1  The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / The Androsynth: A Joke on: September 09, 2006, 01:31:24 pm
Well, I've been spending a bit of time with our genenged buddies recently, and I noticed something interesting: the Androsynth ship in the game is a partial tribute to the band DEVO. I looked and this isn't noted on the 'references' page in the Ultronomicon or posted here, so here's my reasons.

Point One: the Androsynth victory ditty is a riff - if that's the right word - from the song Mongoloid.

Point Two: One of the captain names is 'BOOJI-1 (this IS noted in the Ultronom page but it sounds a bit uncertain, I'm providing verification)

Point Three: there are four Androsynths (Androsynthi?) in the captain's picture. Of course DEVO generally had more than four people in it, but the fact remains: they're all wearing jumpsuits and goggles.

So the Androsynth, the next step in human evolution, are perhaps not quite so advanced as me might be lead to think. Might the 'made-men' be... devolving?

Or perhaps they just listen to too much music from the 70's.

Oh, right.

I saw something a few pages back aboot a ship editor, and somebody who was working on one for .5. Is it out yet anywhere?

EDIT: nevermind there, it's called the 'search' button. Jeez, I sound like a forum n00b or something. Not good for the... hmmr, 3rd post. Nobody actaully noticed that, did they?

<_<

>_>

Okay, good.

By the way, did you get a chance to send an e-mail to Alex Ness about creating a new Star Control yet?

Oh, but of course! Days, days ago. It was one of the first things I did, actually.

*goes back to training on Androsynth, which is kinda useless*

EDIT: Wait... what story?

Hail, Centurion! And all that sort of thing.

As a child of five or six I had StarCon II for the 3DO. Although my mind was at that point too tiny to wrap itself around Story Mode, I loved (and sucked at) Super Melee and vividly remembered the look and weapons of several ships - the Chenjesu Broodhome and Ilwrath Avenger, along with of course the Ur-Quan Dreadnaught - for many years, long after the console had vanished and I had forgotten the name of the game. The only thing I could remember for the longest time was the two-hands-crushing-a-globe thing on the manual, which I see you have cunningly employed up there at the top of the screen.

So imagine my ecstasy when, while trolling Wikipedia for old games that I had once played, I came across beloved Star Control. I was quite happy to read about its genesis and the previous and later games. And then, at the bottom of the page, was: "The Ur-Quan Masters: an open-source port of Star Control II"

Bouncing up and down with glee like an Ilwrath in an Earthling nursery, I downloaded it and began to play. Everything, everything, was just how I remembered it (which admittedly wasn't very well.) I blasted through Story Mode in a couple days with the guilty help of the Ultronomicon. I loved every minute of it.

In any case, I'll be around until my interest wanes. My favorite race(?) is/are the Orz, followed closely by the Ur-Quan. However I have little to no skill with the Nemesis, so shipwise I rather like the Androsynth Guardian; as I have terrible reflexes and no aim, spittlebugging suits me well. Anyways I'll soon be trying to beat the game without going to the station.

See y'all around.
