31  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Should I sell all of my PDAs and grab a Nokia N810? on: November 14, 2007, 12:36:57 am
I normally wouldn't even think about doing that, but guess what I found for these little devices?

I'm tired of waiting in the hope that a Palm OS 5 or Windows Mobile port will arrive, because it probably won't unless I somehow gain the skills to make it happen.

They also have stellar Web browsing capabilities(supposedly even better than Opera Mobile 8.65 for WM, especially where YouTube is concerned), have multimedia functions integrated, and even have a Palm OS 5-er, Garnet OS VM available!

Of course, I've spent a lot of money on Windows Mobile software that I'd hate to waste, but this IS the greatest game of all time we're talking about here!

EDIT: Wait, 450+ US$? What the hell am I thinking? I could just get a Tablet PC for that much, which would run UQM and a lot more! On the other hand, Tablet PCs aren't pocketable, which makes them rather poor music players...
32  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Poll: Clash of the Titans: Star Control versus StarFlight on: November 14, 2007, 12:31:58 am
I like both, but Star Control II still remains my greatest game of all time.

Let's elaborate on Starflight first.
-I think it has a better opening scenario. (Your society has just rediscovered the secret of space travel and is reaching for the stars once again, only to find that their homeworld is in grave danger.)
-I prefer the ship component system. (Each component can be seperately upgraded AND damaged, and each component has a distinct purpose. It just feels more realistic than SC2, or maybe just better.)
-I also like how your crew and their skills contribute to your overall effectiveness, and also the potential problems you can face should one of them bite the dust. (In SC2, crew is hardly personal-they just act as a strange measure of ship integrity.)
-Finally, the planetary exploration aspect of Starflight feels better-the landscapes are much larger, and it seems to actually matter when you find a ruin or something(and you don't find a whole lot of ruins in SC2).

So, why do I prefer SC2? It's all about your fellow sentients. I never associated with the Starflight races like I did the Star Control ones, likely for the following reasons:

-Each and every one of the Star Control races have a distinct charm which I never felt in a Starflight race. It's hard to describe, but you understand perfectly when you interact with them.
-In all versions of Starflight, to my knowledge, all the ships look the same unless you take a peek at the picture you get after scanning one. This breaks my suspension of disbelief. Star Control II obviously does not have this problem.
-The SC2 races have their own unique font for subtitles, as well as music(and voiceovers in the 3DO and UQM versions). Starflight has no voiceovers(obviously), little music(that which I did hear did not interest me much, likely due to their simplistic nature; this is going by the Amiga version and not the Genesis remake), and the same font for all races.
-Oh, yeah, and Star Control II has MUCH better music. On the other hand, Starflight was originally developed with IBM PCs with beepy, bloopy, super-suck-ass speakers in mind, and not a real computer like the Amiga, Atari ST, or even the bloody C64, and thus I shouldn't really be holding this against it.

Now, if someone would combine the best elements of both into a game that also borrowed from Independence War, Freespace, and Battlecruiser/Universal Combat(in other words, a space "sim" with Newtonian physics that focused on exploring planets and talking with/fighting aliens instead of just blowing stuff up)to make the best(space adventure and exploration)game ever....
33  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Retro Remakes Top 100 Games on: July 22, 2007, 10:06:13 pm
No Starflight or SC2. NO STARFLIGHT OR SC2!

I'm not saying that they should always be in the top 10 or anything-hell, I would have settled for SC2 at 100-but they are TOTALLY ABSENT FROM THAT LIST!

Needless to say, I'm quite *frumple* about this. I think we ought to start cleansing some filth right about now...
34  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Retro Remakes Top 100 Games on: July 22, 2007, 12:00:31 am
Ah, I see. It's just a tad misleading when they call it "The Retro Remakes Top 100".
That's what I was thinking initially as well.

Though, remake or not, UQM had better end up in that top 10...
35  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Retro Remakes Top 100 Games on: July 21, 2007, 10:52:31 pm
It's a general game list, and not just one for remakes.

That said, it's nice to see other obscure games like Exile(though I'm suprised they used the BBC Micro version and not one of the Amiga remakes)and Speedball 2(Wait, they didn't say "Ice cream! Ice cream!"? Oh well.), as well as classics like Lemmings(I remember playing a bit of the DOS version of it).

And, on other notes, I think I saw Sensible Soccer twice, and Exile bumped down to 90. Also, if there's going to be a few Sensible Software games, WHERE IS CANNON FODDER?
36  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Retro Remakes Top 100 Games on: July 21, 2007, 08:49:59 pm
Here's the list.

So far, it's got a nice balance of classic and modern games.

However, there is absolutely NO mention of Starflight or Star Control II.

But 9-1 have yet to be shown, so there's hope...
37  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Discuss: Should SC1 be a download for the Wii virtual console? on: July 19, 2007, 08:46:48 pm
There's MSX Virtual Console games in Japan? Awesome!

That means that we can get MSX Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for download!

Don't forget to don the Mask of Valor and Derring-Do before.
That one's perfect!

