1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: The Utwig and their masks on: January 31, 2007, 08:32:19 pm
They could put the new mask on first, then pull out the old one from underneath it... but surely Utwig mask etiquette, refined over centuries, would not resort to such a kludge.

I think they would have another mask: the Concealing Disguisement of Mask Substitution, to be worn while changing masks.  It would have plenty of space inside, and special doors at the top and bottom to allow the new mask to go in and the old one to go out.

Due to its immensely important function, it would be made of the finest materials, and be really difficult to manufacture.  This is why the Utwig are all still wearing the Mask of Ultimate Embarassment and Shame, even after they get the ultron back.  They can make most new masks fairly quickly, but the CDoMS can't be rushed.  And without it, they can't change and so are stuck with the Mask of Ultimate Embarassment and Shame.

This trick isn't very dirty, but if you have an RU shortage and a Credit surplus with the Melnorme, they are only too happy to give you 1610 fuel at a go.

Ah, the other fuel trick.  1 Rainbow World->500 credits->500 fuel->10000 RU

Here's a super melee trick.
Beauty and the Beast:   (I'll let you figure out which is which)
Use the Vux ship to limpet an enemy ship.   When you can't even see the ship any more because of all the green gunk on it, it is sufficiently limpeted.
Crash the Vux into the planet, then send in the Syreen to suck all the crew out of the helpless enemy ship. Grin

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of suitable victims.  Kohr-Ah will toast its own crew out of spite, Chmmr is effectively unlimpetable, even the puny Earthling can beat the Vux, etc...  The Spathi works quite well here, although getting the first few limpets on it is a pain.

The only information that you can only get from the ZFP is the location of the Syreen ships.  But Talana gives you a hint which narrows down the number of places you'd have to look, so you don't really need it.
4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Dirty tricks on: October 01, 2006, 11:00:03 pm
I've just discovered a new dirty trick:

Equip ship with 1 double-size fuel tank and 15 crew modules.  Fill up with crew.
Sell 250 crew to Druuge.
Sell remaining crew back at starbase

Profit:
500*25 - 750*3 = 10250 RU.  Plus whatever you bought.
Losses:
Hayes' approval.  Oh, and maybe your immortal soul as well.  Neither of which are needed to win.
Practicality:
Limited.  The fuel trick will cost less to set up, bring in more profit, and not make you a "heinous slave trader".

Also, you're then stuck with an expensive crew cost for the rest of the game.  There are ways round this - really tedious ways involving the Syreen ship...

Anyone else have any dirty tricks?

To Captain Smith (aka Utwigslayer) -

Nice job with the Chmrr! Shocked  I did not think that was possible.

Why did the Utwig not use its shield vs the Kohr-ah and Yehat?  The Kohr-ah in particular I have always thought of as Utwig food.

(And the Mycon battle was a bad case of AI stupidity - very nicely exploited though)

Another option exists on the fringes of druuge space...

And this option has the added advantage of getting you the Chmmr ships while the Spathi are still around.  Then you can go on a killing spree through Spathi space.  They are battle thralls after all...  Grin

Kohr-Ah.  Because they have some great lines:

"You have attacked us before, and we survived! You cannot defeat us. Submit!"
We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

"Is there anything we can do to make you stop the killing?"
If you eliminate all non-Ur-Quan sentient races, including yourselves
then we will stop.
We have made this offer before. No one accepts.

Their ships are pretty good too.

It's only by abusing the AI that you can survive fights with them at all.

Hmm, I've been winning a lot of fights which I really shouldn't, thanks to the AI.

Th worst AI stupidity I've seen is an  "Awesome" Cyborg Chenjesu vs a Chmmr, sending DOGI after DOGI, only to have them killed by the zapsats.  The Chenjesu has a really difficult task here, but doggies are not its best chance to win.  It will also send them after a totally-drained Utwig.  Duh...

For practising specific fights, it's quite helpful to create some new battle groups made up of lots just one kind of ship.  (And save them)  Here's some tips for beating the ships you have to deal with at the start of the game, in roughly increasing order of difficulty:

Orz vs Slylandro:
This is a stupid fight.  Run away and launch 4 marines.  The probe will go nuts trying to avoid the marines.  While it's doing that, it's not shooting at you, and the marines will get it eventually.

Earthling vs Vux:
Vuxen are fairly easy to kill with the Earthling.  All you have to do is keep your distance and fire missiles.  Unfortunately, the Vux will sometimes warp in right next to you and slag your ship before you can do anything.  There's not much you can do about this Sad

Spathi vs Ur-quan:
The puny Ur-quan Dreadnaught is helpless against the mighty Spathi.  Keep out of range, and when it launches fighters, fire BUTTs at them.  Or just fly around - the fighters will eventually hit asteroids and die.  To kill the main ship, you need to fire BUTTs from just out of its range, while it is chasing you.

Spathi vs Ilwrath:
The Ilwrath can be killed by almost anything with greater range and speed.  And that's just about every other ship in the game.  You can tell exactly where it is because it's always opposite you.  Thrust away from it until you're moving at about the same speed, then turn round and shoot.  The Spathi, ZokFotPik and Shofixti can kill it quite easily this way.  The ZoqFotPik's scatter gun is hard to miss with (well, hard to miss every single shot with, anyway)

Spathi vs Kohr-ah:
This is much harder than the Spathi vs green Ur-quan fight.  Run away from it, dodging the saw-blades and firing BUTTs.  Dodging the blades is the tricky part - it's best if the Kohr-ah is chasing you, because then you have much more time to react.  You can't outrun the blades, so if one is coming up behind you, turn!  It takes a long time to kill the Kohr-ah this way, because half your missiles will hit saw-blades or get F.R.I.E.D.  But it eventually goes down.
