  Grin I used to do that all the time before I figured out which quasi-space portal led back to Sol.
89  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Tedious...Tedious... on: December 04, 2002, 06:54:51 am
One thing I'd like to point out to wake (out of pity more than anything) is that if you're looking for the Ilwrath homeworld in the Ilwrath sphere of influence you're wasting your time. The Ilwrath do have a homeworld, but their sphere of influence has slightly moved from it for reasons outlined in the plot.

Yes, but the spear on the map (map that came in box not the one on the game) is the same as it was 20 game years ago. So the sphere, on the map I told him too get from The Pages of Now And Forever, will show where the Ilwarth used to live and so if you go there, you'll find their homeworld.
90  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Star Control 1 with SC2's ships on: December 04, 2002, 06:45:03 am

Hmm... the strategy part of Star Control doesn't seem very complicated to me and I believe it wouldn't be that hard for an able programmer to code. Perhaps after the current project is done our heroes could try to complete this next undertaking.

I'd love if that were done. SCI is what made me such a SC fan. For years I playied it without even knowing about SCII or SCIII so, as you can expect, SCI is very important to me. The only problem is, like Chad said the Genesis version slows down the Melee, and if want to play my PC version I have to do it on my old Tandy computer (the sound and pictures get messed up if i try on one of my newer computer) and being so old it takes forever to load, send out ships, ect. Plus I have to carry the heavy thing out of my closet everytime I want to play it. Ugh.
