The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Old memories of Star Control 2

My dad brought that game home and told me, this was a fun game to play together with my sister. in fact, he showed me the Super Melee Mode. He also told me, the ships are steering strangely due to some magnetic energy field or something... I played it a while with my sister, but she quickly got bored with it, because it had spaceships in it and she did never like my sci-fi obsession I played against the computer, but it wasn't much fun, soon I discovered the other EXE file, but could not get any further than the copy protection. I asked my dad for the map and then I started the game the first time... I was fascinated i could explore the solar system, i found the slave shielded earth and at first figured, the red glow around earth must be because of high air pollution. I talked to the starbase commander, but since I was like 8 or 9 years old, I only knew some words in English, so I did not really understand anything... Then I also remember how I was stuck talking with Fwiffo on Pluto, for some reason unable to complete the dialog without fighting... at 11 pm my mother bursted into my room and just pushed the power button of the computer... I should have been in bed for at least an hour I did not enhance very far in the game, I remember I lost a lot of landers and for a long time I didn't notice that there is an auto-pilot feature so I often got messed up in hyperspace or accidently flew into Ilwrath space... this annoyed me so much, I started to mess with the game files and I overwrote the ILWRATHI.SHP with the SHOFIXTI.SHP, figuring this would replace the ships in-game so I have a much easier to beat enemy. But somehow this just erased the Ilwrath Spheare of Influence from the game, so I could now harvest a lot, but since I could not understand most part of the dialog, I eventuelly got bored and since I had very little hard disk space deleted the game...

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: UQM Mod Race Replacement

or how about a race of gamblers to play for RU's with?
Quite a good idea, although I already considered something like that... Problem with RUs is, it's not a common currency but just a number to describe the capacities of the starbase. But I definitely LIKE the gambling idea, perhaps I could add this to either Druuge or Melnorme... !? EDIT: Ooops...

Also, if you can get organized Red has a point.
Huh? What does that mean? Also if you leave notes behind, for example on the ultronomicon, on how you did it, it would save any who want do something similar from having to reinvent the wheel.
This is what I planned to do.

So, has nobody voted on the poll or why can't I see any results? I don't think any of the races can be "missed". They all play a part in the game, and since I really like everything about this game, I can't give any of them up. Makes me praise The Makers even more!
So maybe you should not play a mod, if you just like everything of the game and can't stand something to change... Relax, it's just a mod... story would be different, so Pkunk never split up from the Yehat and... what? Pkunk are not on the list? Of course they're not, it was just an example and deliberately wrong.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / UQM Mod Race Replacement
|

I thought I would run this poll to do some "research" for my mod ideas... It's about the Mod I'm propably going to make. The idea is, if I were to replace a race form the game SC2 with another race, which is currently not in the game, which race would be the best choice. But aside from practical reasons like technical things or importance to story, it is also important, which race will be the least "missed" one. Be aware, I am not saying that I'm going to do this... Perhaps I will add a race without removing another one. Or I will remove a race and add no new one... Or I'll add even two races. Who knows? Even I don't know, but this poll is so I could get an idea... You'll notice that not all races are listed in the poll. It's because I need them. Commentary is appreciated, feel free to post anything relating. Perhaps ideas what kind of race could replace the one that is removed... This could be races that already exist in the Star Control Universe or made-up ones.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / UQM Mod Ideas
|

I'm currently in the first phase of creating a mod for the Ur-Quan Masters game. This means a full-scale mod, which includes new dialogs, new quests, changes to races and story, new starmap and propably changes to melee ships. Somewhat similar to what Nicholai does.
While Nicholai seems to be at a final phase of his project, as far as we know from his last post, is my project still in the planning, there isn't anything done to the code yet, I have experimented a while and I made notes about the mod, but I still don't really know, what people would like in a mod and things they won't like.
So, now I want to know from you, what you would like and what you would not like in a mod like that. You can post about all parts of the game, including story and dialog.
But I do not expect long texts with detailled plans or something. I would like this thread to go fast, so keep yourself short and post only one or maybe two things you would like/dislike. You can of course post as many ideas as you like, but first wait for another post in between...
Also please keep yourself back with offtopic posts, thank you.
So, post your ideas!

deliver organs that human bodies do not *eeerrg* reject? is it as simple as that? I'm afraid I'm German too, so I am not sure... That's pretty ridiculous. Genes work in such crazy seemingly-random ways, that you are almost certain to kill anything you try to engineer However, scientist did manage to make a potatoe (or was it onion?), which produces spider web... They hope this could be used for bullet-proof vests, or in bridge building, and other things, as soon as they can produce it in a large scale.

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Slylandro in player vs. player

Just out of curiosity, has a situation ever come up where one player (playing against Slylandro) tried to destroy asteroids to prevent the opponent from energizing? I did that in Single Player Mode... when I still only could try my luck with Cruisers against Slylandro... Actually I did handle this quite well after a while, but still occasionally lost a Cruiser. Well, you can't cut them from energy, but you can try to prevent them re-energizing quickly, especially when it's close to you

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Whale's Voyage II anyone?
|
on: January 14, 2008, 12:43:10 am
|
A few days ago I told a friend, who also plays PC games, about Star Control II and he was like "hey, sounds very much like a game I used to play..." but he did not know the name of it, but he was sure "Star Control" or "Ur Quan Masters" was not the name. Today we met in ICQ again and he managed to find out the name of the game: Whale's Voyage II. A quick search on google turns out this game seems to be freeware today, so I will propably give it a shot. Does anyone here know that game? Is it really similar to Star Control II? Did you like it? Or anything else you wish to add Edit: The name suggests there most likely would be a prequel to that game, so if someone only nows the first part, post anyway...
