1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Check out this shard. on: May 30, 2007, 03:34:54 pm
Thanks, a few people already are, the player base has grown steadily since it went online, average around 60 now. Few updates have been added, including new website, things are coming along nicely.

Haha that was a thought that came to mind when posting this thread here. Hmm don't see why there couldn't be an Orz inspired 'visitation'.
3  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Check out this shard. on: May 27, 2007, 04:38:00 am
Yeah UO was bad for that, we're adding certain tactical options for players and trying to bring more depth to the game though,  so there are more ways to stop and escape a particularly developed player than just brute force.
One thing that would always happen to new players hunting in the britain graveyard is that a tanked up warrior or mage would recall in mounted, with no time to reacted everyone would be dead in seconds. Now there will be a slight keening sound on the site the player will appear to give a vital 2 or 3 seconds. Its also a cool effect.

The part that will lead to some wierd and wonderful situations though will be runegates I think, rungate co-ordinates are a very sought after thing and they provide the possibility of being the first to venture onto new worlds other than britain and delucia. They will also lead to some rather nasty places and the wrong kind of things can use them to come into britannia, date specific and also random encounters are planned through runegates. December 25th for example could see a twisted Santa Clause from a parrallel reality terrorise britainnia, collecting heads for his sack to give to the children back home.

Another situation is the possibility of an entire guild of undead players, the location to becoming undead is a secret so you probably won't see too many undead players running around to start with. The wierd emergent tactics possible here though will be the fact that a single undead player can die and rise and repeat, but by himself is easily finished off. 5 undead players though, would be a rather scarey site considering the naturally gorey nature of their abilitys and the fact that if you kill one there would always 3 more after your blood and 1 or 2 in the proccess of violently coming back to life.
4  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Check out this shard. on: May 26, 2007, 09:08:09 am

Not sure if this is anyones cup of tea, but this a free custom made UO shard that's been worked on for a while and just went online (yes I'm involved Smiley)

Still getting the website fully done up btw.

Anyone whos ever played on a POL emulated shard or even any UO shard will probably appreciate the elegance and direction of the shard at the moment, we have a lot that many other free shards don't. There are plans to take it even further too, a more dynamic world is a goal as well as innovative ways to breathe new life into the first MMO ever. Spawning is about half done though, but coming along.

So please give it a try and see for yourself, tell me what you think. In the initial stages as the player base is small things will seem kind of static, but that changes dramatacilly when the ball gets rolling. At worst it'll become the most brutal and violent chatroom you've ever been in,, but I think we have some good ideas and notions on how to make UO fun again (Runegates for example, you gotta see em). Its also possible to become undead and eat your enemies, as well as lurch forth from your supposed death and further kick ass (there is a way to kill undead players, but Im not telling. Ok its fairly obvious).

The is also scripted mostly from scratch (scripted well for that matter), so a lot of the lack of polish and broken-ness of most other free shards is not there.

You can legally download UO and its expansions, think there are directions in the forums.

Also of note, the legality of POL based shards has not been challenged by EA in the 7-8 years since its founding, perhaps because of the use of custom clients (no ones property) or maybe the relative harmlessness of it all. It is generally accepted though that any new attempts at creating shard emulating software violates a more recent passage in the user agreement. So rest easy.

Haha cool, that guys smart. Good thinker.
Holy crap, thats exactly how I put it once "how religion might spread like a "mind" virus across societies"
6  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Star Control 3 with fluid dynamics? HELL YES on: May 06, 2007, 03:29:53 pm

One of the craziest and most beautiful little games I've ever seen, using fluid dynamics in a 2d environment, perfect for a Star Control type game.

Check out when you charge up the paddles and make the explosions, the swirling plasma vortex sweeping aside everything, kind of reminds me of the Kor-Ah flamey thing.

Imagine a Shofixiti glory device using similar physics, it'd be glorious, flames and plasma shockwaves immolating and crashing into an enemy ship, washing it away on scorching currents.

