1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Rogue Spathi? on: October 09, 2006, 12:10:35 am
I'm sorry.  It's just....after around  the ten thousandth time, I've wanted to start slashing throats whenever someone brings them up =)  That has to be the single most asked question on this forum, for some reason...which  I just find odd, since they're only mentioned once as an aside.

Jesus H. Christ.  What is with everyone's facination with the Black Spathi Squadron?  It's Favor text.  FLAVOR TEXT!

(Sorry.  It's just...ugh.  EVERYONE brings it up.)

4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Can someone tell me what happened in SC3? on: September 09, 2006, 06:14:49 pm
The whole eternal ones thing really WAS executed very poorly.  Done right, it could have given the game a nice H.P. Lovecraft feeling to it and would have made the game much creepier.

Some of the new aliens had the potential to be pretty cool (the K'tang were funny at times), if the developers bothered to actually...you know...DEVELOPE them.  As it was, almost all the dialogue was directly ripped from SC2.  In a paraphrased version.  I remember my first contact with the Harika consisted of an EXTREMELY disappointing "What do you want?"  First freakin' contact between two alien races, and THAT is the best the developers could come up with.

The new muppet look for the League races was also something that could have been very cool, but ended up sucking.  Syreen?  Sucked.  Ur-Quan?  Sucked.  Mycon?  Sucked.  Pkunk?  I kinda liked the new semi-dinosaur look.  Chmmr?  Err...really weird looking.

I will say this for SC3 though:  I think they did a good job with the Orz, both with their look and their voice.  Thats really about all I can praise though.

I dunno....three to five meters is *tiny* for a ship with multiple crew.  Hell, single pilot fighter jets are a lot bigger than that.  I always thought of a scout more along the lines of a Star Wars Assault Shuttle, whereas a Dreadnought would be around Star Destroyer size.

I have to agree with Data, Irregular Webcomic is a damn fine read.  I also like Legostar Galactica, although I only check it every month or so....it seems to read better that way.

Favorite voice -  Ur-Quan Kzer-Za (well, the talking pets I guess Tongue). The music + the voice is absolutely masterfully combined to make the player terrified, especially when you run into the drone for the first time. That deep, rumbling bass voice perfectly fits the race. I remember when I first got the sounds put in after playing SC2 w/ no sound for the longest time...I  had shivers down my spine when I heard the 'Quan music/voice combo from the drone for the first time. And the best part? It's still as terrifying today.
Even separate; the music has a "dictator" feel to it, and the voices by themselves are disheartening, to say the least. But mix them together, and voila, you've got a symphony of fear.

Man, I couldn't agree more with you here.  While I generally like the Precursor remixes a lot, I had to go in and delete the new Kzer-Za music.  It just doesn't fit them at all.
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Kohr - Ah Crew on: June 17, 2006, 01:53:55 am
lol, I defended the whole "robotic crew" idea for the very same reason =P

Honestly, the Kohr-Ah may be the warrior race, but since they're doing battle in capitol ships, I don't really see why they'd need to outnumber the Kzee-Za 42 to 1.  Maybe for ground battles where they'd incur massive casulties and would need extreme numbers on their side, but still...I don't see a 10 meter long caterpillar being too terribly effective in a ground war.  Talk about a massive target...
9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: And the two greatest games in the world are.... on: June 10, 2006, 06:24:02 pm
Honestly, I've never played a game by Black Isle that I didn't absolutely love.  Baldur's Gate and Fallout are easily the best RPG's I've ever played, and although I've never played Planescape: Torment, I'm sure it's also top notch.

I'm also a fan of the early Final Fantasy games....although I can never remember the numbers...I especially enjoyed the one with Kefka (three, I think) and the one released in Japan with Exdeath (although I heard people hated this one).  The only "modern" FF I really enjoyed was 9.

I'd also think the Silent Hill series deserves a mention, as well as Alone in the Dark.

As for most disappointing game, I'd go with Devil May Cry 2.  Loved the first, hated the second.

If there ARE indeed 42 Kohr-Ah per ship, a  Marauder would absolutely dwarf a Dreadnaught.

While the Syreen Call wouldn't affect a robotic crew, remember that the Captain of the ship is still an  Ur-Quan (who are extremely suceptible to psychic attack).  I'm guessing the Syreen could simply use their powers on the captain, who then orders his robotic crew out the air-lock  Grin