Now, I set off to conquer the universe...with FWIFFO PLUSHIES!
39  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Anyone got a Spathi avatar? (Bonus if animated.) on: July 09, 2007, 06:00:51 am
In the last few minutes of my personal ice cream cake day(which also means that I just turned 17-oh, wait, scratch that, it's 12:00 A.M. EST now), I figured I'd drop by this place again and humbly request something to use as an avatar to show off what I believe is the greatest game of all time on all the other forums I visit. (Yeah, the nostalgia factor from System Shock 2 wore off a bit, and so I swapped their places on my personal greatest games ever list.)

Naturally, Fwiffo and the rest of those crazy Spathi are my fave characters from the game, so I'd like a Spathi avatar. (Especially if it's animated to show off that creepy eye.) Even better if I see something like "Hello, Hunams!" at the bottom. Those last two parts aren't really necessary, but I'd still like something that shows off that distinct eye within a 80x80 space.

So, why am I asking this just now? Let's just say that after constantly seeing another poster on another forum I frequent use an Ariloulaleelay of Fayalarafali avatar, I figured that I'd follow his lead somewhat.
40  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Serious lack of Star Control-like games on: May 27, 2007, 06:02:04 am
I'm also aching for another Starflight-or-SC2-like game, but no one seems interested in making one.

I'd give a shot at it myself, but it would relate to those two games mostly in the adventuring-in-an-unknown-universe sense. Basically, it would be something like an amalgation of Starflight, Star Control II, Independence War, and Battlecruiser/Universal Combat, and probably even more.

If I went into detail, though, you'd probably have the longest post this forum has ever seen, so I'll spare you the hassle.

For now, though, I guess I'll have to play Independence War II or something like that for my space adventuring needs...after I finish another game that I'm currently occupied with.
41  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: If not Palm OS, then how about a port for "The Dark Side"(Windows Mobile)? on: April 26, 2007, 12:41:19 am
Same with the Palm OS scene, huh?

Anyway, this Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK seems to be the first step to getting UQM ported. Next, I need to get that SDL code, and then I need the 0.6.2 source again. After that comes the hard part-rewriting and recompiling the code so that it works.

Oh, and where can I get the PSP version? Here, I can't D/L it all. (It's my friend with the PSP, not me, and I'd like him to experience the greatest game ever.)
42  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: You know you're addicted to Star Control when on: April 23, 2007, 11:30:23 pm
...When you see a green creature, a brown creature, and a blue creature all at once, and expect the green and the blue to bicker about pointless things while the brown one remains silent.

...The top of your gun shopping list reads "Hellbore Cannon".

...You can fully control a starship using only a directional pad or arrow keys and two to three buttons.

...Your favorite female costume involves blue skin coloring, a very skimpy outfit, and a knife.

...You encounter some teddy bear-like creature and go "It's The Ultimate Evil!!!" in that special Spathi voice.

...When looking for a talented doctor, you search for some weird, oddly-shaped meat blob with the crappiest ship in this sector of the galaxy.

...You think mowing the lawn is mass murder!

...When you hear the term "emo", you think of people wearing purple masks that only have holes for the eyes and purple robes.

...You think those "pterodactyls" were actually some sentient beings with a cowardly queen. As to what they were doing here...uplifting some primitive lifeform, perhaps?

...You think every corporate leader wears red, looks quite ugly, and dangles from chains.
43  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Your Nickname's Origin? on: April 23, 2007, 11:18:39 pm
When first coming up with an Internet alias, I found myself rather horrible at coming up with names.

Then, the idea struck: If I can't think of a name, why not go nameless? Disregard the irony of such a name for a moment.

I tacked on the "Player" bit to convery my gamer nature, though I think I'm about to dump it for "Fragger" since it sounds cooler to me.
44  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / If not Palm OS, then how about a port for "The Dark Side"(Windows Mobile)? on: April 23, 2007, 05:00:27 am
I've found a SDL port for WinCE, and Windows Mobile is a deriative of Windows CE(if the references to "Pocket PC" and "Windows Mobile 2003 SE" didn't make that clear), so a Windows Mobile port could work out.

So, why am I asking for a Windows Mobile port now? I managed to capitalize on a great eBay deal for a Dell Axim X50v, currently one of my most prized possessions. It has a PXA270 that clocks up to 624 MHz without XCPUScalar, a VGA screen, 64 MB of RAM, and an Intel 2700G graphics accelerator that can be utilized using OpenGL-ES. Surely, it's powerful enough to run the greatest game ever if properly optimized(for instance, conversion of floating-point to integer, since XScales and most other ARM CPUs don't support floating-point in hardware).

Mind you, I'm not ignoring Palm OS now, but it seems that between my X50v and my T|C, the former is more likely to get a port for this game. It has a SDL port(don't know if it supports threading, though), it has the hardware, and it doesn't slow down every time I press a button(that's just a T|C-specific issue, so it doesn't affect all Palms).

I should probably locate a development toolkit for WM, though. There's CodeWarrior and prc-tools for Palm OS, but I don't know what's used to develop for WM devices. (I lost my previous Palm OS development environment in a reformat I had to do recently, though...at least that means I get to start out with a clean slate this time, since setting Cygwin and prc-tools and everything else up was so confusing.)

I've searched these forums before, and I'm not the first to suggest a WM port. I don't see why a PSP or GP2X can play this game while a WM or Palm OS 5 device can't, so how about we rectify this issue?

Oh, and when your car/truck/plane/whatever runs out of fuel, you can count on some color-obsessed person to come sell you more fuel. Always.