Every moment I played this game it reminded me that 2d games can still be beautiful. With stuff like this possible in real-time: Star Control 3 could be one of the best looking games out (when its out) despite being limited to 2d.
7  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Infinity - Quest For Earth on: July 13, 2006, 06:57:37 am
Oh, I saw a video from this... the seamless space to planetary flight was impressive. I think it was posted on the Vega Strike forums as an example for what we'd like to eventually have.

It looks like a very interesting project. Are you involved with it?

At the moment not much more than contributing to community discussions and spreading the word to fine communities such as this. Maybe one day I'll actually get around to helping out with the modelling or texturing.
8  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Infinity - Quest For Earth on: July 02, 2006, 12:35:55 pm

Dunno if this has been mentioned, search turns up nothing.

Its an Elite inspired space MMO in development, using procedral algorithms to generate the universe.

It will have 100 billion star systems, real time celestial mechanics and it is all to actual scale.
If you were to walk around an Earth like planet, it would take months in real life, maybe longer.
A person couldn't visit every planet in their entire lifetime if they spent less than a second at each one.

The engine streams data so there are no loading screens in game, flying from a valley on a barren planet to a string of moons you can see overhead is seamless and in real time. If you can see it, you can fly to it. Players can even explore the upper layers of gas giants.

Exploration, combat, trade are all possible, with the initial quest being to find Earth. Players can own planets and conceivably whole star systems. The game physics are newtonian and flight is twitch based, so you can be behind the wheel throughout the entire time as you accelerate to faster than light speeds.

9  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Freakin' Bizarre Idea on: May 20, 2006, 01:30:54 pm
I think it'd be hilarious to replace all the Kor-Ah conversation with the Syreen conversation, and switch the Ur-Quan theme with the Pkunk music.

Whats going on with this thing? Ur-Quan masters could really do with that facelift.
11  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: The upcoming energy crisis. on: April 28, 2006, 02:51:26 pm

One tiny little problem with your wonderful solution.

Widespread nuclear energy also means a whole lot of nuclear waste. Nuclear waste last I checked (and depending on the type of waste produced) takes a few thousand years to decay down to safe levels. Finding a safe disposal site that wont contaminate the surrounding area is difficult in and of itself.

Carbon, though it might trigger more dangerous effects, can be removed from the atmosphere much more quickly then it takes for radioactive waste to decay.

Point in form: Nuclear isnt really an option either. We need to step up to fusion as soon as humanly possible and skip nuclear altogether.

Nuclear waste can be harmlessly stored in many places. Under the circumstances, we really have no alternative. None.

Nuclear fusion won't mature for quiet some time. Either we can store nuclear waste, or watch our children starve and die of disease as the worlds farmland becomes unuseable.

Nuclear fusion though, contrary to what was earlier said, will most likely become viable eventually. It will be worth it one day.
12  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: The upcoming energy crisis. on: April 27, 2006, 03:48:45 am
I'm with nuclear energy 100%, no carbon emissions and it can be put in place today which is critical as we should have reduced greenhouse gas emmisions about 30 years ago. There is I believe, enough nuclear fuel in the ground and in the bloody weapons we have, to supply more than enough energy until we actually get fusion working as a feasible option.

Current estimates put that at 2030 at the earliest, so until then, nuclear power is the only way to go. (The costs of setting up renewable energy facilities to meet the world energy demand are astronomical)

Additionally, nuclear power efficiency and safety is incredibly advanced compared to the days of Chernobyl. The Chernobyl incident was caused by politics as much as it was by flimsy construction.
13  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Remix Pack 4 - The New Alliance of Free Stars on: April 16, 2006, 05:07:19 am
I don't think an Androsynth theme would be dark or sinister, probably more inspirational with a techno theme. As the synth were just independant and too free spirited to be treated like crap by humans for their entire existence. They got a better deal working for the Ur Quan.
14  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Ur-Quan vs. Mouse on: April 12, 2006, 06:02:47 am
That second one is just plain wrong, I mean the first was already a stretch.. The poor little bugger was doing pretty good, fighting on bravely. I'd like to put that asshole in a tank of giant centipedes.. The crime fits the punishment.
