The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / General UQM Discussion / Re: Qualms about voice acting

Yeah, the Dynarri sounds more like "psychic hillbilly" then "evil sentinent frog". One of my least favorite, IMO, especially since you have to listen to him so much.
I liked the Mycon voice too, it just fits them so well. It sounds so unnatural and distorted, almost like they're on drugs or something.

Okay, first of all, Val, it's a video game, made in the early 90s, with a limited budget and staff. Of COURSE the voice acting isn't going to be perfect! Also, I think it adds to the whole campy retro sci-fi feel of the game (IMO). It's nice to see a game that doesn't take itself too seriously once and a while. Besides, no offence, but what are you going to do about it? Unless you just happen to have a team of professional voice actors....

The Ur-Quan Masters Re-Release / Starbase Café / Re: Are Plants Intelligent?

Semantics?
Intelligence is not a boolean, unless we apply some sort of arbitrary threshold. It also has several dimensions which needs to be taken into account.
I find it unlikely that plants would be spending their evo points on intelligence. Sure, they might get some sensory data like light, nutrition and so forth, and they can move a little... But I would guess they mostly encounter the same situations over an over again, so there's no need for them to think on their feet.
Random: There's an insect (I don't know the english name) that can actually sting a tree leaf and inject some DNA that mutates the leaf so it grows a little house for the insect. Or so I've heard. You've probably seen a little round bulge on a leaf at some occasion, that would be it.
SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE! *crowd cheers* Thread over, Arne wins.

That's why about everybody considers Super Melee to be an abstract-y representation of a fleet battle.
Wha? It's a video game, and all I think it "represents" is two ships dogfighting around an unrealisticly small planet. If you're going to try to make sense of Star Control, how do you explain the planet lander sequences, the fact your ship explodes when all the crew are killed, etc? Seriously, like all video games, it's better if you don't think about it too hard.

1) Equip the 'Synth with those long range Blazers mentioned in the story.
...Story? Am I missing something here? Is there an SC novel or something? Massed cloaked Ilwrath can easily be detected since they obscure a large patch of stars. Well, that's assuming we're talking about a 2D melee battle....in a real, 3D battle, the stars are gonna be faaar away from the battlefield, hopefully.

Kohr-Ah: Over five thousand races have made such a claim. We survived. They did not. Nor shall you.
I don't know why, but this quote has always stuck in my mind since the first time I played SC. It pretty much sums up the Kohr-Ah's whole attitude, which is why I like it.
